The constant use of profanity to me is a sign of a lack of intelligence and education.

dannymcgr81b14_ESO is right, ZOS set that up because they have standards. :)
I have a genius iq and a couple degrees. I also use the f word at least once every sentence.

I find nobody in my fields care.

Sheesh, I hate these knee jerk brainless pronouncements.

You don't want hard core x-rated content to be broadcast on network tv? You want censorship. You don't want people yelling fire in a movie theatre? Censorship. I can't put a billboard showing a person getting their head blown off on a public roadway? Censorship. Society is full of censorship.

And anyway, ZOS is a private company, not a government. They can do what they want in their own chat system, and impose whatever terms of service they like, and throw you out if you don't abide by it. Just as a convenience store can have me removed from it if I stand in the middle and start screaming the F-bomb.

And there's plenty of kids who's parents have no clue or don't care. Those kids are garbage we as a society should just ignore and not take even the most basic steps to protect? Nice. There's also parent's who did view the game, and made the decsion to allow their kids to play based on the content (I would certainly let my 13 year old play) but weren't exposed to the zone chat excesses.
So... the kids are just SOL? Because you can't be bothered to control your language or not engage in detailed, graphic conversations in the public chat?

Not to mention the fact that I, paying for a game, shouldn't have to wade through that garbage just to ask a question. Their's private (guild and tells) methods of communication available to you. There's no reason you can't keep it clean in the public one.

You sound like the little old lady that kvetched at me on the corner because I dropped somethng, said "well, sh-" and their 10 year old grandkid was right there.

Not my fault you or your family cant teach the kid that in your opinion its not okay to say it or other words.

When I keep it out of /zone its because of ZOS' rules, not your kid or anyone elses kid.

Raising them and teaching them now not to be immature, pretentious, entitled brats is the parents' job, no one elses.

This "community raising" is why the state and schools think they know better how to raise your kid than you do, how better to educate them than you do, and hospitals have child services take your kid when you dont agree on how a condition should be treated.

I could go on about my opinion of todays crappy parenting and societys lack of personal accountability, but thats a different thread. Im not censoring myself in public because people like you demand it.

If you choose to use profanity you are choosing to allow others to judge you based upon your use of profanity. How individuals judge you for your use of profanity is beyond anyone's control.

I feel there is a time and place for when and where profanity is acceptable, and like personal ethics, very few people will ever agree on when and where it is acceptable. If you don't care how others perceive you, then it's not really an issue. If you do care how others perceive you though, then minding your tongue isn't a bad idea from time to time.

I REALLY don't think bad language heard/read in a game will ruin our younglings.

We're doing a good enough job at that through far more insidious means.

Maybe you should read up a bit on fallacious arguments. Here's an example.
    http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Not_as_bad_as

When I was in school I heard far more profanity and sex ed talk from the high schoolers than I did around my parents. And my parents have potty mouths.

Why? Because its considered "bad". Its why kids do most of the crap we were told not to... because we arent supposed to do it.

My dad found out Id smoked weed 20 years ago. First thing he said was "if youd wanted to go and do that, at least do it up here(was ip at oyr hunting camp) where you wont get thrown in jail" followed by rolling a joint.

If its consideted "bad" or "wrong" to do, theyre going to do it.

My parents, I grew up with alcohol and smokes. I want to try something, "sure, fine." Loses its magic when its no longer "bad".

If you really want to swear, do it verbally without microphone on.

Yes, but theyre not going to do it because someone got bent over being told to f off or something.

I even have a case file on a guy that a cop tried to drag in for flipping him off (PA state cop), judge threw it out, told the cop to get over it.

You can be cited for disturbing the peace for standing on a corner shouting "anything" too long. Its how I clear out transient camps near the plaza. Theyll get loud and obnoxious and the cops will shoo them off.

It's ZOS's and they make the rules on what others can or can't do in its regard. Just because you say I can't do M rated stuff with your wife, doesn't mean you can't...and if I so choose to ignore the rules there are consequences for my actions.

In summary, just don't get all M rated with the chat box. I know it's tempting, and seems inviting, but ZOS won't be happy if they find out.

Again--it's not the occasional word that bothers me at all.

Last night, in chat, in just the 3 minutes I read it, I was treated to people being called "C***"s, told how much they'd like to do various things (you can imagine) to the niece someone ill-advisedly mentioned, some troll popping in throughout to talk about the various animals he liked to have sex with (not his exact way of describing it, of course) and general abusive, nasty stuff. Mixed in with people asking game questions, looking for groups, trades, etc.

I'm not some old lady. I drop the f word all the time around people I know, both at work and home. But we're not talking some "fine line" here, or someone saying "boobies" or "crud".

It's a common chat area run by a private company, with its mix of people using it for legitimate game reasons. There's no place for it. I'd have had to ignore 20 people at least, just last night. Why should I or anyone have to constantly do that in order to use the only global communication in the game?

It's a sure indication that they aren't bright enough to be worth chatting to and certainly aren't mature enough to group up with. The resulting click to /ignore ensures I never have to see them display their lack of both an education and a worthwhile vocabulary ever again. Sheer bliss.

You know who i think is unintelligent? People that use this tired old fallacy.

Shakespeare is littered with profanities, so are Chaucers works. So is Beowulf. So are many literary classics. Many of those authors are considered the best and brightest in their field.

Still recall watching a captain giving a brief to a two-star general during a division operations order. The general stopped the captain, saying, "Captain, it's obvious you don't know what you're talking about. So go sit down, and have your subordinate brief in your place."

No profanity was uttered, but that captain's face revealed a considerable amount of pain and turmoil.

I am not sure what the exact TOS and EULA are, but I am absolutely certain there are draconian clauses that permit ZOS to ban you for "any reason" essentially. Remember, you have no "rights" here.

Also, you may always whisper things inside of your own head but that doesn't mean you should say it in the public. And, if you think there should be no rules whatsoever you are probably an uncivil jerk who just wants this to degenerate into Elder Scrolls 4chan Edition.

    Edit:

As per the Name Shaming policy I won't give names, but some of you posters who are saying you should be allowed to cuss, have complained in zone chat whenever a political or religious debate comes up.

So you want to censor others too! You want to make sure people can say "Bloody Tampon Eater" but not "Damn Republicans." So you are also censors.

For the most part in-game so far, the people I see using profanity are obviously 12-year old desperate to get attention. They use profanity simply because they know they can, and it gives them a sense of worth that they can not find any other way than to speak like that in an MMO. Most of the profanity I've seen is used simply for the sake of it, or in sad, epic-failed attempts to get a few laughs so as to boost their own self-esteem.

There's a filter. I also really enjoy ignoring these idiots. Ignoring them doesn't hurt them, doesn't hurt me, so we can both press on and play the game how we want.

If Zone chat gets REALLY annoying, you can always turn it off, too. Join some guilds and watch guild-chat - then again, some of those are full of these very same 12 year olds trying to impress people with their use of profanity and dude-speak.

Again - the liberal use of the ignore function is quick, easy - and will make your gaming experience so much more enjoyable. It really does work! :)

Best to use some sense of judgement, I don't object to swearing in general, especially as Liverpudlians use swearing as a form of emphasis. But on the other hand I don't want to see people swearing for the sake of swearing either.

Best Idea is to go for middle ground.
