Profanity

To start it off, my apologies to all the people whom I have possibly offended in the zone chat by dropping a f-bomb. Even got in a fun little profanity filled skype chat. I know this chain of events isn't worthy of a topic, but the real matter on hands is.

How does this profanity in this game work? Since it's an M (for mature) labeled game, are we allowed to say 'damn' every once in a while? I'm curious.

I detest people that try to say "Watch your language please."

NO. I'll say whatever the hell I want. There's a filter. And you can ignore me.

That has been exactly my mindset for the last couple of days. Even got into a skype WAR because someone told me different. Man, you have know idea how good it feels to know I'm not the only one out here.

The M rating applies to what the developers put in the game. It doesn't apply to players. According to the Terms of Use you can be banned or suspended for profanity. It's at the discretion of ZOS.

Nothing wrong with swearing! Always been a healthy aspect of the English language and i must assume many others.

I can't *** stand people telling me how I should talk. 'Though, I also firmly believe in being a respectful when it's appropriate.

The constant use of profanity to me is a sign of a lack of intelligence and education.

I try to keep zone / say chat Teen rated. For party / group / tell, what ever you and your friends agree upon.

The problem that I have when I try to ask a question about something and some person (aka a jerk) tried to say stupid or bad words and my question get lost or made fun of. Is it asking to much to show respect in the zone chat? If one feel that one have to use bad words or tell everyone how to have sex, those type of topics should be kept in party / group or tells.

I have no problem reporting people like that. I like M rated games, but I do not want it show into my face either.

Wait, this actually happens to people? Wow. Yeah I could understand people getting banned for explaining how to have sexual intercourse.

If you want to swear, keep it in guild chat or other private chat. It has no place in public chat channels. You can and will get actioned for it. I doubt they would do something as severe as ban you for one offense, but I can guarantee you would at least get a warning and possibly a short suspension.

Swearing like a drunken sailor in public chat is not a sign of maturity. It's a sign of immaturity. Maturity is knowing where and when the proper place for it is. In guild chat with you and a few friends? Fine. In public chat channels? Not fine. I drop f-bombs all the time in private or guild chat with my friends. I do not in public channels.

With only one channel (zone) used for advice, trade, general discussion etc. people should definitely watch their language. A profanity filter doesn't help much if the context of the discussion is graphic or abusive. And I've seen a lot of those--Auridon Zone, last night, for example.

No matter if there is an "M" rating, there are kids playing, not to mention people who just don't want to feel like they're wading in a cess pool any time they want to ask a question. Seriously, you have to have some kind of major social disorder or other personality issue if "saying what you want" in a public channel has to mean you can't exercise the most basic of societal controls.

Rating only applies to developer content.

If they want an npc dropping the f bomb its good.

    Doesnt mean you get to.

That said, my personal rule is no f bombs in general chat. Guild is ffa(Im guild leader, dont like my language, gtfo) and groups depends on if someone else goes first.

Ive strung full sentences with mostly the f bomb. Its one of my favorite words. As paralyse and Nord. ><

The profanity filter on these forums is a bit excessive. I wrote a post where I made a typo while trying to type "tested", only the last letter was wrong and it got turned in to *** in the post. It wasn't even close to swearing, it was a perfectly acceptable word to hear from a doctor.

Cursing is a part of the english language, and if hearing a curse word makes your ears bleed, cover your ears.

It really isn't that hard. I don't particularly drop f-bombs in zone chat, but I've cursed before, and I'm 100% sure I'll do it again.

Swear words I don't really care, I don't do it much myself as I really don't feel they enhance a conversation.

Racism, bigotry, misogyny, sexism or anything along those lines and I do have an issue with it. You have have your own views, but keep them to yourself and don't harass others with them.

I'd suggest using the profanity filter for those who find swearing bothersome.

Doesn't matter the rating, people will swear in any game and out of game - if people don't utilize the tools given to them, then there really is no basis to complain.

But yeah, is there is difference between the constant f-bombs for no reason other than to look "cool" or to try to be funny, and just swearing when a appropriate moment occurs; but don't expect an MMO to be filled with mature players. I don't type '[snip]' in chat, but I mean, 'damn,' etc. is nothing wrong. I just report people that are being obvious for just spam '[snip]' in zone chat for no reason.

The public street is labeled "M" because mature themes might happen there. Are you allowed to swear like a sailor there?

If you really want to swear, do it verbally without microphone on.
If you use /zone, guild or group channel you want others to hear you. You choose to risk offending others with it when you invest time to write it down. In the grown up world you suffer the consequences for your choices.

I enjoy a bit of salty language and mature innuendo, particularly when done with wit and humor. I do not care for the endless ALL CAP f-bombs that I sometimes see. That being said I don't report that type of thing unless it is something hostile that is addressed in a demeaning way towards me or others. I have put a couple of people on ignore. I had just rather move on and let the in game moods focus their attention on more important issues.

There's the profanity filter, and there's /ignore. Between those two, if anyone is offended, they can block whatever or whomever is offending to them.

This is a free country, people are free to talk however they want. Don't try to nanny the rest of us, and stop expecting people to censor themselves for the sake of other people's kids. Here's the hard truth: no one cares about your kids except you. Sorry, but that's the truth.

I've seen some zone chat I didn't care for - not because of cussing, but just the overall subject matter. Right click > ignore, works wonders, takes 2 seconds, can continue playing game with pleasure.

This thread doesn't even need to exist.

Exactly. The game and forums are private property. Zenimax has complete total authority over what happens here. "Free speech" does not apply. If someone comes into your house and starts talking like a drunken sailor, you have every right to kick them out. The same applies here.
