Mail: Expires in 30 days... or does it?

I just had the problem where my mail box was full, because very old (ancient) mail from 1 months and 2 months ago was still in the inbox. Which makes me wonder what the "Expires in 30 days" then means on the mail. I thought it would auto-delete it after that time. It hardly is that they will be gone after 30 days when you don't read them, as you can only see the expiration time upon opening the mail. Besides, on 3 day expiration it does work that mails from that time delete automatically.
