Audio adjustments made in-game will not hold

I have repeatedly adjusted some of the Audio sliders in-game but they continue to revert back to 'default' settings. I even made the changes in the UserSettings file (with the game closed). Not sure what to try next 
Sorry if this is somewhere in here already - I did a search for 'Audio' and looked through 13 pages of posts to no avail.
