Textures not loading at correct resolution since patch (Mac)

I've always had issues with my horse texture being low res sometimes and fine other times, but since this newest patch, the textures are consistently loading in at the wrong resolution - not just the horses, but some other textures around me as well. The horse itself looks like a badly made clay model!

I have screenshots to show what I mean:

I'm playing on a high-end iMac - I don't know if that makes any difference. I haven't tried it on PC yet since the patch... looooong download! All my settings are on high.

I think it's loading in the wrong texture mipmaps from the texture sheet, using the low-res distant map instead of the up-close full res.

I’m on a high end iMac too and noticing the selective low/missing textures about the time when the game would crash. So, I wrap it up and “crash” myself (i.e., restart). Textures load fine for another hour or two. Then I “crash” again, like before, just look at it as a “soft” memory crash.

I haven't noticed the crashing being related to that - most crashes for me happen when I activate something. However, this is the worst I've ever seen the horses look, and only since patching it up. Only very occasionally have I seen the horse rendered with the correct resolution texture on, usually they look like crap, especially next to my detailed character sitting on it.

It's like the game is failing to load the close-up full textures properly, using the distant view mipmaps instead. I've been making textures for Elder Scrolls horses since Morrowind (back then added by a mod) and these are horribly low-res.

Since the patch however, this problem is significantly worse.

I've been having the same problem all day. It's not just the horse either.. multiple textures are being drawn at very low resolution while everything shows up normal. The game has also been crashing like mad for me with this patch but I don't think this low res texture thing is related.

Same effect here - horses (and other various things like boxes, cabinets, and backpacks) are all very low rez now. I'm on an iMac as well, but I did not have this issue before the patch. Horses never looked awesome, but this ghostly white blob that is now my horse is definitely new since the 1.1.2 patch.

I tried logout, restart comp, and repair game client, and things improved for a bit, but as soon as I zoned, my horse became a white blob again.

After an afternoon's playing, my textures went from normal to 'clayworld', progressively worse and worse. My friend was playing with me, sitting right beside me and he saw the images on my screen getting lower and lower res, though his were less affected on his laptop.

    Clay horse syndrome!

This is unacceptable for a game I'm paying to play, on a high-end machine that can handle all the bells and whistles.

After doing some investigating by playing on the PC side (Bootcamp), I can say that this texture degradation is only appearing on the Mac. The rain shader on the Mac is also broken, and some of the atmospheric effects lack colour. I also get regular crashes, usually when activating something.

On Windows, I get no texture degradation at all, the rain shader works perfectly and the atmosphere seems more colourful. It also crashes less. I guess I'll be using my PC side for this game for a while.

I think something is broken with OpenGL rendering with 1.1.2. OP - you should change subject to make clear it's Mac client.

Have you guys checked out the Mac Technical Support sub-forum?

I've just run the repair tool of the TESO Launcher, everything looks nice again. Let's see for how long.

This is interesting. Maybe @Moonraker‌ can give us his thoughts.

And your horse textures are the first mod I install.

As already posted on the Mac Support section, it is most likely down to a change in the Mac client which is part of the efforts to address the memory crash issue since update 1.1.2. It did help with this including Cyrodiil but at the cost of aggressive texture downsampling.

The texture degradation has been noted in various posts and as the developers read these, it is likely that the changes will be reverted or at least made less aggressive in the next update next week.

The rain issue is due to a SPLASH texture missing currently. It is in the Mac client as it uses OpenGL by default. If you use OpenGL option for the PC client is is also there and has been since beta.

Some change in 1.1.2 actually improved it somewhat as the shadows appear to work correctly now which reduces the dark ground from certain angles of view but the square around the character is still apparent on water reflection and in blotchy leaf shadows under trees in rain.

Apart from the rain glitch, there is little difference visually between the two clients from previous testing. The only advantage currently for using Bootcamp is that the PC client, though it does have memory issues, they don;t generally cause it to crash in the same way as the Mac client which has to load more into memory on launch than the PC client. With the 32-bit memory limit of 4GB this causes issues from any existing memory leaks or related problems.

The developers continue to work on the issue and have already added some fixes which have helped extend time between crashes.

For Mac related issues its best to check the specific Mac Technical Support section (and in French/ German as appropriate)
