Hacked!

avertyn
avertyn
My wife's account was hacked early this morning, and then it was perma-banned for gold farming.

ESO's security is a joke. There was no email sent about logging in from an unauthorized IP address, and there was no contact attempted by ESO...they just banned the account.

So after waiting almost 2 hours on the phone I finally get through to someone, and they are going to take a MINIMUM of a full day to get it fixed.

ESO needs authenticators NOW. Well, ok, they needed them at release! But each day delay only feeds the gold farmers, who are not using their own accounts they are hacking user accounts to do their farming. And then, once they've hacked the user accounts, they send gold selling advertising to those email accounts as well.

Who's to blame for gold farming? Zenimax, for being so short sighted as to not providing any significant security for their accounts.

Want to stop gold farming? Put more pressure on Zenimax to implement authenticators.

Sucks man. Hope this gets sorted out soon.

Another reason why having our user names show up in-game (chat etc.) was a bad idea.

I suggest everyone changes their PW on a weekly basis to try and minimise this security risk.

did support tell you your account was hacked or perma banned? there is a bug with this new patch that has many of us unable to log in,,some are unable to log in with a login timed out, error 301,and some auto baned from there auto bot detection from killing a boss to many times...might ant to read a few of the other post and see if you have similar circumstances..i myself have not been able to log in for going on three days now and likely wont get confirmation of the issue being known til after the holiday.

I cant see why the process takes a whole day to settle. You talk to them on the phone they ought to fix it right there. They are being overly aggressive with their bans

I would rather seen gold farming than worry about being unfairly banned,

Authenticators are easily compromised (I guess I shouldn't say easily without providing context) and were compromised in WoW on a massive scale with a man in the middle attack.

I would say it's impressive how little these issues have cropped up with ESO.
  • edu.journeymanub17_ESO
Your wife's account was probably NOT hacked but, instead, target of new anti-bot mechanics that were implemented with the new patch.

Now, about that being fair or not, only a investigation will have the answer and that, of course, takes time.

Don't take me wrong, I hope you have this issue addressed ASAP, but the cheating that was allowed in the code, be it used by gold farmers or kids with no interest other than having the best, in the fastest way possible and with minimum effort... well, it really pisses me off.

Of course, if said mechanics target and banned a legitimate player they need to apologize and fix said mechanics.

Quite a few innocent accounts get caught up in the regular ban sweeps. It has happened once before, I was caught in that batch. This is the next big sweep and if you read a few pages here you will note a few making the same claims.

Doing what the moderator above suggested is the best way to get your account unbanned. I am sure when you do get it back you will find everything is in order and nothing is missing.

Support DID tell us the account was hacked. We know we logged out around 9:00 PM, and the account was in use at 3:30 AM when it was perma-banned (again according to support).

We had to call support because when she attempted to log in even on the web site she got a message saying that her account was suspended.

Why whining on forum, if there is a procedure to reclaim your account from ban?

I believe its a common pratice to "ban" the account once they saw it could get compromissed - they see the account loged in somewhere not related to the owner's country and the system "auto-ban" you to protect against thiefs.

One friend had the same issue while playing Lotro, hes account was logged in a different country, so the account was banned. Then he called support, confirmed his account details and got the ban lifted.

Hope that you get a quick solution on this.

In my experience, very, very few accounts are ever hacked. They're taken over because the account holder either shared the password, or because the account holder uses a weak (read: useless) password that any idiot could figure out.

This is quite often the case. And as a thanks the company gets a hate post in the forums from the customer who didn't take care of his account security in the first place.

Not talking about this case, just a general rambling

A guy in my guild went through this, it took 17!!! days before he eventually got unbanned and got his account back. Not even a sorry or a single added day of gametime was added to his account, do I need to mention that he quit playing?

People really should stop install useless programs that claim to be game enhancing, maybe even those ESO Auto Bot s**t programs too, play the freaking game as it is!

If the email account didn't get hacked how come there was no mail for the confirmation of an unknown IP address and a security code to validate that IP ?

this sounds like the "it's not my bank's fault it's your company's" all this says to me is that the hacker is *** good at what he does, that he got past ZOS, so its a two pronged problem, one hand ZOS let someone through, on the other hand the Hackers are *** smart. Also think it's funny how most people group the CS reps together as a single entity. Pretty sure if there was an MMO where CS was your enemy, everyone would play with extream prejudice

This problem seems to be getting worse. One of my most trusted officers/friends in game had all 3 of his accounts banned this week. We urged and then explained to him how to search for trojans and keyloggers both of which he found on his PC. What confuses/baffles me is that there were emails and traces that a new IP had accessed the accounts right before the gold selling started. This should be easy to track to see whether the gold selling activity was all from a new location. But the support team has completely dismissed all of his requests.

@dustinoverfield has now wiped his computer and has run scans to ensure that he is free of more keyloggers. I appreciate ZOS's efforts to remove gold sellers from the game, but if gold sellers are getting accounts by hacking them with keyloggers then the victims should not be further punished. Is there any way to talk to someone about the situation and look into the records of IP addresses? It simply doesn't make sense for a player to be a guildmaster of a guild with a bank balance of over 8 mil and then, after stepping down to a regular officer, to start trying to sell 100K in gold. What gold seller would leave alone that 8 million? The only reason the 8 mil is still in the guild bank is because we removed his permissions for that bank as soon as his first account was compromised and before the hackers got into his second account.
