ZeniMax, Please fix your game.

Dear ZeniMax,

Can you please fix your game? Just please?
Can you create one simple rule for every dungeon, trial, and multiplayer activity in ESO:

Players should only receive the rewards if they actually complete the content.
  • Dungeons: 100% clear = reward. No clear, no reward.
  • Trials: 100% clear = reward. No clear, no reward.
Simple, right?

Deal, ZeniMax?
Why not actually encourage players to play the game they logged in to play?
Right now, the game rewards players for skipping content while penalizing the players who actually want to play it.
We can't use this build or that build without being gatekept, kicked, or mocked.
We can't complete the damn quests in dungeons because other players decide that everyone should skip everything.
We can't even play the content anymore without being expected to skip it or being insulted for wanting to play it.
So seriously: why the hell would I keep paying for a game that reward me for NOT playing it?

I am completely tired of this.
If ZeniMax continues rewarding players who skip the content while punishing players who actually want to play it, then I'm done spending money on this game.
Fix the system. Make completing the content the thing that gets rewarded.
Until then, you won't get another cent from me.
I'm done.

Final note:
I will do everything I can to make sure my concerns reach Asha Sharma. What is happening with ESO is not right, and the current direction needs to change.

    Remove subclassing.
    Remove scribing.

    Bring back class identity.

Stop making super complex sets/skills that hammer server calculations every time they are spammed.

Focus on script kiddies killing pvp (no we aren't talking macros we are talking python scrips and more linking things like cmx to input commands, focus on the people running lag switching scripts in pvp.

Pretending these things aren't issues doesn't make them just go away - it's actually making everyone start to have to lean into them more to even have a chance.

Then play solo build and clear everything on your own, I am not fighting unnecessary trash/bosses/secret bosses when i just want to get through my random dungeon just because someone else wants to story mode it and look at study rock formations there, unless someone specifically asks to do some optional dungeon content I will skip whats skippable.

At least return AOE DPS of Tri Focus passive like it was for lightning staff pls =)

The same problem - play tank today - people first did not skip than start to run before tank to boss.

Strange logic. Hard to understand what people really want but as tank it was not interesting to play like that.

The whole "skip as much of every piece of content as possible to get to the end faster" mentality is frustrating, the only time I can complete group dungeon quests now is if i'm in a group with only guildies and only on vHM. In any other circumstance things line up in such a way where it becomes impossible to complete any group dungeon quest.

Even after completing the quests, rushing ahead and trying to skip everything is something I don't have the tolerance for, I want to play ESO, not run through it. A prime example of this is when I needed to do bloodroot forge for achievements and someone IMMEDIATELY pulled the boss without discussing anything despite saying I needed to do vHM at the beginning and that we(me and the person i was queued with) planned to hit the HM at the last boss. Our group opted to wipe so we could hit the HM and the person who pulled left without saying a word both at the beginning or after we wiped to cancel their early pull to do the HM.

The rush forward mentality is really detrimental in places like scalecaller peak HM where you have to hit the scroll every time you wipe, but having to reset the HM every time is a different conversation. It also gets really bad when you have DPS that can do damage but are so focused on rushing through that they ignore simple mechanics like bashing a boss or an ad and causing wipes over and over in something as easy as vBRP because PUGs refuse to respect mechanics.

P.S.: The OP's problems have nothing to do with the game itself, but how the community has shifted into disrespecting the content by circumnavigating intended gameplay and then treating other's badly for wanting to play the game as intended.

    To be honest, yes.

Why do you think these games take 6 years and $500m to make now a days?

There is an insane amount of middle management, bloat, HR, etc that is involved in all of these decisions. Thats exactly why everything is "Safe" and boring.. and its how you end up with studios making the same hero shooter 10 times over with 1k people playing them before they close their doors.

Subclassing hasn't destroyed any of my classes because I don't do it on characters that I don't want to. Class Mastery has made subclassing just one option and not at all mandatory in the interim. The refreshes have been bringing people back in and will probably continue to do so. Subclassing launched too imbalanced but it's not a big deal anymore.

    OP,

I get that you're upset and frustrated. There is no question that games, while they are intended to be fun, can cause frustration. Stories of thrown, broken controllers, mice slammed down on the desk, and so on, were common throughout my long history of gaming, which at this point is substantial. Sometimes one is angry at other players, sometimes at yourself, and sometimes at the game.

I have found, though, that insisting that your way of playing the game is the only right way to play, and that the others are playing it wrong, never ends well... even if it started because someone else did it first.

Very technically, the way ESO is structured, players do already receive more rewards if they fully play through the content. Gold and other items drop from all enemies. Chests and heavy sacks can be easily missed if one rushes past. Leads can be found in the most random of places. Any mob or boss skipped results in less gold, less drops, less lead chances, etc.

The problem, of course, is that some of the rewards received along the way aren't valuable to everyone. Every single one of us in ESO has limited time, and we all have the freedom to choose where we spend it. Also, because so many of the rewards are cosmetic (dyes, skins, etc.), they truly vary in the eye of the beholder.

There are, of course, some things that the game designers can do to encourage the population to play a certain way, and I am absolutely positive, because there have been so many threads about this, that the devs are very well aware that this can be a pain point.

However, the fact that ESO is an MMORPG means it's impossible for the devs to fully motivate every single player via rewards. Not all player enjoys all content. The absolute best way to avoid the frustration you're feeling is to accept that people you group up with may value a different play experience than you, and to try to find like-minded people via Guilds and the Group Finder to play with if your RNG with strangers hasn't been going well. Lastly, be polite to people who prefer to play differently, even if they aren't respectful to you, because otherwise... well, you're just adding to the problem.

Personally, I wouldn't be a fan of any kind of restrictive change that would require policing, additional role checks, or make it harder to have a friend jump in and help cover when someone drops because they wouldn't receive a reward. I would support some kind of bump to the quality of rewards that drop from optional bosses to encourage people to want to kill them.

My two cents. Best of luck and I'm sorry you had such a frustrating experience.
My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.

The current system in place is better than what you've proposed/demanded. Skipping mobs and extra bosses is totally acceptable behavior. If you're not OK with it, then it's up to you to communicate your expectations and agree with the others in the group as to how the dungeon will be run. And respect the fact that majority rules. If 3 members want to run it one way, then the outlier vote is overruled.

Well after having played all classes I can happily say I enjoy subclassing, being able to play using the skills I actually enjoy using, the closest we will get to a traditional ES game. Personally I am getting tired of the moaning about subclassing, and the nonsense that it has driven away so much of the population. If you don't like subclassing don't use it, not rocket science. As for scribing leave it alone I use it but I will say some of the class mastery scripts need an overhaul. Zos really have to stop balancing the game around pvp which has rapidly declining populations, should be focusing on the casuals, you know the ones who actually spend a lot of crowns. Worried about power creep? Increase boss resistances, especially for trials, so dps will have to start bringing more support to the group for pen etc.

    Subclassing is fun.
Just because you dont find it fun doesn't meant others don't.

Almost like whenever something is fun or not is subjective, isn't it?
I myself find the game more fun having more options to build my character, and no FOMO over a skill-style appearing for Templar that would be perfect for my Sorcerer.

According to statements made when subclassing was introduced, it was something that they talked about for a long time, and the motivation behind it was to give players more freedom to the players when building their characters.
Giving the players more options to shape their character's combat identity and customize their power fantasy.
Seeing how many skill lines, morphs, and options alone (not to mention sets and whatnot) we had even before subclassing was introduced, subclassing just the next step.

ZOS will not remove subclassing over few players complaining about that for one reason or another, no matter how many times they ask, because it takes ZOS' vision for giving the player more agency over their character's gameplay to the next level.

It just has to go through the growing pains, Class Refreshes, and tuning.
Class Masteries were introduced as a part of those, and part of preserving class' identity, giving player even more choices to build their characters.

Another thing is you cannot change your class once your character is made due to legacy system ESO was built upon, and subclassing is also a direct response to years of talking about it.

I'd also go as far as saying subclassing paves the road, as a tech test, for the future where tokens for class changes are reality.
Right not it's impossible due to how tightly related everything is to your character's class on a technical level; that's why you must have at least one native skill line on your character.

    100% this.
It's almost like the biggest sin ZOS committed was giving players more options and choices.

And when I say more customizations = better player engament (which is the case for many other games; customization is a form of player-input content that keeps people in) someone will come out of the woodworks saying "player numbers are dropping the game is dying bro it makes +15mil a month and ZOS actively works on it but its still dying trust me bro I couldn't queue for vet dungeon at 4am midweek so it means its dying look at this steam chart that doesn't account for console players bro the game is dead in the water cause I see only few people in [insert location] and I have no awareness of different game instances trust me bro they didn't listen to the changes I wanted and made changes I didn't want ZOS doesn't listen trust me bro ESO is dead and ZOS killed it"

I'm of course being facetious; it is a summary of different claims, arguments, and other forms of chatter I've seen both here and in game over the years.

I find myself playing ESO more often since subclassing was released, and seeing class refreshes being in the works makes me level character skill lines I neglected all this time.
Characters I rarely touched, but made to be my crafting mules, are seeing some gameplay as well.
I never thought I'd enjoy playing as a tank, but here there are my 5 different healers enjoying the company of my 4 different tanks, and 1 DPS I made long time ago was also dusted off, all because subclassing gave me lots of ideas to try.

If ZOS focused heavily on Scribing (giving more skills to use and customize), like one counterargument to subclassing I've seen suggested, we'd have the same exact situation and arguments anti-subclassing sentiment has.

If PvP really does have a declining population - I'm not surprised.
No matter the changes, nerfs, or buffs, that crowd can never be pleased.
I'm pretty sure majority of the anti-subclassing sentiment comes from there, but that's just observation on my part.

PvP'er here. You don't want to know how much me and a few others in our group spend in crowns/eso plus.

Funny, everytime I see a new apex mount release I'll easily see 40-50 people in PvP with it on day 1.

Oh the multi rider 4 person mount... who do you think has more of those PvE'rs or PvP'ers.

"Well... that one makes sense because blah blah blah". So your initial comment changed.. got it.

PvPers spend a stupid amount of money in this game.

Oh and the "you balance around PvP". Trust me.. you really don't want to have that conversation.

Just so I'm not misunderstanding what's going on here, to summarize: when a 3-person majority in a pug group chooses to skip an optional mini-boss that is intentionally made optional by design, you frame it as toxicity and gatekeeping. Then, after loads of people point out your own hypocrisy, you start a new thread demanding a "fix" from ZOS to force 100% of the playerbase to clear every single optional enemy and boss under threat of stripping their rewards?

Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of having optional content in the first place? Optional mini-bosses are optional by design. They grant buffs when cleared and skipping them speeds up the dungeon clear at the cost of losing out on some valuable buffs that may make fights easier. It's basic risk versus reward.

I mean, based on your exact same logic, this also apply to overland zones:
Overland zones: 100% clear = reward. No clear, no reward.
You also be stripped of all zone quest rewards until you do all the side quests. They're not "optional" any more!

In fact, why stop at ESO? Since you feel so strongly about this, we should apply this to other games as well, because everyone must enjoy 100% of all content before being rewarded.

    Skyrim:
You are prevented from killing Alduin and beating the game until you join the Dark Brotherhood, complete the Thieves Guild, and kill Paarthurnax.
    Elden Ring:
You are barred from entering the Erdtree and beating the game until you defeat all optional field bosses, clear every catacomb, and kill Malenia.
    Grand Theft Auto V:
The final heist is locked until you complete all 50 Stunt Jumps, find every letter scrap, and do all the "Strangers and Freaks" side missions.
    Helldivers 2:
Zero rewards and no extraction allowed unless 100% of bug nests and side objectives are cleared.

Look, you've been complaining non-stop about players forcing their playstyle on you, but all that people are seeing right now is that you are forcing your playstyle on everyone else. If you want a guaranteed 100% full-clear run, the Group Finder is a good place to start. Expecting PUG groups to cater exclusively to your personal criteria (and demanding ZOS hold everyone else's loot hostage until they do) is just attempting to enforce your entitlement on top of what is supposed to be cooperative content.

Oh no, no, no... this thread doesn't make any sense anymore.
I finally understand it. Skipping is the way ESO is supposed to be played!
I just did 10 veteran pledges, no DLC, across 5 different chars, without even moving.

Close this thread! I was wrong. Skipping is damn good!
    >>> You guys showed me how to play ESO <<<. Thank you!
