The fact noone from ZOS is responding and just saying what's up says something is up.

They're usually silent on the subject of crown sales. That's not much of an indicator.

This is accurate. We normally do not comment on sales. If we do, most of the time it's to note on of two things.
    1. When a sale is actively live.
    2. Or to note we cannot comment on a sale. Please make sure to keep an eye on our social channels for future sales updates.

In this case, please make sure to keep an eye on our social channels for any future crown sales announcements.

Also, we don't normally run multiple sales actively at the same time. Currently, the only active sale is the Bethesda 40 anniversary sale.

appreciate the feedback, but honestly discounting eso from 10 to 5 bucks that you can find on discount every other week somewhere is not exactly a huge benefit to anyone :D

To keep the same language going, it is more likely than not that if there ever is another crown sale it will take place after the bethesda40 sale ends.

My educated guess is that the relevant department - I remember job listings for FO76 specifically for monetisation, I guess is the same in ZOS? - keeps anything regarding monetization 'very close to their chests' and the community team is just not at liberty to disclose.

The standard price for Crowns is widely seen as too high compared to the digital rewards available in the store. Management might think players will eventually buy them anyway, but they are making a fundamental economic mistake.

Customer attrition analytics, players ARE buying crowns anyway. Just like Las Vegas has done, Microsoft calculated an increase in profits if they let the customers with little disposable income fall off while they focus on extracting more money from the customers that can afford it. Last week I spent $300 on crown crates just so I could get enough Mad God's Monarch Flocks to fill an entire garden. I'm a fool with my money, but I am not alone and Microsoft is banking on the housing whales. I would guess most of ESO's crown sales are due to housing & furniture FOMO.

Unfortunately for all of us, customer attrition is only a Band-Aid covering up the fact that you cannot have an economy which grows in profit indefinitely. At some point we are going to be living under technological feudalism wherein corporations no longer care about profit because they own everything.

Hey @VileNord , thank you so much for this incredibly detailed explanation and your sharp insights!
Your breakdown of customer attrition analytics and the 'whale-focused' strategy makes perfect sense from a corporate perspective, even if it’s frustrating for us as players.
Your outlook on tech-feudalism is deeply thought-provoking.
Also, thanks for your honesty! :)
Spending $300 to fill a garden with Mad God's Monarch Flocks is the ultimate proof that Microsoft's strategy works perfectly!
At least your garden must look brilliantly insane now.
Appreciate you taking the time to share this perspective!

Needless to say this is another huge mistake during a very fragile time for the game. And im just not sure why zos keeps making these strange choices and then giving vague responses.

Like ok, you cant talk about sales. But considering the ridiculous amount of dooming surrounding eso, due to recent events, and so many players now being worried about the future of eso, and being on the fence about playing, couldn't we make an exception here and talk about it?

Or better yet, cant you guys just not do things out of the norm like this? There is no good time to not do a crown sale that has always happened, but this is probably the worst time. People have grown to expect this sale, because we always have it. And when the future of the game is perceived to be uncertain, by some players, things like this just make it worse.

Its the same thing with the warden refresh. Idk whats happening but I hope im wrong and we get a sale right after quake con.
Its just a strange thing to do, and the timing is really bad. And the response is vague. This could be an easy win, and i hope it turns into that.

When an answer stating they don't do multiple type of sales/events is given and immediately able to be disproved, the non answer to me reads they were not planning the sale this year. That may change with the influx of complaints and maybe that is why they gave the non answer that way so they can change their mind and save face.

I mean I can keep going but point should be received. It seems like the crown sales and not having other sales is something new to this year.

From a marketing perspective, "sales" and other "discounts" are traditionally part of a larger promotional campaign that often includes some form of advertising. This year ZOS wasn't part of any Quakecon promotion, but ESO did join in the Bethesda 40 promotion, which is more closely aligned to the greater Elder Scrolls IP/brand. In that context, a "sale" on Crowns doesn't necessarily fit within a marketing campaign promoting Bethesda generally.

As @RagnarSw has pointed out, past ESO promotions were obviously multifaceted campaigns, which included simultaneous discounts (i.e. "sales") on Crowns, the base game, and even Chapters, when they were a thing. Likewise, the in-game Crown Store often has it's own discounts related to in-game events and new content, like the recent new Thieves Guild and Sheogorath stories. Perhaps it would have been better said that ZOS doesn't normally run multiple, competing promotions, which can include sales and discounts.

The real issue here is that over the years players got used to a regular and predictable series of promotions. Players have come to expect and rely on Crown "sales," game discounts, and free trials of ESO+ at certain times of the year, which historically aligned to the roll-out of new game content and external events, like Quakecon. The shift from Chapters to Seasons has not only changed the cadence of new content development and its release, but it's now directly affecting players' wallets.

While ZOS never announced "sales" ahead of time, savvy Players knew roughly when they could save real-world money on buying in-game currency. Most unfortunately, the lack of a Crown Sale during Quakecon breaks with the traditions players have come to expect over a very long time. Such sudden changes, without explanation or advanced notification, create uncertainty and potentially animosity for a beloved game at a time when there is already so much upheaval and uncertainty in real life.

Meanwhile, let's hope there's a new promotion announced soon that does include a sale on ESO Crowns at a discount.

I'd like to point out that in previous years, Bethesda's celebrations didn't stop you from holding sales. There's definitely something else going on here—it's not just Bethesda's 40th anniversary.

Well, I wanted to buy 21k Crowns during the sale so I could change my character’s name and gender, and also buy West Weald for one of my alt accounts (I don’t have ESO+ there), but it turned out that the money will just stay in my wallet. Sorry, ZOS, but no sale = no money for you. It’s that simple...
