Silver Linings From The Roadmap Update: The Anti-Doomer Perspective

I want to start this off by saying that it seems, based on what I've read within the community. That many of us do not view the mass firings as a positive thing, I know some of you do and I am not here to argue that position for the 1,000th time. But I recognize that bad things have been happening, and that it gets more and more difficult to not become jaded and expect the worst or see the worst in things.

I wanted to take the 2026-2027 Roadmap updates from Nick and the team, and discuss more of the silver linings in all of this and what my more positive perspectives are about it, including the promotion of Nick. We all know the negatives, I will still cover the ones mentioned in the update. But I primarily wanted to give my opinion about the positives.

*Disclaimer* I also want to make very clear, it is 100% okay to be upset, sad, disappointed, have criticisms etc.

My entire beef, is with exaggerators, doomers claiming the game is about to be shut down or is already dead and ruined. Especially creators who farm the negativity bandwagons when it's popular for clicks. I will eat the down votes to not follow suit on that BS.

New Leadership & Studio Outlook

•New Direction: Nick Giacomini
, former Director of Project Management, has taken over for Rich Lambert. He is credited as a key figure behind recent player focused improvements like better communication, class reworks, and new zone content. He was literally one of the main people who had to wear many different hats in different departments, to help decide what changes to make and gauge how they preformed with us.
Community Assurance: The leadership emphasizes that ESO is not moving into "maintenance mode" and is committed to long term expansion despite recent industry wide restructuring.

Roadmap & Delayed Content

2027 Delays: Due to ongoing team restructuring, several major projects have been pushed to 2027, including:
The Crimson Veltd trial (featuring new mounted combat and other mechanics) Definitely a bummer, because anything new mechanic wise is very welcomed in ESO in my book.
Update 52: which will include a new Geralt Pass PvP zone (This will be in January, so at least it is not pushed months late into 2027.)
Class Reworks: which now have no fixed date (The largest bummer of them all as we know, there isn't a single person I have spoken to who isn't excited for their class to be reworks, for balance to be better in ESO, and who didn't already want it sooner before.)

The Silver Lining: Nick did comment on the imbalance issues we have been enduring, and noted that he will be pushing the team to figure out how to temporarily relieve some of that balance stress. I imagine they will be considering % buffs to the non reworked classes in the interim. Which is a needed compensation that is very doable while we wait.

2026 Content (On Track):
Sheogorath Story Quests & Golden Pursuit: Obviously this is live now, and most players know this. But for anyone reading and away. This did not get delayed, you can get at it now. :)
Nowhere Vault: A new challenge area focusing on puzzles and navigation, launching September 28th, I am SUPER excited about this because the type of content being discussed is right up my alley. Less about min maxing and fighting a beast with more HP, and more about practicing movement, skills, puzzle games etc. 🥳🎉
Whitestrakes Mayhem Event: August 5th to Aug 12th (Nothing new, not shocking that it's still landing.)
Rumors: A new RPG style quest integration where players must track down clues without heavy reliance on UI markers and highlighted guide systems.
Rewards: Players can look forward to a new Golden Pursuit event on August 20th featuring 20 free crown crates
High Seas Event: A brand new world event launching September 30th, THIS is going to be awesome from what I can tell and I am looking forward to this a lot. Super glad they got this far along enough before the team got hacked apart in order to still release it on time.

Quality of Life & System Updates

Player Requested Features:

•The devs are adding achievement pinning
•customizable HUD (for keyboard/PC)
•a house sorting system.
•improvements to Antiquities
•adding transmutation stations to Cyrodiil
•Quest starter language improvements
•Eidetic memory improvements to help with tracking what you have seen and done already
•improvements to Hybridization/sub classing (This is definitely needed and can be interesting)
PvP Changes: Three sided battlegrounds are returning permanently on September 28th

Upcoming Events (Season 2)

Solo Dungeons: Launching October 21st, starting with Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices. Another banger addition to the game, I very much so look forward to experiencing this and seeing how much fun they will be assuming they continue to create more.

Also worth noting that these two dungeons will be free around this time and from then on, October 12th before the solo versions come out. Anyone with the base game access can play them in their normal team capacity. So you can experience them totally normal, and then try the solo version when it launches as a contrast. Very cool and inclusive addition.

Free Content: Greymoor and Markarth DLCs will become part of the base game on November 9th, granting all players access to the Antiquities, Scrying, and Excavation systems. (This is HUGE, it not only is another DLC being added to base game for non subscribing players. But it heavily blurs the gap of balance many players have complained about over the years, since free players will now be able to obtain many of those mythics and various rewards they were gate kept from before.
•At this time, they will add an Antiquity themed Golden Pursuit to boost involvement rewards and make the experience that much more fun. That will be live November 9th as well, and run till December 2nd.
•They have heard the complaints about the Tamriel Tome, and are making even more improvements. They will be adding more challenges which are inclusive to more play styles. So less players feel locked out or pigeon holed if they do not partake in various aspects of the game like PvP. They will also be increasing the point carry over maximum like players have demanded, from 2,000 to ???? unclear at this time.
*Summoning @ZOS_NickG for this bit* -Suggestion- honestly, even if its 100% more people will be happier. But what I would prefer to see, is a MUCH larger cap. And have the points be worth a lot more gold. So you have a true choice on your hands, keep like 15,000 points to speed through the next season OR fill your coin purse with some millions of gold. You decide how many to lock, or how many to leave unlocked to convert before the transition date.
Frost Atronach Crown Crates will have their rewards be purchasable in the Bazaar!? Now, this one should be great for most players who are in the "Ive got nothing to spend bars on" camp. Since these are usually $ items or very difficult Seals investments. These crates are old for sure, but them being accessible through another free means is a win in my books.

Not shocking, the New Life Festrival and Witches Festival will return as you would expect. I do not imagine they will have time or resources to change them in meaningful or exciting ways, so these will likely be essentially the same as years prior.
And then Nick reconfirms they are not aiming for maintenance mode, but are growing the game and actively working toward catching up after the large blow and integration of Bethesda team. We of course have heard plenty of rumors of labor shifting ZOS into Bethesda for ES6, but there has been no proof of that. And no proof that it would be a one way street, especially after ES6 launches.

There can be as many assumptions as people want to have about this just being corpo speak, but they are just pessimistic assumptions until otherwise. What we can both agree on, is that MS can definitely alter the plans of ZOS staff at any moment and wash these plans away. Sure, but I don't see valid reasons to go that extreme with ESO. And the absolute worst case scenario for ESO, would be end of production/expansion.
Not server closure, I think that is a nearly impossible outcome for such a game with a major title and so many fans. So the "servers gonna shut down" doomers are the least rational. MS would likely follow suit of many before it, and make profits off the game while paying the very affordable server costs these days. With a small handful of low paid employees to manage it as is. IF we ever went down the worst case scenario path.
The positives I see nearly no one talking about, is how good it could be to have more integration from the Beth team on certain decisions and story congruence with the main titles. And how we could see a lot more pertinent references to beloved aspects of the other ES titles, especially those in active production. In real time.
I would love an event which nods to or celebrates the launch of ES6, within ESO.

That is about every aspect of the Roadmap update and what I feel about it. Has this update been an extremely negative thing for you? Positive? Did I raise any points which slightly impact that feeling? Or not really?

Either way, I hope you all are having fun in whatever capacity you enjoy ESO. And if you aren't, a break is always an option especially if you were waiting for one of the major updates that got pushed. We will be here when you get back, and maybe that's a better happier option for some.
GL HF out there. <3

Hate to break it to you, and you can disagree, but it's a fact that the game is ruined for anyone in PvP not playing WW/DK/Sorc.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but let's not downplay how bad implementing DK and WW into PvP in their current states have made the experience.

And anyone that thinks otherwise, go play a low level BG without crafted gold gear. You know what, even with it I think you still won't be able to take on the WWs in there.

It's great someone is looking forward to the "content" they are adding. I'm not, especially after experiencing how "dynamic" content could be.

I don't downplay this at all, I note it heavily as a large detriment to the game. There is no disagreement and it's an extremely valid thing to be upset about.
I also state that I am very glad Nick is thinking of a solution in the interim for the other classes, since waiting for the reworks is not feasible.

If only glanced at, I think the message behind the post can be taken very incorrectly.

I have told many people that them taking a break, or even quitting is fully understandable. It's not like im criticizing them or you at all. If the main thing you prefer to do, is actively not fun to you. Then it would be illogical for me to demand you to or criticize you for not playing.

These are just the silver linings I have taken from the situation from my perspective, but I can totally see how some players might not care about a single thing I listed and that's okay.

My only direct and pointed gripe, was with doomers speaking on behalf of the game and everyone else. NOT how they personally feel about the state of it for them. Very different.

Yeah, I mean don't get me wrong. People being upset or bored right now is understandable and fine for players with various preferences and wants.

But there is a lack of decorum and honesty with a lot of the complaining side, many go straight to a "burn it all down" type mentality sadly.

yeah i dont understand the doomers lol

literally have heard people say "the game is dying" for the past 12 years lol

pvp balance has always been terrible, if it wasnt a DK/ww meta, it would have stayed in the warden charm meta, or the meta before that, etc

good news for those who hate unbalanced pvp, vengeance IS an option, it is different than normal cyro, but it is far far more balanced than any other form of pvp in the game right now (even during the test with set procs, which isnt fully live yet because they probably need to fix a host of issues related to it such as some sets not being active)

would i have liked to have more class reworks and the new trial sooner? of course but i do understand what they are going through, losing half of your team at once is not an easy thing to work around, every product has to be rescoped to account for new/smaller teams working on things

the biggest problems i see with people nowadays is:
    • entitlement (always has to be about them, zero comprising for other people)
    • zero patience (gotta have everything now)
    plays PC/NA
    handle @Necrotech_Master
    active player since april 2014

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (fully filled out with current game), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

This. I really do not understand the complaining about the dk/ww meta. There is always a meta, and there will always be try-hard ball groups exploiting it to their advantage. Been this was for years!

Its the exploits that need checking. (And giving ww more susceptibility to poison again. Please.)

Nick's great and the change overall has been well received. There's still vestiges of shutdown culture that linger though. And that's the biggest issue for me right now. The way that the Warden refresh has been handled is pretty bad.

It's hard not to feel like they're a little selective with their transparency. Combat still has yet to open up the way other teams have and it's on Nick to push his teams to communicate better. He put out a letter and didn't even mention the Warden, so I feel like he shares some fault now. It's no secret that the combat team and its history of decisions have been controversial. He's not new to the company, so he should be aware of that, and guide combat related communication accordingly.

And there's still a big gap between what they say and what they do. They've said they want a rewarding game, but each new feature has sent them back to improve the rewards. It's great there's some feedback being actioned, but it feels like a lack of institutional knowledge and lessons learned being documented. It also tells me that some people don't quite understand how to make the game rewarding from the get-go.

They're also heavily focused on FOMO and engagement incentives at the expense of fun. We're still having to tell them when RNG is ruining experiences. Again, goes back to lessons learned. With Nick being a long-time employee, I'd expect him to better push for more palatable experiences. Maybe we'll get there. I can see some of this is attributable to their two rounds of layoffs.

But I'm sorry, regardless of personal sympathy, I won't spend time or money on a game that's not fun.

I think the New World shutdown shocked a lot of people. That trauma is applicable here because Microsoft is a corporate giant, just like Amazon, and is focused on things outside of the gaming world.

Even if ZOS themselves aren't targeting maintenance mode, it's hard not to expect something bad to happen. The layoffs were one blow, some of us are waiting for more blows to come. And I don't think that's unreasonable.

Going back to my point about withholding my time and money, I think that trend will worsen with their slower development. I can see that leading to a maintenance mode or shutdown situation. Obviously not what I want, but I'm being realistic here.

I'm not confident they fully appreciate how much of a bummer that is. And I feel like this is going to sink the game for a lot of people.

The best thing they could do right now is an AMA and answer some hardball questions about combat; it's well overdue. Because seeing Warden pushed out so far, a lot of us are questioning what that means for the larger refresh effort. They were advised against doing piecemeal because of the very real possibility something like this could happen.

And I'm not arguing timeline here with people, but the Warden was weeks from PTS and now it's nowhere near. Something happened. If they can't give us any degree of confidence on that front, then sorry, you're going to lose people.

That's fine, and it's a reasonable compromise. I just worry it will become more technical debt that ultimately slows down the combat refresh initiative.

I agree that many people were in shock and denial about the rug pull and cancel that Amazon pulled with New World, but I will say that I had been posting warnings about it the months leading up to the outcome. I won't say I knew they were going to fully shut down in a year or so. But People were getting very hyped about the additions and I was witnessing them doing the marketing for the expansion, and it immediately triggered my memory of the initial launch and I did fully predict them dropping the game after.

It does not mean I can or will get that right with every game, every company or every scenario. But I just feel like the puzzle pieces here are VERY different between the two, even if there are some similarities in some ways. I see more reasons for Microsoft not to do it, than I see for them to do it. As to where New World was purely a money pit test, and then a guinea pig, and then completely pointless. (From Amazons business perspective I mean).

ESO is still massively profitable from what we know, even more so now after they fired so many high earners which sucks terribly. But it's worth mentioning financially. ESO also is a conduit and an Elderscrolls waiting room + major marketing tool for a major IP. And Microsoft in zero ways is "testing out the waters in gaming" like Amazon/AGS was, they are extremely deeply immersed for one of the longest time spans while also being so massive. So we don't have the same concern of them wanting to scrap all of their gaming endeavors for AI slop in the same way I don't think.
They will adopt plenty of AI slop im sure, and implement it into games they already run and own.

All that being said, we definitely cannot perfectly predict a massive corp like Microsoft for sure. All we can know, is that whatever seems most profitable. Will be done. So we have to hope that ESO can remain stable and profitable, and that production does not fail so hard from their cuts that it can't be. I've got both fingers crossed.
Because the servers won't be shut down, that I can say confidently. But a maintenance mode could come FAR more prematurely if staff costs aren't displaying quarterly/annual growth in profits im sure.

As long as they fix some bugs like the first person 2handed animations we're in good track.

I've never seen such embarrassing bugs like this in any game or mmorpg. This specific one has not been fixed for at least 3 major patches so far.Just remove first person altogether at this point, damn.

From a new player perspective some other things like finding single lockpicks in big chests are disheartening. Why can't they just fix the loot pool for this?Is it really gonna ruin the economy that much?Going into a cave and getting single lockpicks from chests is stupid.

Also, how about they put new enemy animations?Going through the main story+4-5 dlc areas and seeing the same 2 animations on enemies is tiring.I've never seen such poor number of animations in any other game. How can anyone stand this tbh?

    Roadmap looks though yeah.

If the doomcallers have been screaming that the game is dying for 12 years, then that somehow proves it will never die? How the hell are those two things even related?

You're no better than the doomcallers you're just standing at the opposite end of the spectrum. They insist the game has been dead for 12 years. You insist it's been perfect for 12 years. Different conclusions, same fanaticism.

The problem is that people who have their criticism ignored for years eventually get pushed toward the doomcaller camp. Not because they necessarily believe the game is dead, but because after years of being dismissed or ignored by ZOS, they stop believing things will ever improve. Their frustration turns into cynicism.

The only difference is that ZOS benefits from your zealotry, so they have no reason to push back against it. Ignoring criticism while rewarding blind positivity only pushes more people toward the opposite extreme.

I believe this to be a problem we see in all aspects of our country or many parts of the world these days. "If you aren't my extreme, you are the other extreme!!"

When that is a very false narrative.

There are numerous issues with the game, even more concerning factors with the parent company and what they might do to ZOS and ESO. There have been plenty of missteps, blundered changes, communication issues etc.

Just because I do not throw a fit and claim the entire game is going to be shut down and try to convince everyone I see in fan pages and forums intended for enjoying the game, does not mean I disregard the issues nor fully excuse them.
I personally just find that extreme, a very low to zero value way to behave. And in many ways, just adds onto the already overwhelming negative nature far too many people exist within as their baseline.

And if I felt so strongly negative about such things, I would distance myself from them. Which I have done many times in my life, in games and outside of them. Because 1. it's not good for you at that point. & 2. You are likely to become a drain on others who are not in that headspace within said thing.

I get that It's hard to imagine that as one person feels the game is RAVAGED and the devs "hate them" which I see a lot of people claiming on certain doomer videos, and even repeated by the creator.
    That...
Another player is logging on and having a great time, with their friends, family or even solo. And the problems with the game, or how things are handled at ZOS are not the end of the world.

Just because you are feeling this way about the game, does not mean that everyone else must. And that is really what catches me most about the doomer mentality. It's almost always tied to going around and throwing it into the faces of people who are having fun, mocking them, laughing at them, calling them dumb and various other insults... ANGRY that people are not as bothered as them. You can think that is healthy and okay, but I very strongly disagree.

I'm worse than a doomer. I'm presently in complete apathy.

Maybe I'll wake up in a year or so when Templar is reworked with more than a dps nerf and an armor buff as their balancng.

    >Imo< that's not worse than a doomer, and is completely fine to feel that way. I hope the game becomes fun and an optimistic experience for you again some day, and if it doesn't. I hope that you enjoy whatever other game you end up playing instead.

I am apathetic to many games of my past, but I am not doomer stalking them trying to tear it down for the remaining players. WoW is a good example of this for me, and my 15 years in WoW also had me experience a decade and a half of doomers.
