Maybe English is not their first language and they are using the archaic use of the now insult.

There's a difference between a narrative having dark themes vs players insulting other people. Or does racism in guilds become okay because the altmer do it too?
Maybe Im biased because Im a biracial black American but the two examples here are not equal and it is really annoying seeing people always pull out this excuse to justify being offended for everything else.
Why does derogatory language against one marginalized group of people need to be equal to another group for it to be valid? Why can't both be unacceptable, even if not equal in historical scope/context?
Because that alleged derogatory language was accepted terminology once upon a recent time, and its always shifting, and this game has a lot of different cultures and people of different countries in it, who do not adhere to very western, very american especially, concepts of what is or is not appropriate or "malicious". Racism is pretty universally known to be bad, and malicious. The op's example however whether people here agree or not isn't.
And because this topic is so sensitive I think I'll make this my last response, Im sure the moderators will be cleaning this up soon anyway.
No names were shown. Do you see any naming or shaming?
The insulting word is visible on the screenshot. From what I know, in the USA, even writing out unaccepted words to factually discuss them is frowned upon. They get replaced by "r-word", "a-word", "l-word", "z-word" (making those up right now as I have no clue) or whatever instead, and people seem to know what it means. Which, honestly, is super confusing for people in other cultures where words aren't taboos themselves and the context is the thing that matters (also, the notion you must describe a thing as clearly as possibly to discuss it), but it's how it is - different cultures, different habits.
I look at the context of the word being used in OPs example, and it seems obvious they are trying to insult away people they see as inferior to them by some form of capacity. Why defend that? Why put the blame on everyone except the person who is being insulting? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Elaborating on this since its addressed to me, but otherwise I've said my piece.
I dont believe it was meant to be discriminatory at all, I've heard many guild leads for trial groups for instance say this in voice not against people who are actually mentally disabled, but as a way to tell people to use some common sense and don't do things most are well aware not to do, basically adhere to common etiquette and so on.
This is exactly why this word needs to be taken out of consideration for being against tos and look at the usage on a case by case basis, because they definitely are not all equal. To me this in the op response is so harmless, and it annoys me because I've reported cases that are far more malicious than this, and it was ignored, in reference to real life events and politics concerning deaths of innocent people, and players using this to bait chat about it.
^That is malicious. Telling people not to "act like an idiot" using that word is not the same, nor is it derogatory.
Why would all of the mistreatment and abuse to the people who were assigned to mental asylums and the like also not he seen as bad? I look at the context of the word being used in OPs example, and it seems obvious they are trying to insult away people they see as inferior to them by some form of capacity.
Part of the problem is legally using certain language is punishable by law in some countries. I agree with your posts, but the problem is currently more serious than simply ignore. ZOS has to comply or they would be punished by law. Sad, yet really scary.
I even get a wry chuckle when I get t-bagged in BGs...

I viewed being T-bagged as a badge of honor. It means my defeat was meaningful to them, and a twisted sign of respect.
Also if I'm using a build where 4 people wail on me helplessly for a while, and I finally go down, let them have their little celebration.
I will miss this. It's been a thing in pvp games for a while but I'm not sure what changed that it became so upsetting to the level it is today.

That's a fun take. I usually am just a healer in BGs, and depending on the enemy team I can either make my group invincible, or I die in 2 seconds.
Usually it's just the latter that gets emotes from players since I was obviously not healing enough, which garners no respect. I haven't had a whole group of four celebrate on me before 😳 but I think that's because whenever I am able to retain the attention of an entire group, it becomes just a long stalemate.

Oh in PvP getting the healer down is inately a win, whether you are a tanky healer or not. They are probably celebrating preventing you from the situation where you made your team invincible.
Nothing feels better as a pvp healer than being ignored while you just undo everything they are doing to the rest of your team lol. I'm not often ignored on healer, but when I am I get so much amusement.

There was one time recently where we had a random group with THREE healers on our team, and at least one healer on the enemy team. It was probably the most fun battleground I've had. They couldn't kill us, and we couldn't really do damage to them. It was a deathmatch, and after running out of time for the first round someone in our group said to focus just on the low ChampPoint enemy, and we did. Through a bunch of light attacks, we started to rack up a few slow kills whenever they were distanced from their healer, and we won by just having a few points on the board.
It was a fun change of pace and strategy. So much lag and bright lights with all the heal AoEs...
Most people know quite well that certain words are negative even if they do not know why exactly.
Most people know quite well that certain words are negative even if they do not know why exactly.
But the significance people or cultures give to specific words differs. "Stupid" is a normal word where I grew up. Everyone knows there are smart people and stupid people, and even smart people do stupid things at times (and sometimes, stupid people might also do something smart). It's just how the world is and it's no big deal here.
How much people even care for words also differs. There's also that notion here (though it seems to slowly change with younger generations) that the internet is, well, the internet. Someone directly yelling a slur at someone's face is seen as something different (also probably because of the potentially more dangerous situation because you're actually face to face with the aggressive person) than some idiot writing some idiotic insult towards someone in an online post or chat. The reason: If it's online, you can click once, and the person and their insults are "gone".
stupid is a normal word globally.
Most languages have their own versions.
Ableism and most other bigotry is normalised globally

Such a ridiculous take. There are lots of things inappropriate for a video game forum. I could wax elegant about my parents health problems and it would rightfully get removed. Are you ruled by my parents?
