Maybe English is not their first language and they are using the archaic use of the now insult.

I think one issue really is that some languages don't differenciate much between different words to call someone an idiot. There are no levels that make one word meant to call someone an idiot more insulting and another one less. No matter which English word with that intention I see, for me they all just translate to "idiot" if I read them. I've noticed by now that the word with r is seen as more unacceptable, but I couldn't say if the words with d, i or m are worse than just saying the word "idiot" or not.

It's also not exactly something you learn in foreign language lessons (neither in school nor privately), let alone many people probably didn't even learn English that well (and probably pick up a lot of English from the things they see online). Not excusing the usage of insulting words, just giving my perspective on how sometimes people might not even realize how unaccepted a term they use might be in English.

Really wish zos would just tell people to have thicker skin instead of encouraging reporting for every little thing that offends people in a game with slavery murder and other stuff in relation to the now "King of Schemes" I probably can't even say on these forums. Everything from this to reporting for bagging as harrassment needs to go away for a game allegedly for 17+

There's a difference between a narrative having dark themes vs players insulting other people. Or does racism in guilds become okay because the altmer do it too?

Maybe Im biased because Im a biracial black American but the two examples here are not equal and it is really annoying seeing people always pull out this excuse to justify being offended for everything else.

Why does derogatory language against one marginalized group of people need to be equal to another group for it to be valid? Why can't both be unacceptable, even if not equal in historical scope/context?

Because that alleged derogatory language was accepted terminology once upon a recent time, and its always shifting, and this game has a lot of different cultures and people of different countries in it, who do not adhere to very western, very american especially, concepts of what is or is not appropriate or "malicious". Racism is pretty universally known to be bad, and malicious. The op's example however whether people here agree or not isn't.

And because this topic is so sensitive I think I'll make this my last response, Im sure the moderators will be cleaning this up soon anyway.

Yes, that is something I'm aware of. In official settings it's discussed how language is always shifting, and more and more forms of language become barred and inappropriate to use in their once official context. If you saw my other reply, you'd see I'd mentioned that this type of word might be especially confusing for others who don't speak the language, as this word is still used in its original meaning today when not addressing people.

And yeah, of course racism is commonly seen as bad. Why would all of the mistreatment and abuse to the people who were assigned to mental asylums and the like also not he seen as bad?

I look at the context of the word being used in OPs example, and it seems obvious they are trying to insult away people they see as inferior to them by some form of capacity. Why defend that? Why put the blame on everyone except the person who is being insulting? It just doesn't make sense to me.

The insulting word is visible on the screenshot. From what I know, in the USA, even writing out unaccepted words to factually discuss them is frowned upon. They get replaced by "r-word", "a-word", "l-word", "z-word" (making those up right now as I have no clue) or whatever instead, and people seem to know what it means. Which, honestly, is super confusing for people in other cultures where words aren't taboos themselves and the context is the thing that matters (also, the notion you must describe a thing as clearly as possibly to discuss it), but it's how it is - different cultures, different habits.

As a US resident, I can state with relative confidence that it is perfectly acceptable to use the r-word. It's only frowned upon when it's used contextually as a slur. It is not uncommon to hear it used appropriately.

Elaborating on this since its addressed to me, but otherwise I've said my piece.

I dont believe it was meant to be discriminatory at all, I've heard many guild leads for trial groups for instance say this in voice not against people who are actually mentally disabled, but as a way to tell people to use some common sense and don't do things most are well aware not to do, basically adhere to common etiquette and so on.

This is exactly why this word needs to be taken out of consideration for being against tos and look at the usage on a case by case basis, because they definitely are not all equal. To me this in the op response is so harmless, and it annoys me because I've reported cases that are far more malicious than this, and it was ignored, in reference to real life events and politics concerning deaths of innocent people, and players using this to bait chat about it.

^That is malicious. Telling people not to "act like an idiot" using that word is not the same, nor is it derogatory.

Didnt you already complain about having your account having a strike on it, and that post was removed yesterday? Absolutely noticed the snarky comment about if you needed the players address. Considering yesterday you were so angry that you couldn't just ban people without proof, and had to write a report with player details. So this is what you're going to do now... Post every injustice you see and complain about how you can't bully other people every day... Good thing the forums has a magical report button, because this is getting ridiculous. You need to step away from your computer and cool down for a few weeks. The forums is not the place for your toggled crusade.

    I can appreciate that viewpoint.

At the end of the day, I still think there are better and more respectful ways for them to say what they're trying to say, and I see reports as a way to incorporate that into the games social environment.
And yes, it's definitely frustrating when something that is much more dire does not get the response that is appropriate to each case's scenario.

As I mentioned, I don't think the average non-native English speaker thinks of mental institutions when using that word. Not only did not all cultures even have asylums, I think for the average person, that term just feels like it translates to "idiot", and with "idiot", they mean a person who's doing something dumb. It doesn't touch on topics like psychology, mental health, or even general capability or intelligence.

Why someone thinks they need to put "No idiots!" into a description, and if that's how we want to interact with each other here, is a different topic.

Part of the problem is legally using certain language is punishable by law in some countries. I agree with your posts, but the problem is currently more serious than simply ignore. ZOS has to comply or they would be punished by law. Sad, yet really scary.

I'm not sure if this topic is allowed on these forums, but I'd be curious where that would be? I know that where I live directly insulting a person is forbidden. But if someone would go to the police and tell them "A guy called me an idiot in an online game!" - let's say people would find that very strange.

seems way better and simpler for the Group Finder request's requirement to be more specific and say something like
"Please know the mechanics" or "Pay attention to our directions".

This discussion reminds me of the phrase i occasionally see in the ESO community:
    "do not stand in stupid"
Which i believe would be lengthened as:
"do not stand in enemy's Areas Of Effect"
the second one will be understood by more people.

That's a fun take. I usually am just a healer in BGs, and depending on the enemy team I can either make my group invincible, or I die in 2 seconds.
Usually it's just the latter that gets emotes from players since I was obviously not healing enough, which garners no respect. I haven't had a whole group of four celebrate on me before 😳 but I think that's because whenever I am able to retain the attention of an entire group, it becomes just a long stalemate.

Oh in PvP getting the healer down is inately a win, whether you are a tanky healer or not. They are probably celebrating preventing you from the situation where you made your team invincible.

Nothing feels better as a pvp healer than being ignored while you just undo everything they are doing to the rest of your team lol. I'm not often ignored on healer, but when I am I get so much amusement.

There was one time recently where we had a random group with THREE healers on our team, and at least one healer on the enemy team. It was probably the most fun battleground I've had. They couldn't kill us, and we couldn't really do damage to them. It was a deathmatch, and after running out of time for the first round someone in our group said to focus just on the low ChampPoint enemy, and we did. Through a bunch of light attacks, we started to rack up a few slow kills whenever they were distanced from their healer, and we won by just having a few points on the board.

It was a fun change of pace and strategy. So much lag and bright lights with all the heal AoEs...

(Edited to add it was a 4v4)

That actually feels like an epic BG and I love how you were able to use strategy to pull off a win. I'm not a fan of the current "Whip, Whip Dead" meta I have seen of late and I would have loved to have been in that round you were in, even on the losing side.

stupid is a normal word globally.
Most languages have their own versions.
Ableism and most other bigotry is normalised globally, similarly it is very normal to refer to people as b*tch or crazy.

it is not a positive word regardless of how normalised it is and something like "stand in stupid" will not be properly understood by everyone.

Well, there lies the cultural difference perhaps: No one here thinks being stupid or doing stupid things is a shame. And even less so such a horrible shame that people should avoid the word and act like stupidity doesn't exist.
