Today as I was driving my dwarven spider mount through some water I noticed my companion disappeared. This caused me to wonder, now that mounts swim, why do companion’s mounts not swim?

    Probably because companions don't swim and are coded to "phase out" whenever you enter the water. Since they're following behind, they'd do that before their mount entered the water. It would be neat to have them stay with you while using a mount in water, but that would likely require some code changes.

    Lore-wise, maybe all the companions are just extremely hydrophobic!

    Even if NPCs used swimming animations, I don't think there's pathfinding support (nodes, navigation mesh, etc) in bodies of water.

    If there was, surely we'd see enemies start traversing water, too, which would need a lot of bug testing throughout all areas of the game to ensure nothing breaks.

    Bastian doesn't swim because Quistley hasn't seen his tattoos yet, and he doesn't want to give him that ammunition.
