No, this section is for non-serious answers. It's just that the Steam logins is one of the more reliable metrics for measuring player populations but people tend to interpret it in unusual ways.

oooh, ok non serious. Steam players never left since it's absolutely the most accurate reliable way to measure and only the smartest bestest players ever use it as metric.

Steam players specifically enjoy good weather more than others. During the summer months, they’re too busy touching grass to touch ESO.

You can ignore previous summers where there seemed to be more Steam players. COVID explains everything.

Performance is good, beaming is fun, balance is good, there are no game breaking bugs, people do not have login and load screen issues every time after maintenance, subclassing was not a divisive update, the game has enough cool and unique rewards outside of the crown store.

There are so many Steam players playing now that the number has simply wrapped around as high as it can go and crossed over the zero threshold again, so that’s why it looks low.

Steam players, like players in general, have left gaming entirely, since gaming industry and culture are going insane.

I see it differently. There are definitely studios in the gaming industry that are taking a different approach. And gamers celebrate that and support them. I recommend to take a look at Swen Vincke's (Larian) speech at the 2024 Game Awards.

In the UK it is going to be more difficult for ZOS to get new players through Steam.

Steam now require a credit card for adult content games (of which ESO is one) due to the online safety act.

Credit Cards aren't used in the same way as in the US; thus 33% of all adults in the UK don't have them because they are not a necessity over here. Debit cards are more popular.

I am not saying this is the only reason Steam numbers have drop but it could be a contributing factor and things may get worse if other countries follow in the UKs footsteps.

When concurrent user numbers are down on Steam, it could also mean players have been acting more casual with logging shorter sessions for writs/dailies/endeavors, or people might have simply had less time to play, especially during the (generally busy) month of September, or there has been less of a commitment to pvp or group content like raids, with those activities often keeping players engaged and logged in for longer.

But for sure it's boaters moving their activities to Epic Games Launcher or only using Discord for chat. Or young people can't/won't afford PCs any longer and are stuck doomscrolling on their phones or taking turns on the family's console... quite the mystery you stumbled on "@moderatelyfatman", maybe diving deeper into the data might shed some clarity on this issue.
