• [IN PROGRESS] PC/Mac: EU megaserver for maintenance – September 9, 22:00 UTC (6:00PM EDT) - September 10, 16:00 UTC (12:00PM EDT)

is there a way to turn off the compass distances?

Just heard there’s a reddit post that tells how to get rid of them:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/1muc2pe/heres_how_to_disable_distances_shown_on_the/

It seems to be just a script command, so I wouldn’t be surprised if an addon pops up in the next three seconds or so.
Thanks, this works great. miniinimini's reddit thread also contains instructions to make an add-on for your own install -- it involves nothing more than creating a folder and two text files, pasting a few lines in there, and renaming the file extensions.

This seems very well put together, but rather thorough for what it does. This reads like an annotated developer version rather than an optimised production version. Does that affect load time or game performance?

If I want to learn how to make add-ons properly, I definitely want VollständigerName's version, but for playing ESO it feels like I should prefer miniinimini's version.

Really!!!!!???? There's no option to disable this useless thing? Why? I don't understand.

I believe there might be one player among thousands who needs this, but it makes no sense to force this absurd GPS on all players who just want to have some fun.

Now we'll all need to wait for someone to tweak the game again, so we can get rid of it. I was so happy about the mounts swimming, but there's always something in every update that's destroying the game. Especially the UI, it just keeps getting worse.

Isn't it taking up server resources to have these numbers constantly calculated and showing up?

I very much would like to disable the numbers. Distracting and unwanted.

Let's hope so. If it takes up too many server resources, it might become urgent to remove this information from the GPS as soon as possible.

I'm sure no one will miss it. I can't even think of any circumstance in this game where anyone needs to know the absolute exact distance we are from a certain point. I really can't.

If it's actually being done on the client side, then no. I'm not saying it's client-side, but I'm thinking that relevant information is already coming from the server so the client can draw the world appropriately, so maybe the client is handling most of this as far as displaying the distances.

I was thinking this! They're spending all that time with v*ng**nc* testing in Cyrodiil but everything including materials gets a measurement on your compass ...

Whatever you may think about the distance markers (I'm not a fan myself), it showing materials on the compass is not a vanilla feature. That is from an addon.

Harvest Map, even if deactivated, will put distances on every node. It's related to simply having the addon installed.

Wow. I hadn't gone looking for the toggle yet, but I was going to. Gotta say, it never even occurred to me that there wouldn't be a toggle for such a cluttery and distracting change.

Strange they didn't put it an option to disable this. One would've thought that would be the obvious thing to do.

Two have been mentioned earlier in this thread: a lightweight one to assemble yourself, Keep Your Distance posted by miniinimini on Reddit, and a complete one with settings from ESOUI or Minion, Hide Compass Distances by VollständigerName.

Just got this update for console today and I HATE the numbers on the compass, they are SO distracting. The first thing I did was look for a toggle and discover there wasn’t one. Why not?! Ugh. Now I must wait for someone to make an add on for console to hide this. Why ZOS, why????

That's my complaint too. I don't want or need the distance meters. The old system was fine and did not need to be redesigned. But the big concern is why add the extra server load? There is a lot of bloat in ESO that could be disabled and performance would be better.

I came here to say this. I hate (it's a strong word but it's a strong feeling) so much of the random added text in the past few updates. I have bad vision in one eye, extra writing makes my vision swim. We keep getting "hunt this red mob while we turn your screen red, hunt purple orbs in a purple room" then adding extra readables in odd places. Both are bad in the opposite way. I also dislike the map having writing added, it's both distracting and unaesthetic. So many small things are adding up for me that just ends with me picking other games to play instead of ESO. I feel like they're killing the flavour of the game in an attempt to modernise or "improve" things that don't need improvement or could have been a toggle. I also think metres should not be used, as it's clearly inaccurate even when used in attack ranges. This isn't to bash the Devs, I just think so much isn't being thought all the way through before it's added or changed.

Toggles ZOS, toggles are nice. Please can we have one for this. Some may find it handy but i do not.
For me this is just visual clutter, I dont like/need nor want it. I have a map and I know how to use it. I can even work out where i am and where i need to be while using it.
If I am in a city and have a quest in a different area I dont need to know the distance to the nearest city gate.
I have also discovered wayshrines and I know how to use them.

While they're at it, could they maybe make the numbers make sense? Because they're so hilariously bad, it beggars belief. According to the system nobody asked for, my character is approximately six meters tall.

Generally I'm against additional visual clutter in the UI, but I happen to really like the new compass distances. Having said that, giving the option to toggle different UI elements on and off is always a good thing. I'd appreciate if that was shared with the dev team as a general guideline for UI changes rather than just as feedback on this one specific item.

Having played with this for a while now, I don't mind it at all. I don't even notice if I am watching the image and only see it when I look up. Of course, a toggle would be good for those who don't like it.

Same here. I really appreciate the change and it is an improvement for me, but I think there definitely should be a toggle for this (a UI setting in one of the categories).
But then that's why there are addons already to "add" this option. So it's nice that this is an issue that seems to be relatively easy to resolve (not speaking on behalf of addon-makers, I don't know from experience and can only assume) and at the same time I (genuinely and non-sarcastically) wonder why there's no such setting in the first place.
I think the compass distances look neat, really stylish and dynamic and make the compass more useful, in general. I also understand why somebody would like to turn them off.

    Edit:
Would like to add: the numbers on the compass bar should not be displayed when the corresponding compass pin type is toggled off.

The whole situation is a repeat of when they added skyshard icons to the compass and map, and again with the crafting stations for Writs. Nice that they added it for those who want that, but without a toggle not nice at all for those who do not, and who have to hope someone writes (and supports indefinitely) an add-on to turn them off again.

It feels like the current development team do not really consider in their decision-making the subset of players who view "exploration" as a major part of the draw of ESO, and RPGs in general.

If I might plug an add-on that has enhanced my experience with the game significantly: True Exploration by Shinni.
Until now you've had some magical atlas with a map for every zone, dungeon and even the daedric planes. Not anymore! With this addon, you have to "draw" your own maps. Each map will start as an empty piece of paper, but as you travel and explore tamriel, your character will draw everything he/she sees.
By these UI-change examples, and a number of other design choices in recent years, I am repeatedly left with the impression that the current development team find the mindset of players that would enjoy such an add-on fundamentally alien.

So much yes to this! I love exploration, I love finding new areas, I love hunting down skyshards based on the clues. I insist on taking non-wayshrine travel for my first visit to a zone and manually discovering each one. I HATE how hard that is to do, because the game wants to basically autoplay for you, much like this spooky prediction of the future:

This is a fantastic idea, though I find it hard to use, because so often I find myself trying to weave my way through a map without "discovering" it yet, because my character hasn't made it there yet. I'm only there because of some forced thing that ZOS is pushing, like an event.

It would be great if you could allow those of us who are so distracted by this to be able turn it off. I don’t think I have seen a single post anywhere of anyone asking for this so I am not sure why we have it. I scratch my head and think of so many things that we have asked for year after year that have not been acknowledged yet. To echo others here, if you are going to add something like this in the future please make it optional. Not trying to sound rude but just frustrated. This and the HDR saturation are making it hard to play right now.

On another note, thanks so much for giving us an option to turn off that sustainability feature on PS today. That made me so happy. I actually have 60 fps now all the time, what a great improvement.

I'm pretty sure these numbers correlate to skill distance. Take Wall of Elements or Combat Prayer as examples. They're supposedly 8m wide but their width equates to about 2 character heights (I like mine as small as possible) so like 4m high for the smallest Breton right?
