A second "companion" or "Mercenary"??

Over the past few days I've seen folks with two companions. I'm used to donkeys or some such following folks around, but my understanding is that you can have a companion, or a donkey, but not both. But this is a "human looking" npc.
Did I miss something? This second NPC following the player was called Mercenary. The player would not or could not answer my question.

Heren✭✭✭✭When there is a quest with a PNJ accompanying you, the PNJ has a unique name - their name - for you, but for others it has a generic name, like 'Mercenary'. And vice versa.0 -

✭✭✭Typically, a generic NPC called "Mercenary" or the like is a temporary NPC who aids you during some story content. If you were to do the same quest in that area, your version of "Mercenary" would have a proper name and identity, as they're important to that particular quest.PC/NA — Lone Werewolf, the EP Templar Werewolf
