A proposal for a better MMR system, written by ShoddyMagician (a friend who isn't on the forums) and supported by many veteran BG mains across multiple BG guilds.
The recent update for battlegrounds was a great improvement, but the MMR system for 4v4 matches could benefit from the following changes to make it more engaging and visually appealing, along with some quality-of-life improvements:
MMR Adjustments Based on Wins and Losses: MMR should increase with wins and decrease with losses, ensuring that players’ rankings accurately reflect their performance over time. (This may already be planned.)
Rewards System Independent of MMR: Rewards should be based on medals earned during gameplay, which accumulate towards wins. This encourages players to focus on personal achievements and success in matches without being penalized for losses. It keeps the emphasis on improving performance while fostering a healthy competitive atmosphere.
Visible Ranking System: Introduce a clear ranking system (for example, Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum), with 3-4 distinct ranks. Each rank should have subsections represented visually, such as a progress bar with 2 notches dividing the bar into 3 sections. This will give players a clear sense of progression.
Balanced Matchmaking: Players should be matched against others within a few subsections (notches) above or below their current rank, with a higher likelihood of being matched within the same subsection. This ensures competitive and fair matches. MMR decay can be implemented to ensure matchmaking still occurs if wait times are too long.
MMR Gain/Loss Balance: Beating higher-ranked teams should yield more MMR, while losing to them should penalize less. Conversely, defeating lower-ranked teams should reward less MMR, and losing to them should result in greater MMR loss.
Additional Notes:
-I am aware that the medals are currently imbalanced but I did want to stay focused on topic so we can discuss the layout of the idea itself. As far as rewards, this I assume works similar to how AP does towards your Cyrodiil rewards per campaign, and per character.
-This ranking system would mostly be a visual representation of how the MMR system already works and splits up players based on their current MMR and would have little or no negative effect on matchmaking.
