Are the XP gains in this game are fundamentally broken?

People are ignoring the quests and grinding on monsters for just about the same XP gains as they would be getting for doing a quest. And don't bother mentioning "quest rewards" as you would out level them any way regardless.

    Let them be, I don't see the problem... I wanna experience the quests and the lore, not reach lvl 50 in a week and complain "Mama dis game ain't got much content!"

    I also think let players play how they want to. This is first an MMO and secondly an elder scrolls game. You're going to get all types of players and that's just a bit of the interesting diversity an mmo offers :)

    Too bad we can't level up via AvA. That would of been a welcome change.

    I always found myself under levelled by about 2 levels, even after doing all the quests in the area, so grinding was my only option if I wanted to be the correct level for the next zone. Currently I am veteran rank 1.

    The day when a game producer will have the courage to remove every source of grinding in a game, this day will be a great day for the MMO genre.

    Quests are grinding.
    do{
    Press 'E'. Tab through the text.
    Press 'goodbye'.
    do until(end){
    Run to the shield thingy.
    Kill/ collect whatever.
    Look for the next shield.
    {
    Run to the 'end guy'
    Talk to the 'end guy'.
    Collect the reward.
    }while (lvl <50)

    It's so simple a bot could do it. :lol:

    Nope.

    There are spots for grinding which can level you for about X20 times the speed you would have leveled with fast lore-less questing. I would say that this is a little broken.

    Instead of nerfing monster exp again though, they should introduce a kind of diminishing returns that will affect only these grinders.

    Agreed. Unfortunately this is what questing has been reduced to in the ever dumbing down of games in general.

    If people feel that quests are grinding, then either the quests are too simple and not interesting, or those people should consider playing something else than an MMORPG.

    Of all TESO's possible problems, there is nothing wrong with that.

    EXP camping is a perfectly valid tactic and is not at all any less difficult than questing.

    Or you can just mind yours and let people who want to level another way do so. Grinding mobs is a common and age-old tradition in MMOs, and some of us rather like having the option.

    Sure, but then every way leading to level V10 should require the same effort and time, which is actually not the case ;)

    Its a pretty delicate balancing act. You nerf one too hard, the other becomes the only option, same for buffing either one. Fact is though that one is more "entertaining" while the other is just repetitive actions, and the act of grinding is only as efficient as the people performing the act make it. It requires more effort and you basically have to do it well to make it worth doing at all.

    I am in favor of having the option too. But at the moment it is ridiculously benefiting and in the right spawns you don't need to make an effort to make it worth your while. A friend for example got 9 levels 40 to 49 in ~4 hours. It is too easy and way too fast.

    And he missed a ton of skill points and skyshards in the way.
    Currently while grinding is fast you miss out quest reward skillpoints and there are about 5-8 of those in every area. If you include the 16 skyshards as well, it's a lot.

    Also, after vet1 they can't level via grinding anymore, mobs give too little xp for that.

    Some words is missing in the thread's name, like "GAMEBREAKING", "TOTALLY OP", "UNACCEPTABLE" and "PLEASEDEVSFIXITORI'LLCANCELMYSUB".
    I'm sure that Zenimax's employees won't read it without such words.

    Which really makes me wonder how folks supposedly reached veteran 10 within a couple days of early access.

    I think that the diminishing returns idea is something they could implement, or you don't get xp for killing a unique mob more than one time. There'd be a lot of griping about that though, since most of those unique mobs that folks farm drop soul gems, and that's the real reason people farm them.

    One of the first guys (though not the very first one, think he ended up being nr 2 or 3) streamed his entire journey to VR10, so it should be quite easy to find out :p

    Anyways, I really hope they leave the possibility of farming in place, it's much more fun, especially with a friend, than doing every little quest and like people like to point out, you miss out on skillpoints anyways - So it's not all that positive.

    He can do these being VR10 (with only the main quest at 50) with zero effort and as fast as he leveled.

    It's currently about 10 times faster to level up through different bashing techniques than through questing. There's a huge room for some adjustment actually ;)

    I never understood why people make jobs out of games... why not find a job?

    If you are playing an ES game and skipping everything in the way of lore/places/quests etc.... This begets the question of why play it at all? You may find an ARPG like PoE, D3, TLII are more to your liking. Lots of killing, no reading required.

    It's called play how you want when you want. Just because something isn't fun for you doesn't mean it isn't fun for someone else. THat's what being human is about. If I choose to sit and grind mobs all day that's my perogitive, not yours. Same as if you choose to quest all day, that's your choice not mine.

    The problem isn't that grinding is a viable option, the problem is that grinding is a significantly superior option for leveling, and yes that is a problem. As mentioned below

    This.

    It's one thing to have grinding be at the same level of efficiency leveling-wise as questing, or even for it to be slightly better ... but grinding is significantly superior to questing. That needs to be addressed, I agree.
