newbie question about researches

Hi there !

So I have a question about research. What is the use of doing multiple researches for one Trait ? The first takes 6 hours, the second 24, ...
Does it increase the quality of the trait, no regard to the item's trait itself ?

Each item has 8 possible traits. The first trait you train on an item is 6 hours and then you never have to research that trait on that item again. Where it doubles is when you elect to research the second of the 8 total traits for that item.

Thanks, I know about the duration. To precise the question, do the 8 traits research need better items/traits as base ? Or can I research the 8 traits with the same level 12 item for exemple ? And then, will it be equal to the level 50 traits or will it be a 8 grade level 12 trait ?

Any items that has the trait can be researched to learn the trait regardless of level.

If you have a level 26 Mace with Defending on it and have a level 2 mace with Defending on it, I would research the L2 Mace and deconstruct the L26.

No. Once you research a trait for a particular piece of armour or weaponry it can be applied to every piece of that armour or weaponry you craft. You don't need to research it again. Unless it's on an alt. I think material and level increase the effectiveness of the trait. Or maybe quality. I've not looked into that as hard as I might.

A trait is a trait regardless of item level.

A precise iron dagger is the same research as a precise dwarven dagger.

(Research using the first, deconstruct the second).

You'll be able to make precise ebony daggers either way.

Just to clarify, once you research ONE trait (say, Sharpened) on ONE item (a Sharpened Dagger) then that item is destroyed and you can afterward apply the Sharpened Trait to any Dagger you create, using any material.

The reason you would want to research ~other~ DIFFERENT Traits for the same item (say, Defending on a Dagger) would be (a) to be able to apply that newly learned trait to any future items you make of that type (Defending Daggers in this case).... and (b) some Crafted SET items require you to know multiple traits to even create the base item.

That is, you might have to know two traits for a dagger (ANY two traits) in order to create a Set version of that dagger. You don't have to USE any of those traits, you just have to KNOW them. If you only know one trait for Two Hand Axe, for example, you could not create a Crafted Set version of a Two Hand Axe.

Some of the more advanced / powerful Crafted Set items require you to know more than one trait --- I even heard one Crafted Set requires you to know ~ALL EIGHT~ Traits for a given item in order to craft a Crafted-Set version of it.

And just to put that in perspective, your research time doubles every time you hit a new trait. So you're looking at well over a week of research time for just the 8th trait, even with the skill to lower the time.

What's the purpose of doing eight researches (a total of >63 days) for one trait ? For example, the Impenetrable trait, for armors. Will the first research unlock a 60% increase, and the eighth research unlock a 130% ? Does the quality of the item used for research have an impact of the trait unlocked (i.e. level 12 50% impenetrable vs a level 50 120% impenetrable, random values) ?

What is the difference between the first time I research the Impenetrable trait (6 hours) and the last ?

My bad, I misunderstood the research concept : I thought one could do 8 research for one trait (impenetrable), and that each research would improve the trait's quality.

Instead, I should have known that the first research -any research for one type of gear- will take 6 hours, and once the trait is learned, each research for the next trait will take twice the time. And that there is not 8 grade for one trait, but 8 traits for one item.

    Clouded my mind was.

    Thanks to everyone, though.
