Yeah! Today's my birthday, don't they realize how rude it is to have maintenance on this, my special day?! I'm a paying customer after all! Unbelievable how this company is run! I wouldn't have subscribed to esoplus if I knew this would happen!

So its you! You know all the answers. I've been looking for you for a long time. Fly in to help them right now. Unless you live in Antarctica you could probably get there in less than 8 hours, fix the problem and have time for tea and strumpets.

would have to be a lot closer than that

It's stunning how people can defend 8 hour maintenance periods. Even for a patch that's an absurd amount of time. Though, unlike the OP, I didn't return to ESO with higher expectations. They lured me back with the promise of the Necromancer, soonᵗᵐ.

Also past experience has taught me to not have any expectations that things got fixed any better. So will probably still have these ridiculous load screens. People who complained about Anthem load screens would be apoplectic in this game, lol.

Well, they did get better. Last year I spent at least 3 days (maybe even up to 5 days) during Anniversary with EU server down due to DoS and (unexpected )maintenance

Do we know what this patch is for? It could be a back end patch for the expansion coming up perhaps? It could be to fix a list of bugs? or some hardware issues on their side? I haven't seen any patch notes yet, but 8 hours does seem out of the ordinary, so I would not take this as usual. I am pretty sure that even WoW has an 8 hour patch once in a while…. I have played quite a few MMO's in my time and they all occasionally REALLY LONG downtimes.

Let's see what this brings before we complain about it. Take the time to do anything that you may have to take care of so that you can play once it is up again. It will be worth it :)

And what your trying to say is that you wished that you had purchased it after the maintenance if you had known about it right?

I downloaded the whole game again took 4 hours and then went to log on and there was maintenance.

Then follow that up immediately with saying nothing has changed or improved, i.e. you couldn't possibly have been surprised by the 8 hour maintenance.

Zenimax has massively improved on maintenance times. It used to be 6 to 8 hours regularly every single week. Nowadays regular maintenance is 2-4 hours and some weeks are skipped. You just happened to be unlucky that on the first day you get back ZoS is doing a really big maintenance to hopefully fix some of the dungeon finder issues.

Sorry but this is simply ridiculous. I've seen quite a few people that took a break or stopped playing but maintain active on the forums and haven't necessarily "lost interest". They put the info out there. It's up to you to get it.

Maintenance isn't a new thing and I've known it go long past 8 hours.

It is irritating if it falls during your hours of play and it does seem like a long time, but it happens just about every single week so if you've just come back, get used to it.

No matter what platform you're on, it happens.

I guess you can give them credit for several hours of weekly maintenance. Trying at least to keep the game playable for us.

its almost funny to see how people try to turn Zenimax lack of good IT management into "effort",
    almost..

It's also amusing to see people who cannot understand the simple logic of technical upkeep. Maintenance, the clue is in the title.

It's ridiculous, I agree that they can't by now do these things quicker and simpler, or haven't invented some sort of back-up server we can play on while they tinker, alas, it is what it is and it's been happening long enough that I simply accept it.

I was aware there were long maintenance before, can see in my forum history that this isnt the first time i complain about this, but i expected ZoS would v been capable of fixing this at some point, shame to see that nothing much changed.

Maybe they should put less effort in creating useless content:outifts, furniture etc..
And more effort in more important things.

For the last 3 years you have joined this game, you always make threads about maintenance crying on the forums.

And I am sure you have not played "lots of MMO's for 2 decades", otherwise you could have been 40+ year old like myself. So you could have been mature enough not to make such posts, and also having built a pretty big tolerance over the years, especially between 1997-2010ish. When many MMOs went down for days on maintenance and patching or server issues due to a patch. UO, AC, DAOC, EVE, T4C, SB, DF, EnB to name a few. Except if by "lots" you mean WoW and possibly SWTOR. :D

Buddy, i never mentioned that i dont understand the need for a maintenance,
i only point out the fact that Zenmiax maintenance is much to long.
And this isnt a rare thing..

In your expert opinion, how long should patch maintenance be?

3 hours for a normal weekly maint and about 4/5 hours in extreme case (when new content, events)

There wasn't a maintenance last week, the last scheduled maintenance was on 03/25 for PC (which was just over 3 hours fyi). and 03/27 for console (was 2 hours).

So ZoS went two week without maintenance which means this 8 hour maintenance averages out at 4h/week.

Feel for you man, thats more tough after having the game downloaded again for couple of hours and then have this (ridicolous long) maintenance waiting for you.

And yes indeed thats why i am anoyed about this a bit, that i bought eso plus yesterday cause i am having a couple of days of from work, and didnt realise the "almost middle of the week and middle of day"(at least for my timezone) maintenance schedule ZoS handles.
If it was a normal 3-4 hour maintenance i wouldnt even come to complain about it (again) here.

Its not the worst thing, life goes one, enjoying a cold beer in the sun meanwhile.
But imo its sure worth complaining about as i am free to do so.
