It does time out but takes less than 5 minutes for it to do so. I've tested it myself.
I do however think they should reduce the timer to 60 seconds from opening it. If you are wondering chests are under the same time down as group dungeon chests as well. For those wondering yes I do not have auto loot on and yes I do take everything from chests. If it is nodes I generally take everything, well except for clockwork city for those crafting dailies... take everything except quest item. You would be surprised at how quick the refresh for those things are.

That may be true for treasure chests you find in dungeons, delves, trials, dolemens, as well as treasure-map chests, but I know it is NOT true for regular old treasure chests that spawn topside (unless ZOS changed how they coded top-side treasure chests within the last 60 days).

I do not care what people leave in chests. I was not always a subscriber and understand sometimes they need to make a choice of what to take because their inventory is limited. When I find an already opened chest I just pick all and move along to another one. Prefer to not wasting day on thinking what to do with an obvious stuff :).

Limited inventory is no excuse for failing to delete unwanted items ... they can be deleted while you are standing right there at the treasure chest.

That is really strange, because when I farm (been farming in Hews Bane since it went live), treasure chests with junk items left in them sit there, and sit there, and sit there, and sit there. Maybe ZOS did recode topside chests. I'll check it out.

Something really needs to be done about this toxic way of playing the game leaving trash for other people wasting everyone's time I suggest that you can't loot another chest unless you previously loot everything to make the chest despawn, or till it despawns on its own.

ZOS probably could stand to shorten the despawn time considerably. There is no reason for any opened resource to stay around for more than a minute or two. This would at least reduce the amount of times someone comes across these.

However, I am really against any sort of penalties or player requirements related to taking stuff out of chests and resource nodes. To me, that is worse than someone leaving the stuff behind.

Leaving stuff behind is not a crime, nor should it be.

I've tested it with the chests that spawn right outside of exorcised coven cottage. Picked one item out of it and literally waited by it. Good ol' trusty clock right next to me as well. I even checked when I saw this thing to make sure if I was remembering how long it took to reset. But as for the no excuse thing that does seem to be a bit extreme... you can't possibly know their inventory or what they have but I feel like majority are people that don't have the merchant. Talked to some that do it and that is a common response from them. I tend to not care too much and take stuff and rather prefer they take everything if they can and destroy what they don't want.

It does suck coming up on a chest partial and it's rude.

Some people are just trolls but there are a lot of new people who really may not know that by not looting everything the chest will just sit.

Also some that play this game are kids and don't care. They will grow up one day.

Also it is JUST A GAME!!

Suggestions and reasonable ideas is something that ZOS can work with.

    Spot on.

Some collect everything, some don't craft, don't have time for all that and just take what they need.

My comment was more in jest, than anything else.

On a more serious note, when I am looking to get rid of garbage, it is usually because I have to clean out some chest or resource node. Thankfully, I can leave dead bodies around with loot in them. There isn't a lot of time to pawn my stuff off on a guild mate. If I knew I was going to be out of inventory before I opened the container, I would not have opened the container, so time is ticking.

Basically, I quickly delete stuff of lesser value, then re-open the container and take what is in there. I make use of the "Mark as Junk" option so it is easy to find junk to delete. There are times, mainly with newer characters on my alt account (no ESO Plus) that don't have a lot of bag space, and where there is nothing of lesser value to toss. In those cases, the chest will despawn when the timer expires, or some other player will come along and take the stuff.

Honestly I don’t think about it but I do have the merchant so I can sell stuff easy. But I don’t think it is a big of deal as this post is making it. They came to the chest first did what they wanted to with it and left, When I run into that I pick up stuff and try and work my way in front of whoever is doing it to get to the chests before them. Sometimes it’s easy sometimes I can’t and I go and do something else, knowing chests will be there later. If it is frustrating make the gold and buy whatever your looking for from a trader or come back later. Telling someone over the internet to stop doing something on a multiplayer game usually just encourages them to do it more for better or worse. There are many things I would prefer ZOS focusing on first before this even crosses their mind

I'll tell you what. You convince ZoS to give me a bottomless bag for junk from chests and I'll pick them all clean. Until then, no, I don't feel like wasting time picking through 200 items just to delete/vendor then countless garbage found in most chests. The comments in this thread are ridiculous... Loot penalties, no chest to spawn until the one you didn't fully loot despawns, etc. You guys are ridiculous. The chests respawn on a timer; fully looted or not.

I suppose it's a tactic. You discourage your competitors from doing chest runs. Worked on me. I don't do chest runs anymore, and I suppose soon will stop doing resource node runs too for the same reason

It would be a stupid tactic by someone not very intelligent, because they themselves would see less nodes.

    No Excuses!
    Step 1:
Take the item(s) out of the chest that you want to keep
    Step 2:
Take as many of the junk items as you can into your inventory and destroy them .. keep doing this until the chest is empty.
There are various spawn points on the map where a treasure chest will appear (per geographical area). Only so many chests can spawn-in at a time (within that area). When one treasure chest de-spawns, another one will appear on a different spawn point. The longer a partially emptied treasure chest sits there, the longer it takes for the replacement chest to spawn in.
I realize that the 2-step process I outlined above may be very difficult for some players. Unfortunately, there aren't any CP nodes that will help and I didn't see anything in the crown store that would be helpful either (despite the fact that it's extremely difficult for some players to level up this ability).

That being said, it would be nice if ZOS gave us a quality of life improvement that allowed players to right-click on an item while it was still in the treasure chest in order to choose 'delete' (saving us from having to take the item(s) into our inventory before deleting).

I don't think deletion should be allowed without actually owning the item. But being able to clear inventory while it is open would be nice.

I like the idea of a shorter period for keeping the chest open, but have the shorter period stop when anything from the node is taken, not from a chest unlock, for example. The assumption would be that what gets left behind is what people have little interest in.

Of course, making inventory management suck less would also help with this.

Personally when I find I am hitting enough pre-picked chests I turn around and go the opposite way or to another part of the map.
As clearly you were just a bit behind the same route as that person.

This issue will never be fixed as long as chests are not instanced and instanced chests are not a great idea. They could in theory lower to despawn timer but then that's penalising players who get caught by a respawning mod, don't have enough inventory space and need to manage for a bit etc.

Other option is make chests check for players within X range, after being picked and if there are none it despawns after 10 seconds.

However end of the day if the person was taking all the items you're still having the same effect, you were following someone else on a route and would have just found no chests at all.

And this can be countered by Human A is playing the game they the way they want, and not how Human B, C, D or E wants them to play the game.

Nobody has any right to dictate to any other person how they should play the game just because they don't like it.

I have no inventory space...my bank is full... I don't want to spend 40K on more.

If I pick up that pointless piece of equipment in this chest I'll have to stop my adventuring and go back to town to sell/decon/bank all this trash... this is particularly bad in VVaadenfel where Vivec is the only place with a bank and crafting tables

... or I can just leave the trash in this chest and continue with my adventure.

Humans like you are what makes playing with other humans horrible sometimes.

That's true. If someone wants to be a selfish, inconsiderate arse and ZMax has no rule against it, they certainly can. I find it interesting that some people are so thoughtless but hey, they want what they want and who cares about anyone else wants...or in this case, don't want what there is.

    Edit: Missing word.

This is getting worse. Especially in Vvardenfell.

4 consecutive chests with trash just the other day.
