Does blocking generate ultimate? If yes how much and is there a cooldown?

This is what i found for dealing dmg (from: http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/ultimate-gain-from-damage-demystified/):

“any” critical hit/heal/dot tick (no matter what dmg/heal amount) = 1 Ultimate
“any” damage/heal greater than 1% and lower than 5% of target’s max. HP = 1 Ultimate
“any” additional 4% of damage dealt, after the first 1% = 1 additional Ultimate
“any” additional 6% of healing done, after the first 1% = 1 additional Ultimate
Ultimate skills, can not generate Ultimate points, not even with critical hits

I think that is a rather old knowledge base, because now Ulti is only gained by light/ heavy attacks, or isnt it? But does the above arithmetic maybe apply to blocking? And is there a cooldown?

    From the old patch notes

•Adjusted how Ultimate generation is gained to make it more even across different classes and builds: •When you damage an enemy with a light or heavy attack, you will receive a buff that grants three Ultimate per second for eight seconds. •This buff is refreshed with each light or heavy attack.

•If you heal an ally that has the Ultimate gain buff, you will also receive the Ultimate gain buff for eight seconds. •This only works if the ally being healed was not at full health prior to the heal.

•Abilities that previously gave Ultimate will now provide the Minor Heroism buff that will give you additional Ultimate over time.
•Ultimate can also be gained from blocking, dodging, or attacking targets with a damage shield.

Looks like blocking and dodging count towards ult regen as well.

Found this on another thread. Is this 3/sec for 8 sec maybe also applying to block?

ok tested it in game now. its as described 3 ultimate per sec for 8 sec for blocking exactly like light attack. No cooldown, if you get consecutively hit, you keep building ultimate. For dealing dmg light or heavy attack doesnt matter its always 3/sec. Simply taking dmg without blocking does not generate ultimate (unless you wear special gear for that eg bloodspawn or werewolf hide). Awesome thing is, when you block a zerg in cyro you build ulti crazy fast and can then cast ulti permablocking and sometimes survive when few party members can get to you to heal (and healing yourself of course while permablocking).

3 ult per second for 9 seconds.

Same as light and heavy attacks. The 3 basic mechanics of the game all generate the same amount of ultimate.

That Tamreil foundry thread is from 3 years. The game was completely different then :(.

Another form poster said this in that thread you linked
"When you do a light attack (or heavy attack whatever) you will gain X ultimate over 8 seconds. So for the 8 seconds you have the "gain ultimate buff" let's say.

If you heal someone who has that "gain ultimate buff" you gain ultimate. Pretty much this way a healer who is JUST healing still gains ultimate.

So yeah, ignoring sets etc. you need to do basic attacks to gain ultimate, or heal someone who is doing that. "

Basically you start generating ultimate on light attacks. If someone heals you with this buff on, they will generate ultimate too.

Certain sets+ abilities will grant you extra ultimate. For example Templars can generate a couple of points from using any Dawn's Wraith ability. Each set/ability will tell you exactly how many points and if it has a cooldown.

In short blocking an attack has the same effect as if you did a light or heavy attack or heal someone that has done a light or heavy attack within the last 8 seconds. Those 3 are the only way to get the base ultimate generation of 3 ultimate per second for 8 seconds.

Great, thx for the answer and knowledge, wasnt sure bout that, during testing, but had the feeling could be 9 sec. Thx for confirmation. How do you know that?

no, they're the same invisible buff. They do refresh themselves and tick instantly on the first tick though. Blocking an attack does not generate ultimate if it doesn't drain your stamina as best as my tests could tell. I tested at morrowind launch(that's when the block changes came, right?) by recording a video of me blocking and slowing it down, I never noticed ANY ultimate gain ticks that occurred outside of the expected .25 second intervals when my stamina was drained. Its not perfect and I might have missed a tick, but its close enough that I'm confident and since this buff is invisible I can't see any more reliable way to test.
