I honestly think crafting needs a huge overhaul. The sets you can craft pale in comparison to the ones you can get in drops.
I hate how people think they're the bees knees because they can do 9 traits. You just press a button and wait a few days. I don't understand how everyone isn't to be fair.

I agree with you, I like being self sufficient, however I know a lot of PvPers and casuals that just don't have the drive to do it. For those that invest the time and money (nirn weapons and motifs) it is reasonable to want to make money back with it. Also, this is such a basic part of literally every MMO since UO I don't know why this is such a lacking area in ESO

The patch doesn't hurt you as a crafter, though. Only benefits.

It takes 6h with no passives to research a trait on a piece of gear, 4 days for the first 4. And you can be offline. On average that's the amount of traits that are viable on a given item. People farmed content for far longer. Now they complain that the fresh bread ain't smeared with butter, after being fed stale one for 3+ years.
What are people who clamour for monetization actually want to do with all that gold? Buy all the houses so you have even more useless spots? Sit on it? Found the Tamriel Salvation Army? I don't know. I just know I won't ever pay the prices people want for something so simple.

Why what happens to the item being researched, destroyed, so it would only be keeping in line that if you try to remove an unresearched trait you would destroy the equipment
