Crowns. My job and RL responsibilities don't allow me enough time to amass massive amounts of gold. I sub and buy crowns on sale. Anything I would spend crowns on are locked in the Crown Crates, which I refuse to participate in, so I currently have 29k crowns collecting dust. I'm looking at one of the large (6kish), unfurnished residences to enjoy. Other than that, I'll slowly accumulate belongings for the inside. I may go furnished, but leaning towards earning the inside stuff as I go.

I make money IRL easier than I do in game, crowns are likely going to be used for the big purchases and saving in-game gold for continuing to buy motifs/crafting mats/achievement furnishings. But there will be some smaller homes I buy with in-game gold as well.

Now, I don't make millions, but in order for me to enjoy the lifestyle I have and like, I have to spend more time working than playing ESO. It's much easier for me to throw some money into the crown store to buy fluff than to spend gold on fluff.

Supposing I have 7 mil in game, buying the house that I did would have been a big blow to that amassed wealth and I wouldn't like it.

On the other hand, I had 10k crowns total sitting around from some that I had bought previously and then a 9k crowns injection for my 6mos ESO+ membership that I was going to get regardless of housing or not, so adding some more crowns to that made getting 15k for the Furnished Ebonheart Chateau quick and easy, and didn't hurt my wealth in game as much (+ more gold now to spend on achievement furnishings)

if we pay with ingame Gold, then we cannot upgrade to "furnished"

A mix of both. Bought an empty house for crowns, but having seen the furniture prices, I absolutely totally will NOT be paying crowns for those. They're completely crazytown.

Definitely gold. I don't see the point in spending crowns. The house maybe. But furnishing is the funnest part. Finding, buying, trading patterns. Crafting your own furniture. Really makes your house feel more special. I currently have a table, a bed, and a desk. Work in progress

I am waiting a bit before I take the plunge only because I still have yet to see ZOS implement anything right the first time...this is no exception.

Guild chipped in and we bought a manor with gold. If a good crown sale drops soon, I may pick up a personal house with crowns.

A fully furnished Ebonheart Chateau is 15,000 Crowns aka $125 (with tax). I previewed the furnished version and it's not even that great.

Forgive me if I am wrong here, but why does everyone assume people are buying crowns to get these? I'm sure there are some, but I would bet there are far more like myself that have just accumulated crowns from our subs and sales.

I haven't had anything lately to spend crowns on so why not use them now? I mean if everyone on the forums is correct I better use them before the game goes under.

No where near as long

Moral of the story. Time > Money

Neither. There is not storage. No need for a house.

Used gold for my house, I did use crowns to get the target skeleton though.
