It doesn't really feel like an MMO on PS4

Just started playing few days ago but it doesn't feel like an MMO to me. More of a single player game for several reasons. I leveled several different classes through the starter zones and seen a lot of people running around playing. Problem is that no one talks to anyone else. I have a mic and tried speaking to people but no one chats. Also the lack of am in game chat box really makes it feel like I'm not in an MMO.

Does it get better at higher levels? Do people communicate with each other at all? Even these forums don't feel right, lol. How come we don't have class specific forums where we can chat about our individual classes? What about a trading forum where you can sell stuff you find in game?

I guess I was a bit spoiled coming from WoW and The Old Republic :(

I have only heard 2 people through my headset out of 3 days of playing. One was the sounds of someone clanking a plate and eating, I kid you not. While he/she was eating someone was hollering at them in the background to clean up their room and get off the couch.

Another time I heard 2 people talking about a quest but as soon as I approached they logged out.

Voice Chat is not something people tend to use freely for various reasons. Text Chat is coming with the Shadow of the Hist DLC though so hang in there!

Join a guild. Most people playing on PS4 voice chat in guilds or party chat with friends. If you go to your capital city in the Stormhaven, Mournhold and Grahtwood zones you will usually find people talking. Even the first zones after the starter areas can be noisy with people in the main cities depending on the time of day.

Well your first impression is right about the game, it's mostly a single player game designed with multiplayer functions. A dream for many modern Elder Scroll fans but this doesn't please everyone.

About socializing, a future update is planned to bring text chat to consoles, which will help a lot in that way.

It's a bit easier to find people to chat with when you join active guilds. The trading system works just fine in ESO, and the Guild Store is arguably the best to navigate through on Gamepad UI (which is what you use as you're a console player). I'd honestly prefer it to stay as it is because I think it would be too clunky and questionable to have it done on forums like these.

In Update 11, we are getting text chat for those of us using the gamepad or on console! (Hallelujah!)

My thoughts are your choice of platform is affecting the game's experience for you. The most active player base you will find is on PC/Mac megaservers and that's not me being cynical either. As it is where the game originated, you will always find people like myself in Zone chat helping newbies and other players out, too, as we've been playing the game since beta. You can't really do that on console atm.

Even then, text-based chat on consoles pales in comparison. The main reason I want to use it on PC is because I have a keyboard that will (hopefully) work alongside it as well, and I'm tired of my Chat Window continually popping up on the screen each time I exit a menu (which doesn't happen on normal keyboard/mouse UI and is my only caveat about using the Gamepad UI on PC, but I digress).

I would say my best recommendation for you would be to continue questing and getting into your alliance's main zones, where you are sure to find more people playing alongside you. It definitely gets better the higher level you get to because you'll generally find most people who do talk more often in places such as Cyrodiil, Trials, Veteran Dungeons, etc., where coordination and cooperation is key to victory. :)

Edit: Or...you know...the people that also forget their mic is on and are eating/drinking while their mother is yelling at them to get off the game across the room. :D
