i was about to come here and complain that magplars are underpowered, but then i noticed two really good templars doing way better then i expected, using a different build than mine.......
as much as i expect most of the comments here will be "l2p" it would be nice if any templar here could link me a good pvp build of theirs

My build is made for mostly healing but I can outlast and out heal a good number of other players.

I'm running five piece Magnus heavy

    Two piece seducer

Two Cyrodiil's Light ring and a Necklace of Willpower

I have S&B for my Primary Bar both Willpower (I get extra magicka recovery with my shield)

My second is two Willpower swords to increase my spell damage

so what skills are on your bars?
  • Seabhacgra
I'd like to hear from other magicka templars myself as i wrestle with my build to be competative as well. I have had a hard time surviving and my build is slowly getting better. One of my problems is that people talk about using heavy armor, but that seruously gimps my magicka regen and boosts from the light armor passives. I'm researching ways to overcome the NB op players in ic and others and would love to hear about how other templars that focus on magicka are accomplishing this.

I think the answer is usually 500+ champion points....

only way to get around the light armor passives.

so what skills are on your bars?

first bar: blazing spear, total dark, BoL, elusive mist, channeled focus, and playing with the bat swarm morphs atm
second bar: radiant oppression, puncturing sweep, reflective light, toppling charge, structured entropy, and dawnbreaker of smiting

im close to getting prox det, which im probably going to add to my build somewhere.... oh, and im going to replace my first bar (is resto staff atm)'s weapon to one handed and replace blazing shield with reverberating (not sure if i spelled it right) bash.... and maybe even a purify, but i first need to fit prox in

I enjoy my setup, and still play around with a couple of abilities on my back bar... SW/B bar is pretty much set in stone though, I used to run mist on it but recently made a swap for repentance to have the extra regen.

    SW/B
    Bats
    Toppling Charge
    Puncturing
    Radiant
    Repentance
    Total Dark

    Resto/Destro
    Dawnbreaker/Barrier
    Entropy
    Proxy
    BoL
    Elusive Mist
    Cleanse/Purify

Basically open by arming prox, entropy, hit with Total Dark (if possible), then go into the combo of Toppling and Punctures. Execute when they're wore down. If you are overwhelmed you'll have to mist out and try to find some sort of cover and self heal, and hope you ulti's are coming up, rinse, repeat.

If timed right you do, proxy will give you some additional burst that helps. If you don't have proxy or lack the burst then you could use Dark Flare as an opener for the defile. I try to stay away from Stamina attacks as a magicka character. But to be honest, I've just never thought of Reverberating Bash, that may be a great move.

Your bars are fine. Though I would replace reflective light with purifying ritual.

Doing well in Cyrodiil is mostly about experience and developing a 6th sense to instantly reacting to what you come across. Having a lot of champion points and not trying to play a magicka DK facilitates this. If you are close to getting prox det and have a good bar, I don't think the issue is L2P; I suspect you are doing fine and just want to do a little better.

I don't think you should mess around with reverberating bash as a magicka build because you need stamina to break free of CCs.

Magicka templars are a very strong play right now. They still have wonky mechanics and things about them that are incredibly frustrating like eclipse only working on a single target, but ZoS gave the best healing class the capability of good DPS and that marriage is very potent if you conform your build to accentuate this synergy. Light armor, stack spell damage, heal yourself through trouble, knowing when to jesus beam make you a versatile and dangerous opponent. Your main vulnerabilty is high burst builds that can CC you since you rely on healing to keep yourself alive. Do *not* run out of stamina.

Edit: I know some swear by heavy armor and that absolutely could work. It's just a different play-style. The key is you want to ensure that how you play best matches the gear you use and the skills you slot.

    Soul Shriven
    Sword/shield.

Total dark, toppling charge, puncturing sweeps, entropy and purifying. Dawnbreaker.

    Resto staff.

Healing Ward, unstoppable, purifying, entropy and breathe of life. Healing super can't remember name.

Mainly heal using my Resto bar in groups, but the other bar and shields means that I can hold my own 1vs1 - 1vs2. Very much a work in process. A friend is due to make me a vamp soon and I'm currently switching out my pve healing gear for more spell damage dps gear.

I play on playstation which is difficult to switch bars sometimes with lag, so I've double up on skills on both bars which isn't really best practice, need a finisher really for 1vs1 and will need to swap out some stuff for vamp skills. Probably end up with something like Sneaks main bar. We will see.

I can hold my own in IC, and healing gets me lots of AP. It's decent, needs improvement in both gear and skills, but decent none the less.

I should add, that's my IC loadout. In open world Cyrodiil I usually have some sort of knockback (Javelin/Destructive Reach) as it's just too much fun to use on top of keeps and the Alessia bridge.

i actually used to use dark flare for a while, but then switched it for reflective light since i barely had any chance of casting dark flare mid-fight......

i would like to do that, but sometimes i just dont have enough burst to DPS someone down so i use that, but i guess i could survive way more till i get a better chance to sweep the enemy down if i cleanse myself.....

tbh im pretty close to getting prox, i need like 20k more AP but it's going kinda slow atm (i go ganking solo in imp sewers mostly....) and i agree about that second part

i've been thinking about maybe getting a blood spawn piece because of that, my stam regen is only about 550 and that's sometimes not enough.....

thanks for the comment, this is basically everything i thought and know about myself in pvp in one text wall, helps alot

Yea, I don't use it too much anymore now that proxy is unlocked. But beforehand I had used it quite a bit on my back before before charging in..

In the current state of the game, gather as much spell power as possible. One way to bump spell power quite a bit is to use willpower jewelry enchanted with spell power. In 1.7, the spell power enchants have been given a huge bump. Sets give something like 129 and a spell power enchant is something like 174...

already doing that, i got 3.3k spell power buffed on my DW bar....... though i do have problems with regen / sustain, thought ill switch one or two of those enchants (on my willpower jewelery) to reduced spell cost.....

If you're having a hard time keeping resources in heavy armor, try going with a 5-piece seducer heavy. I know, I know, it severely gimps your Spell DMG but I found it's a great starting point to work on resource management (2500+ recovery with regen food in heavy armor? yes please!). I made it a game to just have more resources than other people after a while. Sure, they could do a lot more burst DPS than me, but eventually most players run out, meanwhile if you're in seducer you still have half of your magicka and regening at a ridiculous rate.

When I get into a 1vX scenario I just slowly wear them down with sweeps (healing myself) and a resto staff and go after the guy doing the most damage (probably lowest regen therefore will run out of resources first). Rinse and repeat until you have no competitors left. As others said, add Spell Damage enchants and willpower S+B/Dual Wield to add a bit of spellpower and you'll be doing fine. Refine into other sets (magnus, surge, kag's, or whatever) as you get comfortable with the resources you're running.

Now I run heavy build with duals and S&B.
    29k magicka, 13k stamina, 27k health. 1440 mrecavery, 2400 spell damage buffed.

    Duals bar:
    • BoL
    • Entropy
    • Radiant Oppression
    • Reflected Lights (I dislike Toppling Charge - global cd, hard to use in melee, target usualy has CC-immune from jabs so stun is useless. Interrupt is nice though).
    • Puncturing sweep
    • Clouding Swarm

    S&B bar:
    • Defensive stance (counter to Meteors, DK scales, magicka NB's casting range projectiles from invis, and sorcs)
    • Elusive mist
    • Cleanse
    • Channeled focus
    • and one changing ability. Usually I have Harness magicka here.
