To elaborate a little on what @Aett_Thorn said about using class skills for magic, magic works very differently in ESO than in Skyrim.
In Skyrim you equip a spell in one hand or the other (or both). In ESO, instead of this, you have various active skills, and you put them in skill slots on your action bar (you get 5 skill slots on your action bar and 1 ultimate slot - for the purposes of this explanation I'm going to ignore the ultimate slot).
Each active skill lists how much it costs to use - this will be in either magicka or stamina. If it uses magicka (as all of the active skills from your class do at the beginning) then it's a spell. If it uses stamina (as all of the active skills for non-staff weapons do), then it's a weapon ability. All abilities are unlocked by having the skill line in which the ability is found at a high enough level (each skill line has a starting ability that can be unlocked immediately), and by spending a skill point to unlock that ability.
You equip weapons in both hands (you can dual wield one-handed weapons, or use a shield in one hand, or use a weapon that requires two hands), and don't need to worry about keeping one hand free to cast any of your spells that you've put on your action bar. When you've got spells on your action bar and weapons equipped in your hands, you can freely use both spells and weapon attacks.
Hope this helps clear it up for you, and you can now safely run around with a spellsword Redguard using a sword & shield as well as casting spells.
