Ultimately though, can you really blame them? They've discovered a build that will just destroy everyone, so why not have as many people in the faction as possible using it? Really this is a problem on ZOS' end; every class and skill should be a viable option for PVP. If not, it just becomes meta where everyone runs the same thing because everything else sucks in comparison.

Most of the players on DC make builds that are for "fun" then complain in /zone about how they are getting wrecked and why noone is there to help them win stuff.

When given suggestions they say, "I play how I want and when you pay my sub..." or, "No, they are obviously hacking/cheating/exploiting/this game is BS"

Learn to play? Not even once. Not an option for DC.
But wait...wasn't a big selling point of this game that players wouldn't be shoehorned into cookie cutter builds? Isn't having fun part of a video game? Isn't customization often a big part of mmos and rpgs in general?

Is it possible to make a game without cookie cutter builds. With all the passives, skills, sets is it possible for there not to be a combination that is better than the rest?

I feel like you only read the first 10 words of my post, but I'll bite anyways.

Play how you want, have fun. If you complain in zone that x class is OP or claim that they are cheating, but in reality your build just sucks then your premise of "play to have fun" backfires. I mean really, who has fun when they lose constantly?

It's not always the build . I've killed VR 14's on my level 15 DK . Sometimes it's timing , using the environment and sometimes people are just having a bad day . You might be surprised at what can be done with different builds if you incorporate all these factors .

You might have got the last hit, and i dont know what VR14 you fought. You would have never killed me with ten lvl 15 anything.

No I did it solo . Sat on a rock stealthed . Dropped a treb and knocked him off his tiger at the last second . Rushed in with shield charge , swapped to upper cut and dropped banner . End of fight .

Well there definitely always will be a combination that's overall the "best" but other things should be viable as well and build diversity should be something that's encouraged, especially in this game. Players should be able to make a bar with stuff they enjoy using and be at least somewhat comfortable fighting a player with a different build. No skills should be detrimental for the person using them, and there are certainly a good chunk of skills nobody uses simply because they're crap.

Well, my point was that people shouldn't be in a position where they'd need to adjust their playstyles radically in the first place. I'm sure you can agree with that, right? PVP is a lot more fun when it's unpredictable.

The reality here is that there are counters to skills and some builds become more popular due to buffs/nerfs/game-play mechanic changes.

I'm not saying, nor did I ever say, that using the FOTM builds are a requirement to be good. There isn't a "one size fits all" solution in pvp either, especially in a game like this where you are limited to how many skills you can slot. So you have to make choices as to what you are going to bring to the table. Somethings won't be viable in certain environments, and when you find yourself in those environments often and your build isn't working, then it is time adjust your build and adapt to that environment.

Lose constantly? But I thought nobody cared about the score board anymore? I am pretty sure we all get by now the win/lose dynamic in pvp isn't just about "builds". It is so much more than that. It is population, strategies, faction cooperation (and no I am not just talking about an expectation that people play the way you want them to play when grouped with you) but overall cooperation of the guilds in zone at any current time of the day, etc. You can have an absolute stellar build and still be on the losing end of a campaign again and again and it be no fault of your own. You can have an entire faction of stellar builds and still lose campaign after campaign because guilds don't collaborate. Haven't we been told again and again this isn't pvp rather ava?

It does seem that way. Playing in DC, I notice a lot of variety in builds and perhaps that's why we're constantly getting steamrolled. Feels like I'm always fighting the same little group, but when I check Kill Counter I see a looooong string of names...why doesn't it feel like I'm actually killing that many different people?

The answers to these questions and more next...on 60 Minutes.

I feel like you only read the first 10 words of my post, but I'll bite anyways.

Play how you want, have fun. If you complain in zone that x class is OP or claim that they are cheating, but in reality your build just sucks then your premise of "play to have fun" backfires. I mean really, who has fun when they lose constantly?

    tl;dr:

    eN8DH0z.gif

When I said lose, I thought it was obvious that it was in the context of losing engagements. You can't win these engagements without groups of decent players with good builds that complement each other well.

As far as campaign score, I do my part to the best of my ability and if others had the same mindset of doing what they can while being the best that they can, we might stand a better chance at winning. I'm a very competitive person and I hate losing, but I'm not going to get hung up over things that are out of my control (ie, nightcapping).
It is so much more than that. It is population, strategies, faction cooperation

I agree with this and that is part of what I've been getting at. Learning and understanding situational awareness, using terrain to your advantage, taking advantage of flanks, distraction tactics, focusing targets, etc are all a part of the game, and these are elements of pvp that I have noticed many players don't/can't grasp.

Build how you want but you can't do that AND expect to be the best at the same time.

Team play is important to me so I'm not good in a 1v1 very often. Generally I just want to survive long enough to get some heals out.

I remember when DC had a lot of active pvp guilds in cyrodiil, before they mostly quit the game or defected to ep/ad. Now it's just LoM and npk? Regardless you cant expect part time pvpers who arent in hardcore pvp guilds to even know enough about the up to the second pvp meta to have the best cookie cutter fotm build. Especially with so many people coming back to the game from long absences.

But, DC certainly seems to have a higher proportion of experienced solo gankers :) Stealthed DC everywhere
