Separate install?

When I turn on PTS and select it in the launcher, the "Play" button changes to "Install"

Do I really have to download and store another 60 Gb on the machine just to log onto a different server? o.O

I would really like to help testing new updates, but I won't download and install a whole second install with my 5Mbit/s internet speed.

The PTS is a separate installation indeed. Update 6 is not available for testing yet though.

The current (still 1.5.x) PTS client is ~ 41 GB in size when installed, not 60 GB. And yes, it needs to be a separate client from live, because it is a new software build, designed to work together with the new server software version. This is pretty much state of the art with every MMO that offers PTS access.

    Nope, it's not.

For The Secret World, you can switch between Live and Testlive (PTS) and it will download the PTS patch or download the patch to roll you back.

I wish ESO would do the same. Two installations really shouldn't be necessary.

Like I said, not a viable option when you have a 5 Mbit/s internet line.

And it's not really cleaner and more reliable. Switching between Live and PTS for The Secret World is always clean and reliable (you can have 2 installations there if you want as well though).

I hope they'll look into making this possible in the future :)

Is it possible to click install on pts Client, and then Close it, and then copy the live Client to the pts folder and on NeXT startup the pts Client will just update a few MBs and done?

I had to get a cheap backup HDD for PTS. My SSD was to small. If you want to install on a separate hard disk you need to download a new installer from your account page and install it on your new disk. Launch the launcher, turn the public test environment on, then select to download the PTS.

I did have a weird problem with two separate installations. My main character couldn't log in to live over the holidays. I uninstalled the PTS installation and it fixed the crash. Then I re-installed the PTS on the backup and it was still working. Weird error but just to let you know I ran into a small glitch because of it.

I have an extra HDD, but I'm not willing to spend a day using most of my internet speed downloading an extra installation just to get on PTS.

I guess I won't be aiding in the testing then. Too bad, I would really like to.

just download it overnight or when youre off at work or school or something. 2 installs is the best way to do this. I do agree this game is rather large, but I love the game so who cares? delete some *** or pick up a cheap external drive

Has anyone been able to successfully, without causing any bugs, install the PTS on a different hard drive than the regular install?

I tried PTS quite some time ago and would do it again.. but I have since built a pc but the SSD is not large enough to fit another install on. I do have a large hard drive in this PC as well though...

Or maybe I'll just use the old terrible laptop and test out the new update with 15 FPS? lol

-Deleting stuff from SSD is not an option. It was purchased for OS, ESO, and a select few programs, with enough space left over to run efficiently.

Yes, I have played with PTS on my HDD and Live on my SSD for a while now. As I said above, I ran into a glitch once. I wouldn't put much into that though, just a heads up if you run into it. It has worked for months and still works now.

BTW: Here is a ZOS made video on doing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAsNdBLLoXA&feature=youtu.be
It just says to make a new installation in a folder on your backup hard drive.

Here is a quote from another thread on the same topic. I haven't tried this yet but I am going to in the next few days to get ready for 1.6. My ssd is 92 gigs after formatting but it still can't fit both live and pts on it without needing more space during updates (I guess for unpacking files and such)

Hmm. mklink sounds interesting, but if I understand correctly from here:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/278262-mklink-create-use-links-windows.html

it would still require me to put all files on a different drive?
What I would like to do is keep my current install on my fast ssd, put the pts install on a different drive. I'm not sure that can be done even with mklink, unless I am missing something.

The OP would be able to use this however and at least I learned something today. ;)

The whole point with mklink is that you can redirect an file or directory to another place.
So in you case if you have ESO installed on a small SSD and want to install the PTS client also you would make a directory link on the SSD drive for the PTS installation that points to a physical directory on another drive.

Example F: is your SSD drive and you have installed ESO into it in the directory F:\WinGames\Zenimax Online\ and E: is the drive you would like the PTS client to be installed in.
Create the directory where you would like the PTS client to be installed to on E:. For example E:\WinGames\Eso PTS
    Then create the directory link
mklink /d "F:\WinGames\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online PTS" "E:\WinGames\Eso PTS"

The launcher will now think it is installing the PTS client to F:\WinGames\\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online PTS but in fact it is stored in E:\WinGames\Eso PTS

So the symbolic link I posted above ended up being a bit more trouble than it is worth.

After shuffling files around I can get it to play from the original launcher, but updating seems to cause "permission" problems.

In the end just installing a second launcher on the drive you want the PTS to be is easier. You can choose to only install the PTS, no need to install a second live client, no muss no fuss.

Is there a way for me to download the files at work and bring them home to install the PTS on my home computer? My home connection is slow, but my work connection is ridiculously fast.

No unfortunately. The launcher downloads and installs the game in one process. There isn't a full installation available for download so that you can bring it home.

Best thing you can do is download the launcher and start the installation the night before you go to work. Through the night and your time at work it should have plenty of time to complete.

Well he can if he can install it at work. Then just take the entire "Zenimax Onine\The Elder Scrolls Online" directory home with him on a big thumb drive.

Then just download and run the installer at home and copy the files from the thumb drive into the appropriate folders. Done.

SSD's are small, ESO is rather large. ESO (just the live version) takes up nearly half the space of my 100 gig SSD. You also need space for patches which can be up to 30 gigs which it needs to store and unpack on the same drive (the patcher checks to see if you have space).

So you need 40 gig for live, 40 gig for PTS, and 30+ gig for patching. 110+ gigs is by far the largest amount of space for any game I have ever played.

That would work since it's more or less what i did.

64gig Thumb drive would do the work. My PTS folder take about 38gig for now.

30 Gb is only once to install the PTS game and after that only the patch will need to be downloaded, but some patch can easily be 2-3gb. You can't download them on the fly to play on the test server and go back to game server.

Neverwinter can be patched on the fly for some minor change, but they still have one install for each server and big patch to download.

Yeah, I get that this game doesn't support patching back and forth between the live server and test server, I just don't agree with this statement:
This is pretty much state of the art with every MMO that offers PTS access.
The Secret World lets you patch back and forth between live and test.

Still, it's true that if the patch is that big, it might be more adventageous to have 2 installs if you want to get back to the live servers quickly after each time you test.
