Burning bug?

Today I was playing on dawnbreaker when me and my group were wiped instantly. I am not exaggerating here, I didn't have time to blink before we all died with only a couple enemies around us.
Looking in the combat log I was hit with a light attack and fire ring, together totaling under 200 damage, and then burning for 2.8k. As I understood it burning was a DoT effect that has a chance to be applied when a fire spell is cast. What I do not understand is how that dot can hit for 2.8k instantly. I was not feeling any lag or latency in combat leading up to the event, there was nothing else on my combat log, and the two people with me also got hit for the exact same amount with instant deaths.
This happened again to one of us not five minutes later, with the burning effect coming from the same player as before resulting in an instant kill.

Attatched is a screenshot from a member of my group also affected by this, but hit for slightly less. Regardless it is unreasonable damage for a DoT to deal instantly or in a single tick

Any ideas on what is happening here?

Exploiting players that are aware of this bug and still use it should be public displayed in a wall of shame and then temporary banned.
