Go on and on.
ONCE AGAIN. For people who can't quite grasp the concept.
There. Is. A. Difference. Between. Achievements. And. Progression.
Character A finished the Fighter's guild skill line and unlocks the title, Character B is created, can utilise the title BUT still has to do the quests if they want the spells / exp / rewards etc for that particular quest line. Not complicated stuff. IF an achievement results in a skill point Character B must complete said achievement to also get the skill point. The obvious issue with that is a player may be unsure of which character has which skill point related achievement unlocked.. but that's a different matter entirely.
Anyone who has played GW2 will understand the concept. No I'm not saying ESO should be like GW2, I'm simply stating the achievement system was better (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Achievement).
kirnmalidus wrote: »That may be true of most of the examples provided (that progress and achievements are discrete), but he is right about Undaunted. Progress in that skill line and achievement points are exactly the same – you progress in the skill line by getting achievements related to dungeons, and there is a one-to-one relationship between achievement points and experience in the skill line.
kirnmalidus wrote: »I worked really hard to get the Tamriel Hero achievement, and finally finished enough quests in Bangkorai to get it last weekend. This required completing quests in a VR10 zone.
If the achievements were shared between characters, you could get all of the faction hero achievements on a character that started in each faction, never have to play through the more difficult VR versions of the zones and still get the Tamriel Hero achievement.
That would seriously undermine the value of the achievement and really irritate everyone who actually had to complete the more difficult VR versions of the zone to get it.
Why do you feel compelled to do it all over again?
I personally relish the thought, but completing achievements is entirely optional and basically you want a system in game that takes that away. You already have addons to pinpoint every last lorebook and skyshard in the game, go use those if you don't want to achieve anything for yourself or your character. Let those of us who enjoy it play on.
Someone mentioned the SWTOR legacy system and implied it was account wide. It wasn't. I know that if you got a character to L50, one of their skills was given to new characters to use with a long cooldown, plus a buff and there was a fun emote, but things like Datacrons (akin to our skyshards) had to be earned individually, as too did the companion, exploration and dungeon achievements.

Do what all over again?
The_Sadist wrote: »Given that achievements yield titles, skill points and potentially dyes in the near future the entirely optional tag is somewhat grey. There's a difference between finding the skyshards and lore books and spending literal days of farming chests or spending hours waiting for bosses in dungeons to spawn or spending weeks farming Dolmens in the hopes that the named mobs spawn. I love the game, this is but a suggestion.
I never touched SWTOR, so I can't discuss it. I did play GW2 and it had / has an awesome account wide achievement system, but eh.
You were one who wrote: "and now I have to do it all over again, 4 times, joy?"
Why don't you tell us what you meant when you said it?
How is it grey?
I have no opposition to new achievements that are account wide - say, an achievement for reaching VR on a character from all three factions. But it seems pretty clear cut to me that titles and skill points quite rightly only belong on a character that has played the content to achieve them.
No point in even mentioning dyes until we know what achievement rewards them and how that reward will be implemented. I would hope it is crafting based, but very much doubt it will be. We don't know that using them will bind equipment to our character. If they do, then all the more reason to gain achievements for every character you'd like to open the dye system on
If they don't bind equipment then you've basically be given an account wide option to dye. But really until we know, there is little point using them as basis for your argument.
No arguments against? I have seen plenty.
If achievements were account wide, how do my alts keep track of them when they are actually playing? My alts are still going to want to make the map white after all, even if you don't, My alts will still want to know how many skyshards they have still to find, even if you don't.
I find it strange you feel compelled to do all achievements, yet not quests or Dolmens or anything else in game. What is it about 'titles' that makes you feel this way? Especially in a game that has nameplates off by default. I never used them in SWTOR and I don't use them here. It kind of defeats the object of picking a unique name only to add a label that is ten-a-penny.
And the ironic thing is, this compulsion you have is the reason you feel the game is a grind. It isn't a grind for me and it wouldn't be for you if you would just let the achievements go.
BTW, if you answered my question about skyshard addons, I missed it. Would you agree that using such addons remove any type of meaning to 'achievement'?
