Only thing bad about the combat is that you only have 5 slots + an ultimate on each weapon slot. IMO that limits the options to the point where it becomes too stream lined. IE there is no diversity.

I would have liked to see you could slot maybe max 4 class skills and 4 other skills + an ultimate. Or that you had some extra slots that where restricted to NPC guild skills only...

I'm used to play with 30 or so hotkeys without any problem in MMOs. But even console players should not have a problem to use 8 hotkey slots.

I like the combat system because I don't feel like I'm just cycling and doing the same spells or attacks over and over again. I actually can control the blocking and striking motions of my weapons and it just gives it a more realistic fantasy kind of mood to the combat.

I enjoyed dungeon combat with other players VERY MUCH!
    It's a exciting!!!

But solo combat is very boring.
I want more tactical combat skill like a AssasinCreed4 or

Think about solo combat situation in ESO .

There are No healer, No tank,No backup support,
and 20 dangerous enemies are surrounding you .
In this situation ,You may choose stealth strategy....

But,this game does'nt have much stealth tactics.
Therefor, solo combat in ESO is boring.

Lag naturally ruins the fun when present, but in absence of which, the combat is gloriously fun. Fast and fluid, but most of all satisfying be it ranged combat with a bow, mage spells, or good old steel on steel.

    It's ok, but..

Having to press the same key three times to get an effect to fire is annoying.
Facing issues are annoying. They affect some classes and not others. (as in, you have to face the targets with some classes and some skills auto-face)
Having no permanent chase cam so you can ditch the mouse-look is ... surprising in 2014. NWN1 had better and more variety of camera options, back in 2002. 12 years later, we get a crap camera? Give me a locked cam, please.

There appears to be in-combat regen and out-of-combat regen, and some kind of disparity, but it's not exactly clear how/what it is. Some parts of the game indicate there is, then in reality it appears there isn't?
Capping out regen, resists, or amor doesn't seem to have any effect on combat.
Gear takes damage even if you don't.
Repair costs are so bad, it's cheaper to replace your gear entirely rather than repair it, which is insane. (and no, I'm not talking about dying, this is entirely separate from dying)

Mobs appear to generate damage from no-where, with no visual indication as to the source. In other words, what you don't see can kill you and fast. It's almost like overlapping ground effects are blocking each other. Especially true with 'grey','frost', 'dark grey', 'black' and 'shadow' type ground effects all overlapping.
It is almost a universal truth that you will never have enough stamina to dodge out of a ground effect if you use any stamina-based abilities, with capped stamina regen. Hey, you stamina using fools? Yeah, you're dead.
In other words.. the stamina cost for dodging is stupidly high, at the moment. If you're going to base your entire 'skill' mechanic around stamina conservation, there's no point in having the rest of the builds, they're not viable.

Having seen the astonishing disparity in personal power between a DK and Sorc, well, let's just say I understand why there are so many Sorcs now. Being able to kill any same level open world mob either by kiting indefinitely or blowing it up in 2-3 hits? yeah, that's fun. having to suffer through deleterious effects because you choose to get up close and personal? Meh. Been there, done that in 14 other MMO's, not inclined to put up with it here again.
In other words, players should gain something significant to be forced to stand in the fire, be stun locked, rooted, knocked down and be out of stamina constantly due to blocking and/or dodging. If not, everyone is just going to go ranged and never die and we're back to Rift again, rez'ing the melee while the ranged/DPS laugh.

Anyway, stepping into serious rant territory now, maybe the servers are back up, finally.

I put down love it since well i do!

Very immersive and you really need to think fast. Use ability, hit (melee or ranged) , dodge, block or run a few steps since mob might aoe. Keeps me in the moment and teaches me something new. Alot list classes, skills and what not but iit dont matter that much to be honest, if you figure out what you like, how you like to fight, you will be good at it.
Solo and group fighting differ alot ofcourse so getting some abilities that work for you solo and some for group fights (maybe some for pvp only too).
Once you start to figure that out you might even have a skill setup for certain types of mobs/encounters. Takes but a few sec to rearrange skills ;)

With all this said, i can fully understand those that dont like the fighting in ESO. Me i am an experienced player and well i do like to fight and figuring out the system. If you are a new player or well played a game with less immersive (complex) fighting system, this can be quite overwelming and it gets you down losing and dieing.

I was very annoyed in the begining too i admit, dieing so much and was totaly out of money to repair my armor yet again hehe. Died to some pesky imps, 8 times in a row before i even got to the boss of a starter quest (Doshia).

But i will share what i was told, you will figure out the game more and more the higher your level get and you will find your playstyle.
Dont listen too much to others, think for yourself! :)

The only reason I marked a low score on the poll is due to lag with the current combat system. Playing with 250ms regularly often means that dodging and the like is really awful and there's always a delay on abilities sometimes noticeably .However the combat concept in the game is good and I would say that I love it if I had a better ping to the game.

Best combat I've experienced in an MMO. I love having to be active during a fight; blocking, dodging, aiming spells all feel so fluid and give battles a challenge that tab targeting and skill rotation based combat just doesn't provide.

After playing this, I can say without hesitation that I'll never go back to an MMO that doesn't have active, action-based combat.

I love it when it works. But when my 1-hand/shield user starts swinging/bashing right through the enemy without doing any damage, or when my dual-wield Templar stops responding to any commands and I have to open and close inventory really fast to start fighting again, I like it a lot less.

Liking it on my Destruction Staff Sorc, though.

I like the combat, the only thing that bothers me is the skillbar limit. I know why this is done and understand that its a balance, so its not a complaint, just my opinionated response to the poll is that having to choose only 5 skills is extremely constricting esp. as I play a healer so am very limited on what I can do. Also I find that 10/15 of my class skills would be nice situational abilities, but not good enough to have a full time position on my skill bar. And oh, I can't actually level/morph them unless they are there. So I've respec'd out of everything that wont get full time presence on 'the bar'. Yes I know I can weapon swap and get 5 more, but the time it takes to do so in combat is awkward and clunky and if I could just have my ten little boxes if I elected to use Resto staff on both slots, it would make me much happier. :)

I mentioned it in another thread, but I really, really enjoy the combat in ESO. A big problem that I had with Skyrim, even back at launch, was how slow and kind of clunky combat felt. Considering I'm not a mage and I've never really used magic beyond supportive spells (and even then that was only in Morrowind and Oblivion, where I could cast spells without unequipping my bow or shield), Skyrim didn't have much going for it.

Mainly I'd say that the combat in ESO is more fluid and more "agile", so to speak. One minor thing I'm glad they brought back was attacking while jumping, which was something I missed dearly and helps make you seem a lot more, well, agile. The dodge roll is also really useful and it's very satisfying to use, though I'd argue that the stamina costs are still a bit too high for my tastes, especially considering it's also pooled between skills and blocking. Perhaps I use active skills a bit too much.

What really makes it feel great is the way there's an ebb and flow to everything, though it shows up best in the one-on-one encounters, instead of when you're put up against a big group. You can attack an enemy with a stamina-using skill, block an attack and dodge-roll out of the way of an AoE, and then you start using some magic spells to keep the pressure on while letting your stamina regenerate.

I find it to be really limiting because we can only have so many skills slotted. The combat is very similar to Guild Wars 2's style, but GW2 has basically double the amount of skills available. Each weapon has it's own bar, like ESO has now, plus the class specific skills, including the "ultimate" skill, mixing and matching those skills adds a lot of versatility to the combat.

In ESO, I sometimes feel like I'd like to slot another skill, but unfortunately, I can't, I can only switch to my other loadout. And to be perfectly honest, the switching loadout is pretty unresponsive sometimes too.

Because the skills gain experience from being on my bar, I sometimes have to choose between what I'd really like to use now, and what I need to level up for dungeons (like a heal or whatever).

I also feel that the dodging is extremely unresponsive, it sometimes just doesn't work at all, even with max stamina. Or sometimes you'll dodge and still get hit, so you just wasted that stamina for no reason.

I also don't really care for the camera. This kind of camera is fine for a single player PC game with an inventory system like Morrowind, or a controller supported game like Skyrim, but it really doesn't work well with a keyboard/ mouse MMO. In MMO's I need to have control of my mouse cursor for many reasons.

I guess because GW2 was the game I was playing before this, I kind of feel like combat in ESO is basically a watered down, and less responsive version of GW2 combat with a worse camera system.

combat is clunky at best, sometimes abilities don't fire at all and sometimes there is considerable delay between pressing the key and when they ability actually gets fired in the game and it has nothing to with the overall latency or pin. This delay happens even when there is no lag.

I don't like the combat and ability design at all.

Way too difficult for me. For instance I'm level 11 and still can't beat Doshia; you have to kill EVERY orb EVERY time or you might as well not even be there. I like the idea of timing my blocks, attacks, and dodges but in practice I don't see the enemies' "tells" that an attack is incoming unless it's a power attack.
  • wayrestb16_ESO
    It's ok
It's "OK" because, for me, combat is generally a necessary evil in mmorpg's and this combat takes very little thought or effort.

I first saw weapon-dependent skills in GW2 and immediately hated it when my thief inexplicably gained a short-range teleport spell simply from holding a pistol. It's too focused on artificial gameplay mechanics and has nothing to do with a virtual world with some form of internal logic.

It makes me laugh when people talk of tactics and strategy in connection with the limited skillset. Tactics are (severely) limited because your options are limited; to argue to the contrary makes no sense. The only way in which strategy plays a role is that you fight a boss, see what skills you need, die, then slot the required skills. If you had access to all skills you could use the appropriate ones right away without the need to die first.

Overall the combat is far more 'action' than 'rpg' and is for people who don't want to have to think-on-their-feet too much. BUT...I find that I do actually like that about it, at least as a change from the more traditional mmorpg setup. I just wish I had more skills/options available in combat.

If I ever go back to a more challenging mmorpg I know I'll die a lot because of how 'slack' games like this have made me.

I like the idea of the active combat system, though to be frank, GW2 uses it far, far better. The bugs and general clunkiness almost makes me wish it was back to the old stand-and-click system though, as it eliminates a lot of what makes an active system fun..

And the rather significant disparity between ranged and melee combat will hopefully be addressed at some point. I'll give you an example:

My level 4 DK with full homemade heavy, sword and board (Both homemade as well, eg. the best I could get), healthfood and skill-shields could not stand toe to toe with the werewolf in the Daggerfall level 4 quests without me frantically dodging, eating healpots and praying for a lucky swing.. (My armor was way beyond hitting the soft cap and I had as much health, as I could possible put into him)

When I went through that same quest with a sorc, it took me roughly 20 secs to down the wolf and I never took any damage at all.. (And this with only the standard starter gear for a level 4 char)

I'm not saying you need to nerf the sorc, I enjoy mine very well and he has his difficulties as well.. But the DK was maxed out in tank mode and I could barely see the effect it had on damage mitigation.. That just seems wrong..

While that may be more of a class-balance issue, I find it to have a significant impact on how I enjoy combat in general.. And until it's fixed (if ever), I wont love it.. IF, however, they make melee classes on par with ranged (and give the templar back his mana-regen), as well as fix the various bugs and lag, I'll love this system above all others I've tried to date.

I gave it ok, because i like the concept, however combat needs some serious polishing, be it responsiveness, animations, or simple things like stable status information.

Also while i do get limitation of active spells / abilities to 5 I feel like longer buffs or pets should have separate sections. Then again i guess it was simplified for consoles and now it could be a balance issue

However, i think they fell far short of what was intended.

Lag, abilities not activating, weapon switching being slow (takes up to 2 seconds, sometimes more, from button switch the weapon change), mobs not always being where they are shown on screen, random difficulty spikes, lack of information about wtf is going on...
There's a ton of flaws, so, as it stands, i enjoy combat for the most part, but the flaws are way too obvious for me to truly love the system.

Also, the heavy attack from behind stun, it does not work most of the time (probably enemy facing not being shown correctly due to lag or something).
