Do you enjoy the combat in ESO?

brandon.coker101_ESO
Seems like a love it or hate it kind of thing for most people. Personally I love it.

To me it's a great combination of traditional mmo and an Elder Scrolls game. And I just hit lvl 15 and can switch weapons in combat now which adds a whole new fun to it.

I'm just curious what everyone else thinks...

I really like the combat system. Like you said, being able to switch weapons in combat, which also gives the possibility to play a lot of different styles, since this also means you will be able to use different skills.

I love the flexibility and dynamic nature. I really like having to think through my strategy for groups when I am soloing and to swap in skills to my bars based on types of mobs and situations. Combat feels very active and smooth. I also like when I get to pull of "synergies" which benefit the team . Best that I have seen and great balance between Elder Scrolls and MMO worlds

As a long time solo player trying to enjoy TES in another situation I find it very limiting & very much aimed at a certain 'type' of player - i.e. the experienced player not the newer player. I am a long time gamer and I am struggling and getting towards quitting a game I otherwise love because instakill opponents in some (but by no means all) combats are blocking progress. My wife who is a totally new gamer who got enticed in by me is just finding it depressing.

Coupled with that is the less than helpful nature of people who boast about how easy they find everything but when asked are unwilling or unable to offer any suggestions apart from 'if you don't like it stop playing'.

I had a deep unease when TES went into an MMO that the game would lose it's heart but I was impressed by the beta and took a gamble - i am disappointed I made the wrong call.

I enjoy it, sometimes I love it. I still have the odd problem where some skills will only work if I have an enemy in the crosshairs and other skills it doesn't seem to matter. I can't decide if that's a bug or a feature  , keeps it interesting either way.

I would prefer a few more skills I could use at any one time and something between the quick and slow attacks. The blocking/stun system is fun.

The only complaint I have about combat right now is minor bugs and the odd bit of lag (EU player), which are fixable. Its annoying having two summons up, I use an ultimate ability and both summons disappear because my weapons & skill bars have just switched on me. Suddenly i'm left with 3 mobs a skill bar full of heals and basic restoration staff attacks and generally a trip from a waystation soon after.

"Like it", although some bits don't seem to work so well imho:

    - in the tutorial you are taught 'block'+'heavy hit' = knockdown. That's fine in the tutorial, but afterwards it becomes fairly irrelevant (combat is rarely 1v1 and many players have an on-demand knockdown/stun which doesn't require so much work).
    - most creatures do not have any form of CC immunity. If you have an on-demand knockdown then bosses tend to become a joke.
    - AoE is crazy good.
    - almost every battle in the game is harder as melee. (you will also tend to tag less mobs)
    - anchors are trivially easy. (in general the game does not scale content to the number of players)

    It's alright.

It would be better if there weren't:
    • Lag, creating issues hitting targets even though you're reticle is directly over it.
    • Player animations beginning. I've noticed many times that animations don't start so it looks like you haven't begun a swing, cast, etc.
    • UI lockups. I've had this happen many times during combat, the UI appears to lock up thus not allowing any attacks until you use a /reloadui or re-log command.
    • There were some type of visual notification of CC. Many times you get stunned by an NPC and there is no(or very little) visual notification that you're CC'd aside from not being able to move or attack. This becomes even worse as more things are going on.

The combat is fun and enjoyable, not really any complaints out side of the occasional targeting glitch were my spell does not make contact. But for the most part I think they are on the right track. There is always room for improvement in the world of video games, so I am going to just keep it at (like it) instead of (love it).

I hate it, but not because of how its supposed to work, but because it is still really clunky as far as responsiveness.

Find myself having to sometimes press abilities several times for them to actually go off and no I am not lagging. Melee just doesn't feel fluid at all and feels really slow and off. Bow combat... well lets just say its overall pretty wonky. Staff combat is also strange but seems a mild compared to Bow and Melee.

That get's pretty annoying, to be honest. I blame the last couple AAA mmos out there for the dive in community synergy. It's a shame that people aren't interested in helping one another.

As for the combat, I really enjoy it. I die a lot. A LOT! I'm really, really bad at the combat. Did I mention that I die a lot? Anyway, even though I'm dying every few seconds, I like the versatility of the combat.

I'm a DPS caster (Templar) and I managed to discover that I survive much better when I'm using a 1h+Shield and Heavy Armor. So, I really like the fact that I can tailor my gear/weapons/skills to compensate for my extraordinarily bad reflexes and abysmal combat awareness.

Because of my poor adaptability to the combat system, I know I'll never be an end-game raider or top pvp'er, but I'm okay with that. I'm happy just exploring the world, experiencing the story, and crafting.

The fact that ESO allows me to do that makes the game much better than I expected it to be.

I really enjoy the interactive nature of combat. I don't feel like I'm bored mindlessly pushing buttons until something dies. Instead I have to actually think about what I'm doing in a fight. It's quite refreshing after playing so many auto target games.

I really like it, they've improved it alot since beta but some things just drag it down for me, like how it can feel really unresponsive some times and i often get hit even though i'm out of range or outside of the red marker.
But i hope that's all beacuse of lag it will be fixed when they move the european server to you know... Europe...

Except the bugs haha, the game play is smooth. I hardly experience lag in combat itself, only when dealing with NPC dialogue or bank during peak times, and I am on the west coast.

I think it's pretty responsive and I was skeptical at potential ability delay (a la SWTOR) which I have not seen. I'm impressed.

I like it a lot. I would of chose love it, but I wish I could use more spells. Seems like there are so many good choices, and you have very little active abilities to work with. Watching mana and stamina can be rough starting out. Also like someone says, sometimes seems unresponsive. I feel like a lot of times, I'm faster than my character can handle, and things don't process as fluid.

This is mostly true, but there have been multiple times where timing or blocking can become a reliable knockdown which then frees up your ability bar for something else.

On another note, did you know that if you heavy attack an enemy from behind it knocks them down? So when the shield enemies or Clannfears do their charge, you can heavy them from behind for the game-altering knockdown.
I wish I had noticed that during the first Mage's Guild quest...

I like the combat so far, at least its better than some other MMOs I have recently played (secret world *cough*) . The combat mechanics (blocking/interrupting/rolling) are fine, ability to swap weapon set in middle of combat is awesome.

But there are some issues I hope will be ironed out later. The biggest of these is the perma-stun bug that sometimes appears and makes my character unable to do anything but slowly walk and (sometimes) block.

Another is getting hit by AOEs even after you have rolled out of the aoe area. I think this may have something to do with latency, but I think the situation should be finetuned slightly.

Also I think that there should be still more attack slots.. just so one could experiment and have fun with more abilities..

Also if one wants to dedicate both ability bars for same weapon, it should be made easier and not require a duplicate weapon of same type.

I quite like it but it feels a bit clunky at times, sometimes it can be spot on and so fluid that I feel unstoppable, other times (like when mobs run partially through you) you flail around like a fish out of water and if you're in third person it can be annoyingly hard to judge! I'm sure though it's a matter of me getting used to the game :)
'You are being elitest' is the excuse of the casuals who fail so hard the devs have to nerf content into the ground.

These are some really valid points. If it worked flawlessly it would be pretty good I'd imagine. Especially with the unit collision, which I'd also love to see in PvP at some point.

Talking about the unit collision, I know it's still fresh and I'm glad they've added it but it could some work here and there. For example, it's a bit weird that your horse instantly stops when you run into an npc as if it's made of stone. I hope they'll fine tune it a bit when other priorities have been dealt with.
