Why not just have leather nodes like everything else?

"But larger comes from dead animals, so you can't have nodes"

So, it is not possible to have nodes of freshly killed animals? You are in the wild. Animals kill each other all the time. In other games you can skin other players kills if they don't. Why not just have specific node spots that an animal has died at?

There wouldn't be a node, however, there could be "leather farmers" much like cattle farmers that have corralled animals that could be farmed for leather throughout the game. I think that this would put leather gathering on the same foot hold as the others. Make the drop rate a little less for these "farmed" animals so that it's not overly easy for leatherworkers also.

Drop rate is really poor. I have stacks of metal and cloth resources, but when it comes to leather, I can't even craft myself a full set. I was farming Skeevers in Rivenspire for almost 2 hours and still I lacked 3 to complete the set.

Oh well, at least we can level clothing with light armor too. I'm more concerned that there is NO CRAFTABLE LIGHT ARMOR JERKIN. You can buy them, you can occasionally loot them, but cannot craft them..bull#$@!

Never wasted any time for hide/leather farming.
Medium\light armor drops are so common, you get much more materials by simply deconstruct items you found while adventuring.

There are certain mobs with extreme drop rates. You can get stacks of hundreds within an hour.

Yesterday I tried to sell 100 pcs of second tier leather for 750g. Nobody was interested in buying it. To me leather is the easiest material to get if you know how.

I feel your pain. I try to attack every wolf that I see, but often they won't drop anything.

Not that this is an ideal situation, but gather the jute and use it to level the skill. Then use the leather for crafting the items you want to use.

This, keen eye is a useless tree for medium armour users and the random drops for simple raw scrap hides are a hit or miss. I recall one of my characters pending an hour in Kenarthi's Roost just killing mud crabs, thunderbugs and what not to have nothing drop. I ended up with just 17-23 raw hide scraps. Jute was everywhere and so was iron....kind of made me think twice for medium armour.

    I think that the medium armor leather scarps need a boost, and that can be done in many ways;
1 increase the drop amount/rate of em
2 increase the amount you get while refining it,
3 nodes as mentioned before i personally don't like this idea but still
4 change mats needed to craft items think about it you dont need 8 whole wolf pelts to make a pair of shoes...
    and so on
I as a crafter find that the medium armor tire is broken due to this lack of mats at least in the first tire of leather i haven't been to lvl 15+ more then in the last beta, but i remember it being about the same there. an example I've joust spent an hour farming wolfs and deer i mined any iron in my path while clearing em and at the end of the grinding for mats i got 30 leather scraps and 70 iron ore..... and I did not make an effort to grab the iron due to the fact that I've already got 5 stacks of it in the bank.

It is a pain, relying on the less-than-stellar drop rates from kills to make gear, but as has been posted a few times, levelling up making the cloth gear still counts. I level up making mage gear and save the leather for my actual gear.

Those harvestable nodes, and shredding dropped gear, make for the tailoring to be on a par with my blacksmithing. And after all these years of harvesting in various MMO's I can spot a farming node a mile away. You just have to think a little non-linear.

I get more foul hide than I do hide scraps. Those need to be taken out and replaced with more hide scraps.

Why not just let me "skin" an animal I kill, a deer, or a wolf, that gives between 1-3 scraps?
  • LilBudyWizerub17_ESO
I don't really see the issue. I'm setting on 300+ rawhide and my craftsman just leveled out of it. If you're giving away armor you, maybe, ought to stop that. There's little point in that. I went farming in the morning and got nearly 50 items. I went adventuring with my wife in the evening and got another 50 items. So why give away armor? So they don't have to play? Use your crafting skill to make something special.

Whilst I understand what you mean, that really doesn't make any sense:

    - player A attacks a mob that is defending an ore vein. They gain XP, multiple ore, and maybe loot (which may be metal, allowing deconstruction for XP and mats).

    - player B attacks a mob for leather. They gain XP, *maybe* a hide [or guts/vendor item].

Personally, that's not a good deal for player B.

My level 26 Khajiit had to fight some level 30 creatures and get on low health several times for around 1 hour to get leather scraps. After all that, he found 33 Leather scraps from all those crocs, skeevers and imps.....which he refined to get a total of 24 Leather.

Not to mention run in a whole new area in greenshade ignoring everything just for those leather scraps.....

It is such a crap shot with creatures, its not fun anymore.

So, my earlier post, where I wasn't having a problem doesn't really ring true anymore.

I recently reached Rivenspire (DC) and was going around fairly quickly (trying to catch up to a friend who joined DC and quickly surpassed me and sits happily at level 33 while I just hit 27). That aside, I realized this morning that I still had level 24 medium armor on (Shadow set and some other crafted stuff). I had upgraded a few of them to blue and the rest were green, but I realized I should probably craft some better gear!

Then I realized I didn't have the tier 3 material (a.k.a leather) or leather scraps to make 24+ gear. I think I may be able to get that by fighting trolls in Rivenspire, but I'm not 100% sure.

Is that an accurate assumption or do I have to go to Alik'r to find that? It seems that the general consensus from what I can find on the board is that the animals you have to farm that drop leather (not rawhide, not hide, but leather) appear in the next area up rather than the one you're currently in at ~level 25.

I also don't seem to see a lot of medium armor drops. I always get a ton of light and a few heavies, but rarely medium.

Suggestions for where a level 27 NB can farm for leather? :3

OK, I will ignore previous comments because previous misunderstandings abound and are relentlessly commented upon without sincere forethought and/or experience.

Levelling leather crafting is not so bad as levelling enchanting. Enchanting just plain sucks compared to all other crafts. That being said, read on:

If you play the zones, the quests, explore the map, and loot everything available as most would, in order, as "Joe/Jane Player" as quests are given, you wind up between level 30-40, and nothing in your zone drops the thick leather which you have the skill for and need to craft armor for yourself. It won't exist before you hit the next zone, regardless of the mob level in your quest area. Period.

(YES, you CAN skip quests and head to the next zone and get the leather drops you need from the (level 37? And why aren't they 40+?) mobs in the next zone. Level 37 mobs in your appropriate zone will not not drop the mats you need, not yesterday, today or tomorrow. I do not believe the Dev's intended zone-skipping at 30-something. I don't believe the game intends players to skip a significant part of the story, just to level crafting - but how, wanting to play the part, can it be avoided?

Being level 35, 36, 37 and higher, fighting mobs of the same level should net the same loot table, regardless of zone. Thick leather should drop off all mobs of the appropriate level.

Players who are level 35+ should receive appropriate leather mats.

    I agree with the OP.

Though my Clothier and Blacksmithing skills are currently equal, I just realized that my 25th lvl character will soon need a nice new set of leather armor... and hasn't encountered any leather dropping creature yet. I was a bit low on lvl 16-24 mats for medium armor, but I have literally nothing for lvl 26. I assume I need to press deeper into my current zone and find some higher lvl mudcrabs, wolves, and others... but given I currently have almost 100 cotton and orcilum (sp?) processed, there is an imbalance.

I think upping the number of raw mats dropped from the current mobs, and possibly upping the probability of a drop would help. My current situation... Eh, I'll deal.

I have 4 stacks of ironthread I barely have 1 of ironhide, they need to increase the drop rate of leather, and when it does drop it needs to drop a lot more than just 3.

The solution is not getting leather from a static node but to be able to 'skin' an animal you kill. Presently you are supposed to get the skin from animals you kill randomly but out of 20 animals you get basically 1 skin if you are lucky.

This sucks........ only a fellow crafter feels our pain.

That would be a nice option, as found in other MMOs that shall remain nameless.

Actually, I'm starting to warm to the idea of a creepy, fleshy node that could be harvested for leather. I bet Sheogorath would grow leather plants.

Skinning would be great, or at least having your Clothing skill affect your leather related loot.

I'm highly in favor of a morbid Leather Scrap node however. "Daedric Worms" for instance, that spawn in higher population density under anchors maybe :)

Drops arent affected by skill level...
That was the suggestion, you illiterate.

Leather scraps were a problem but I kept farming and made due. However once I hit level 35 I knew I needed to start farming Thick Leather Scraps for my level 36 set of gear. I could not find Thick Leather dropping mobs in Malabal Tor and had to go to the next zone Reaper's March just to find some level 39 mobs that would drop said leather.

I still can't figure why a level 36 set of gear mats only drop off level 39 mobs. You would figure they would start dropping off level 34 or 36 mobs to be ready for when you can use the gear. Course that would not be so bad if Malabal Tor has some thick leather scrap dropping mobs.

My Nightblade character is being put on hold now. In Greenshade and killed 51 Crocs and dropped 12 Leather Scraps....

Sorry, not worth spending 30+ minutes hunting level 26+ creatures for random loot drops. Oricalcum Ores, Dwarven Ores, Cotton, Spidersilk, Beech and Hickory where easily harvested while doing quests.

Started a Dragonnight character, hit Grahtwood today, no problems making steel and Oak shield....makes my Nightblade feel really crappy now.

If you deconstruct everything you end up with stacks of leather. I know I felt like man wtf for the first two zones but since then I haven't due to drops and deconstructing everything. I know at 43 I just sold three 100 stacks of thick leather, I'm on the DC side.

There is no problem with leveling your craft as long as you put couple points in to kin eye perk. Obviously not every wild animal will drop its skin and as ppl said there are couple of places where you can farm leather more efficiently. Remember if everything would be widely available, game wouldn't have sense of accomplishments which in my opinion is one of most important bullet points for every mmo.

It's still painful, trying to scare up the resources for leather. Luckily, I've picked up a few decent set pieces, but I think I'm also going to have to shelve my Nightblade in favor of someone wearing heavy armor, and let them do the farming. Kind of annoying to see such disparity, as I've got stacks of metal, but only small piles of leather. I only use the leather for gear, not grinding, unlike the metal. And I decon all of the leather that I don't research.

I don't see the problem with leveling on the cloth items...I do understand and agree that there is less leather out there than cloth, but both can be used to level your skill, so it should be keeping up with your blacksmithing, unless you are dumping the cloth or not harvesting it.

I kill every single living creature I stumble across; my surname should be Mudcrab-stalker. Those deer that like to flee when you get close? I put a crossbow bolt in them as soon as they are in range. Darryl would be proud. And wolves? It's like a reverse of "The Grey".
It still doesn't afford me the resources to constantly upgrade my gear as I level, which was one of the things I had been hoping to do. My clothing level is on a par with my blacksmithing solely based on the use of cloth rather than skins, but even then the gear uses a lot of resources for a full set. Which is my point. It's not the levelling up part that's affected, it's the actual gearing up that is hampered. I haven't seen that in any other skill except for enchanting, which is a whole 'nother can of worms.

Right, I had that same issue in beta playing my NB, it was much easier to source cloth and mail, than leather. I hoarded my leather for myself and skilled exclusively on the cloth.
