leather availabilty needs to be addressed

Currently, those trying to make and level clothing for themselves using the medium armour line are at a disadvantage when it comes to farming the materials needed.

Currently both cloth and metal come from harvest nodes, while leathers come from certain creatures. Further, each crafting node drops 3 or more items, while you are lucky to get a single one from a creature. As a result, my blacksmithing is way ahead of my cloth crafting, and I am finding it hard to keep geared up as I level, while I have been giving away weapons and heavy armour like candy.

This needs to be redressed, and frankly, I cannot believe this went unnoticed on the PTS. I have to ask if you had any real crafters on there, in a year of testing this seems to have gone unnoticed yet it stands out like a sore thumb.
Regards Hexcaliber.

I feel your pain. I try to attack every wolf that I see, but often they won't drop anything.

Not that this is an ideal situation, but gather the jute and use it to level the skill. Then use the leather for crafting the items you want to use.

Actually, I've seen this thread a few times.

As I said on the last one, you... can't really have leather harvesting nodes. I mean, it comes from some kind of creature, it has to... that's what leather is.

What I have found in a few areas are very good circuits I can run to quickly kill imps and wolves (this is in Daggerfall currently, but I noticed some areas in the Dominion when I played in beta). In particular, Baelborn rock outside Daggerfall after about 20 minutes of just grinding through imps, I had about 50 rawhide. Not too shabby for some easy work.

But, until you can figure out how to get leather from a static node... it's just not going to work, and putting rawhide and its equivalents into the baskets, crates, etc. is just going to muddy all the other stuff that's already in all those items.

Just go kill some stuff. It's easy XD

Crabs on the shorelines drop them regularly, and deconstructing random items you find will add up relatively quickly. I've noticed that around level 20, it's harder to find the clothier items and this is annoying.

its not just wolfs, also some mobs drop more then one peice. i haven't put a lot of time into researching drop rates but it seemed ok to me. also scabrous's idea about jute is a good one.

Deconstruct medium armor. You'll be swimming in it too.

I am well aware of what comes from where, but the fact remains that the other armour types also drop from mobs just as often, and can be deconstructed for mats too. Nor would I suggest leather "nodes" should be available, however, creatures need to guarantee an item for each one killed, OR an increase in the number available when they do drop.

Nodes are guaranteed to drop three or more items, "guaranteed"; levelling your trade, you can increases the amount dropped. Meanwhile, many mobs drop nothing or a single item, getting a second is the exception not the norm. You cannot train a skill to guarantee crafting mats from creatures; therefore, unlike nodes, the relevant leather harvesting skill is affected to a large degree by rng. This creates the situation where the player needs to farm more mobs than they do nodes to acquire an equivalent amount for crafting, and that is unacceptable.

I have not even begun to take into account the dedicated crafters who are happy to harvest, but have no interest in fighting, while rare, they do exist in mmo's.

The solution is not getting leather from a static node but to be able to 'skin' an animal you kill. Presently you are supposed to get the skin from animals you kill randomly but out of 20 animals you get basically 1 skin if you are lucky.

This sucks........ only a fellow crafter feels our pain.

I have the same problem, getting the leather to make the armor, but I agree that leather shouldn't drop from plants, lol. This way to fix this is the way it happens in Skyrim, just have plenty of wolves around that you can kill and still get decent drops regardless of your level. I noticed that as a level 5, killing level 5 imps produced more leather than when I killed them at level 7. This is probably a proper thing for adventurers, mob drops leveling with your level. But it's murder for crafters who may not be adventurers as I got killed so many times killing things on my level that the armor repairs I needed to stay alive beggared me.

Some thought needs to be given by the devs as to the orientation they have in regard to crafting vs. adventuring. It should be recognized that many crafters like to live a peaceful existence making things adventurers want. Like many crafters, I don't mind killing a few wolves, but I don't have any desire to compete with high level adventurers. If crafters have a place in the game, the devs need to provide ways of getting materials that don't require serious adventure skills. The devs seem to have done a great job creating adventure quests and PVP environments. My question is, is there a place for crafters as well?

Yeah sorry I think there's enough if you can't find it why not swap something with them for it.

In fact at times I think we have too many resources a small run out can fill my bags to bursting with no issue at all.

This defeats the whole purpose, if harvesting everything you come across I guarantee you have more metal and cloth than you do leather after your "small run out". It does not matter that you may get some leather, you get far more of the other resources in comparison.

That would be a nice option, as found in other MMOs that shall remain nameless.

Actually, I'm starting to warm to the idea of a creepy, fleshy node that could be harvested for leather. I bet Sheogorath would grow leather plants.

@Hexcaliber indeed I do always end up with more Ore or even food. But I'm not trying to max craft everything in one go so I swap with other people. Work as a team.

Once we have maxed out these crafts we can swap a different way.

I have the same issue with Rune stones I've deconned dozens of Glyphs and I'm yet to get any Aspect runes, I have dozens of the others. But I see it as a challenge instead of feeling the game is broken and needs to be fixed.

Sometimes things are like that in RL we deal with them.

Skinning would be great, or at least having your Clothing skill affect your leather related loot.

I'm highly in favor of a morbid Leather Scrap node however. "Daedric Worms" for instance, that spawn in higher population density under anchors maybe :)

I don't see the issue. I'm leveling BS and Clothier. There's actually more raw mats for Clothier b/c it's fed by static nodes (e.g. Jute) AND drops from animals. If you're a med armor user just level your skill with the plentiful jute nodes and use your limited supply of leather to make your gear.

If you're finding a lot of cloth but not much leather (I'm having the same results), then take advantage of the fact that cloth and leather are part of the same skill. Level on the cloth, then use the leather to craft what you will equip. So far this has been enough for me without having to go out of my way to kill extra animals, though perhaps if you're making a full set every 2 levels it wouldn't be enough.

But I do agree that they should boost the drop rate. I think every animal in Skyrim dropped hides, which makes good sense unless you've turned it into a pile of ash. :)

Ever hacked at a animal with a sword or axe or say used a spell of flame on it's hide. If we did this what condition would the leather or hide be in. I like the drop rates myself and think they are reflective to conditions. I myself have had a lot of leather by hunting in game and deconstructing and sending that npc out for the 24 hour gathering as well (as per the skill).
What is hunting animals..work. It sounds like some are lazy players who don't want to go out and earn their mats. For those crafters that want to sit around the tanning or skinning clothing table and never leave, why don't you ask fellow players to trade for what they get as they quest around..simple answer.

I'm pretty sure this is why there aren't three trade skills for wearables, like Tailoring, Leatherworking and Blacksmithing. The fact that medium armour and light armour are combined in the one trade skill should have been a bit of a giveaway, to my mind. Level with Jute, make your actual armour with leather when it's time to upgrade.

To be honest, now that the game is live, I feel like you have an advantage. I find almost no nodes now compared to a couple days ago. People are more willing to run to a node and mine/pick it. Much less willing to kill something to get a drop.

I think people like Erahth (to name but one) have the right idea - it doesn't matter if cloth is more abundant than leather for leveling as they both level the same thing.

It would only matter if there wasn't enough to craft items you actually wanted.

The majority of my materials come from deconstructing rather than harvesting/killing. By the time my inventory is full I'm lucky if I've harvested 20 pieces of raw material, which gets me well below 20 refined material. I get so much more from the gear that fills my inventory of 110 far too quickly and the majority of it is medium armor for some reason.

Not to mention farming leather is extremely easy compared to the others. You can't "farm" ores or wood, whereas you can find a good spot to farm for hides no problem. If anything, I've been finding Clothing easier to level but that's because I'm willing to spend a couple minutes farming.

Of course they can't have "leather harvesting nodes," but they need to make leather more available. They either need to tweak the drop rates of leather armor vs other types, or increase the rate at which it drops off of animals (ie 2 scraps per kill average instead of closer to 0.5 scraps per kill average). I spent a good bit of time slaughtering wildlife earlier and still have about 25% as much leather as I do iron or jute. However the system works, it doesn't even out and they need to tweak the numbers to make it so.

  • pysgod1978b14_ESO
I haven't had a problem getting leather. If anything keep the leather the same or even raise it slightly, and drop the others down. Going on roughly a week now and already people are amassing fortunes off of just getting crafting materials and selling them. It's going to flood the market pretty soon the same way WoW's has always been. I would like to seem some competition between crafters, not have several thousand running around selling the same stuff as everyone else. Runestones and alchemy could use a slight boost perhaps, but not too much of one. I like the fact that we're not swimming in multiple stacks of potions everywhere.

Does the same type of leather drop from all levels of mobs? If not, one can easily out level the very mobs that the leather needed drops from. And once that happens, no more leather of that tier...

Yes I totally agree for a "skinning" option for those going for leather. It makes no sense that I get raw craps from an imp but I don't get anything from a deer...

I agree, the drop rate is very poor. I have killed numerous deer and wolves to acquire leather, but not much luck. I have Iron and Jute out the arse tho.

When you harvest jute or mine ores and you are pretty much guaranteed a drop of 3-4 items, with leather its a crap shoot. I would say that wolves only drop about <20% of the time and then that's only one piece leather.
