I used to lag constantly, and DC nearly every day. But not anymore! Heres one simple fix to try that will 100% fix your issue:
    ...
    ...
    ...
stop playing. I did. and I haven't noticed lag problems in weeks now!

    ---
but seriously, performance is terrible, seems to affect different people at different times with no rhyme or reason, and has minimal updates/acknowledgements in a 70 page thread from the past 5 and a half months. Be great if theyd make some sort of statement regarding it, but at this point, I've taken my wallet elsewhere.

yeah, stop playing is actually some pretty good advice!

i half-consider trying to sort the issue, but i feel like that's a daunting task with no solution. because it seems like a lot of people are having connectivity and performance issues. i see posts about people getting booted. maybe i'll try troubleshooting internet problems? i don't know

The issue is: most people who have troubleshot issues have all found nothing on their end that is causing these lag spikes. is this your case? maybe not. maybe you have a min spec issue, maybe your net has problems, and by all means, you should do your own due diligence and be sure you dont have problems on your end. however, as suggested by the numerous posts and 71 page thread regarding performance/lag, many of these issues are not client side. so.... if you dont have any glaring problems anywhere else in your computer/gaming/internet usage, its very safe to assume you are one of the many who are just getting royally kerfuffled by whatever is going on and the the ability to improve performance rests in ZOS hands.... which leads me back to my half-joking-but-really-its-kind-of-serious comment of.... just stop playing. its not worth the frustrations.

I do genuinely hope you are able to find a simple solution and improve your performance though.

But seriously, daily login reward, feed alt mount, logout.
Here $15, goat mount please. Not gambling or paying 45 : lol :

Not even doing that anymore, TBH. Time I waste logging into ESO is time I’m not spending on the other MMO I’m playing right now (that one has no performance issues — my ping is always 60-70 in that game). I’m now logging into ESO once a week to do writs and confirm “yup, still having ping spikes in the 400s while simply crafting.” When I stop seeing those horrendous ping spikes, I may consider logging in more than once a week.

I would suggest that you try nirsoft pinginfoview, which is free.
You can use this to see where the issue lies

set a ping to your router IP , a few web sites, and maybe the first hop on your tracert output to any popular web site.

    I'm feeling bad,

    It's becoming quite sad,

    That the game I play,

It makes me not want to stay.

    For the game I play,

    Has led the performance astray,

Trying desperately to keep the disconnects at bay,

The servers are no better than a bundle of hay.

I have a strong gaming machine and solid cable internet connection yet suffer fairly regular random disconnects on PCNA. I have several other games that play flawlessly and I think that pretty clearly rules out my rig/internet. There is so much I love about ESO that I fervently hope they are able to sort out the reliability problem(s).

It's weird isn't it though? That some people can play ESO flawlessly with inferior rigs and others with top notch equipment have such horrible issues!

I'm beginning to think the issue has to be between the player and the servers, it's the only thing that makes any sense.

Player A has a good stable route from themselves to the server, Player B does not, or am I simplifying it too much?

I did crash the other day BUT it was for hitting the message rate limit....... I was loading multiple of the same price items to a Guild Store very quickly at the time so I wasn't too surprised. :D

Cannot recall my last crash before that though.

Last week, I was getting many 'An Error Has Occurred' crashes, but this week my wife is getting them.

We use the same internet connection so It could be assumed that if it was our internet causing the error, we would both get booted. But that is not the case.

you know, there was a time when they released two zones a year, the big one and the small one, and 4 new dungeons. and players were kind of complaining that instead of releasing the small zone and releasing 4 new dungeons a year, zos should focus on bug fixing.

and then zos was like, you know, we're gonna do what the player base wants -- scale back on releases, and fix bugs.

they did one of those. guess which one

they barely did the other, or it was the same thing as before - fix one thing, break two others

I was able to raise my FPS to 240 and lower my ping to 48 by doing this and switching to GW2. My necromancer got an enormous buff as well! Haven't had a DC yet and maintenance required me to restart my client once. The process took 30 seconds. Speaking of which, my client and launcher no longer crash. Praise be to the Divines!

PC EU/PC NA. No issues for me, and even though it may be on ZOS's end(99 out of a 100 times it is on the user's end though), try troubleshooting your network. You never know if it may help.

Change the settings for or replace your network equipment and cables, update all your drivers(graphics/bios(careful!!)), check which programs are running on windows startup and shut them all down except for needed ones, make sure to use cabled internet for gaming as it is more reliable. Make sure your internet cables aren't near any powerlines or power outputs, if using wireless check if something may be interfering with the signal in any way. Maybe let a professional do all this/check all this, just to be sure.

Router settings that can disrupt your internet:
-On the router cabled and wireless can be set to re-build or re-make the connection every so often. Turn this off.
-On the router cabled and wireless can be set to find a stronger/better connection every so often, and switch to that new connection automatically. Turn this off.
-On the router, make sure it never discards any packages. Discarding packages is usually the default when the router is overloaded with packets. (overheating could also be a problem) (Note: A gaming router may help if you have a lot of internet traffic going on like downloading/streaming/gaming/etc at the same time, as it stores packets for sending when the router itself is overloaded.)
-On the router do not allow the bouncing of packets on both the LAN and WAN interface, this can cause network congestion.
-Make sure your router does not respond to WAN requests, your router should work on tasks for you, not everyone else on the internet.
-On the router, give enough bandwidth to your gaming computer/device. Make sure no other devices can change, use, or lower that bandwidth.
*Note: Not all routers will have all these settings, or have even more settings that can cause a connection to become unstable.*

Preventing your hdd or sdd or GPU from going into off mode or sleep mode in windows may also prevent some issues. Also make sure no programs are on auto-update, or connect to the internet without you having told them to. Make sure there is only one audio output device active, having multiple can cause issues(crashes/disconnects/audio issues).

There is a difference between a fast connection and a stable connection. Other games often do not require a stable connection, and are unaffected by very short internet outages. Try to check the internet for steps to ensure a stable connection.

PS: Be very VERY careful with updating/changing the bios, let a professional do this if you are unsure! Check the website of your motherboard manufacturer from which bios version your cpu is fully supported/stable before doing anything in the bios. And only update the bios if it really is necessary.
*Important to mention: The intel 13th and 14th generation cpu's can use too much power in the bios on older bios updates, going far over their powerlimits, causing all sorts of issues(lag/delay/slowdowns/crashes/out of memory errors/bluescreens/etc). Check up on this issue online to check if this may be affecting you and what to set the correct powerlimits to. (This issue was affecting me on a brand new computer at first also, until I manually changed the power settings in the bios to my cpu's real powerlimits. Again, be very VERY careful when changing or doing anything in the bios! Let a professional do this if you are unsure of what you are doing!)*

PPS: To stop playing is bad advice, in my opinion. As when the problem is on the user's end, they will eventually run into connection issues again in the future with whatever program/game they will be using then. It is better to troubleshoot connection issues and make 100% sure it isn't on their end, or possibly even fix these connection issues for once and for all.

This specific problem sounds like it could be a problem with bandwidth allocation or network congestion. Maybe even an overheating router or broken LAN port on the router.

Yeah the 999+ ping does happen on rare occasions to me too. Not sure why, maybe it's the ZOS servers or my provider or a faulty internet node somewhere in between(my guess is faulty internet node near ZOS's servers). But something important to note, which is also shown in the video: You were not disconnected or thrown to the login screen, despite the very high ping. If this 999+ ping happens to me, I'm never disconnected or thrown to the login screen either.
So it is doubtful that 999+ ping is due to the ESO servers, or is the cause of players being disconnected constantly. Like I said, the 999+ ping is most likely due to a faulty internet node somewhere.

… that time. It’s very common for me to disconnect after a massive spike like that. Not sure why you think it’s NOT a ZOS-end problem, just because there was no boot to login that time. It’s weird too that none of these “faulty internet nodes” seem to exist along the way to the servers of any of the other multiple online games I play, just ESO…

I cancelled my sub and haven't logged into eso in over 3 weeks but I post on here 5ish times a day.

    Why?

Because I want to follow through with getting change to happen to the performance. Old school ZoS was notorious for having a general mindset more or less of "just hope they go away" (complaints) so I'm making sure they don't just... go away.

The forum is hardly a “major” focus of mine. I keep checking in to see if there are any improvements, or if there have been any official announcements on the performance problem yet. I’ve spent several hundred dollars on this game over the years, so I’d actually like to be able to enjoy what I’ve purchased again.
