I log on around 13:15 and gold road (despite the event is dead) it never used to be this way. A lot of other zones were dead too. Where is everyone? Can't be an MMO without the MM. Where is everyone?! Can't find many players until late evening. Rest of the day/night is dead.

Most players are adults (have school/work/etc) and there’s not the same concentration of people across every timezone. PC/NA East coast, I can get on early on a Friday and game feels pretty empty because most people are at their IRL commitments. I can get on at night and game is active because people from the Americas are all done with work.

Server performance is causing most people to leave ESO and go to Thrones & Liberty.

My friend list used to have about 30-40ish people online anytime I was on - that is down to 4 during "prime time".

ZoS didn't prioritize complaints regarding lag/rubber banding for many many months and it's catching up with them now.

Technical Debt will do that to ya.

Just logged in to PC-EU to check. Lots of players in Vivec City, ported to Skingrad and ambled over to the daily quest givers and count at least 20 players there.

Is this yet another of those "game is dying" threads?

It's evening now, almost prime time. OP was logged in in the early afternoon. I think during that time, the server never wasn't really crowded (so in that regard not much changed), which makes sense as most people are working or at school/uni.

Personally, I do have the impression though that directly after chapter releases, the new starting area had been less crowded the past few years in comparison to how it had between Morrowind and Greymoor. Back then there were masses of people (and extreme lag sometimes making the game almost unplayable - which is why I still remember it), now, there's a bunch, but never as many. Although one can speculate about the reasons, of course. I know some people deliberately start weeks or even months later now because there's no q4 story dlc anymore.

I was using guild rosters to get around yesterday.
Most players were in West Weald or Vvardenfell, with a few spread across other DLC zones, or their player homes.
Few few players in base zones, which is different from a few weeks ago.

I had that problem last night when I was trying to fight the Spinner WB-- not another player around. With the other WBs, there were usually at least two or three other players there at the same time, sometimes four or more, which made the boss easier to handle. Last night I tried multiple times to solo Spinner but could not do it, so I ended up abandoning the quest. I think it's great that all of the massively-OP players who keep complaining about how everything is too easy have been getting harder and harder content to sink their teeth into (except, last year they complained about the harder content because they said the rewards weren't worth the effort), but I'm just a mediocre-to-sub-mediocre player who can't handle the harder content.

Well, it's not unreasonable to consider the server code and game code, plus possible janky server hardware (components may drift out of spec over time, and/or just lead to cumulative tolerance stacking poor performance).
Those issues can end up in a forced log-out, or kick, but you're right in your line of questioning, the servers as a whole sum-total entity are a serious issue, and the whole game infrastructure needs serious attention.

From the statements that the issue has finally been elevated, and people were added to the team, I'm under the impression that ZOX is only putting people in as temporary limited additional manpower to look at isolated issues.

I'd like to think that the added people were tops in the fields affected, but they might very well be just a few spare people who were between other tasks, or just temp part time hires.
We have no way of knowing, and we haven't been told that.
The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

It's probably also worth pointing out that ESO's shards/instances on one server are all connected, at least much closer than in "other MMOs" where servers are isolated and smaller. (And it's tech from the early 2010s.)

Personally I really want to play and log in and complete more of west weald on a character that hasn't done anything in there yet.... but I am just sooooo burned out with events, I can't even get myself to log in much anymore. Besides for the daily IA/endeavours/tickets.

And we have the explorer's event and witches festival coming... it's just too much.

ZOS needs to massively turn down the amount of events.

And the rest of this year, besides events? Battlegrounds for two teams instead of three teams? Two companions to level?

Depends on the time of day/night. When I'm on late PDT there are numerous complaints in zone chat about "where are all the people?" every night.

They are having trouble with the group events, WBs and incursions.

Leveling through zones, IA, dungeons, etc. Just to name a few things. Plenty of things to do in ESO, and still never run out of things to do.

Events(in combination with all the other daily/weekly things) are too much dictating what to do with my playtime, and feel bad when there is other stuff I enjoy doing more or want to do more instead of events/event zones.

I realize this will apply to (I hope) only a small percentage of the playerbase, but there are a lot of people in the SE USA who were adversely affected by Hurricane Helene.

I missed 3 days of the event due to loss of power, and still have no power at my house-- although I'm staying with a family member who has power and internet, so I can participate in the event again.

Others are not so lucky; I was told today that in some places the power might not be restored for a month or more!

There's no telling how many of the affected population might be ESO players, and since this game has a global playerbase, they probably represent only a tiny portion of the overall playerbase anyway.

I'm just saying, there are many possible reasons why the player count in West Weald might be lower than expected.

Okay, I understand. We will have to agree to disagree.

Earlier today, I did one quest in West Weald, got my gold box and two event tickets, and then spent time finishing the weekly endeavors in IA, and did some leveling of a new alt.

I collected my event rewards today, and the pet, mount, arms pack, crafting stations, and more are all nice things that I would not have gotten without the event. I'm enjoying the stuff I'm getting from these events.

Sad that this game is losing players. Zones are just deader and the "peak hours" become smaller and smaller. Probably doesn't help ESO that new MMOs are coming out such as Throne and Liberty. On top of that, you should check the steam forums. A lot of people have been posting about how they're leaving, and it does make you wonder why...
