    Hate Tales of Tribute?

Then we have the companion for you !

Zerith-va will require you to enter, learn and win a ToT daily as a part of his favour.

Yes!! We will make you play our vastly inferior card game whether you like it or not !

I was hesitant to get into Tales of Tribute before I met Zerith-var. But, I found that I genuinely enjoy the card game! It took a bit of research into some basic strategies to get me started, but I think I've found a Tales of Tribute playstyle that I enjoy.

I also didn't know about the existence of the Northern Elsweyr Defense Force daily quests before Zerith-var. I'm genuinely impressed that this one Companion has gotten me to try totally new parts of the game that I wouldn't have otherwise tried.

If you haven't done so before, you could visit Ashen Scar in Northern Elsweyr and do the two quests there. Minor spoilers:
They are about the fate of the Order of the Hidden Moon and Zerith-var has a couple of unique lines throughout the two quests, as well at least four unique lines when you talk to him during those quests (... though I have to admit that I hoped he'd have more to say).

It is not one game, it is learning the game, then winning the game. Trivialising it to, 'They just need to win one game' is disingenuous.

"People don't like" implies a general consensus when in reality, it's some, very vocal people, possibly even a majority of people, who don't like Tribute. So please, don't imply that you're speaking for everyone. It may not be incredibly popular, but though it has some issues, I love Tales of Tribute and I wish they would make it more available to play against even more challenging NPCs across the world. I wish they would give me more ToT content. Because people hate on it so much, I can't have that.

In this situation, I don't complain endlessly, I just get on with my life.

The point is, some people do not like it. So do not put achievements behind it.

Not whether people should or should not play it. There are enough vocal people who have expressed a dislike for it, that no achievement for the main game should be involved in this.

What if we had a companion that required you capture a fort in Cyro, or win 5 Battleground matches?

If achievements were created solely for activities every player liked, there'd be very few achievements.

The ToT requirement is pitiully easy to accomplish, and requires very little time. If someone doesn't like it, well, then they don't have to do it. But if they're willing to set aside their reluctance for a few moments, it's not like they're required to sacrifice a body part to accomplish it.

If that were the case, I would probably either not do it or I would do it begrudgingly. I'm not a fan of Cyrodiil but I understand that it's part of the game and it's going to be integrated into other aspects of gameplay. There are plenty of players who don't touch PvP but you don't see them brigading ZOS about it, do you?

I am not a fan of battlegrounds, but I really wanted a particular style that is only available through BG rewards, so I was on that grind until I got it. When I finally did, I stopped playing battlegrounds. It took quite a while, but I never once showed up on the forums to spew vitriol because I understood that it was just part of the game. I get that Tribute is a very different type of content from the normal game, but it is part of the game now, and just like I did with BGs you may have to deal with something you don't love to get something you want.

And as another commenter mentioned, it might be that other players, once they have had time to learn how to play, might find that they really do enjoy it in spite of the negative sentiment surrounding it.

Some people here acting like being asked to beat a single bottom-tier NPC at a minigame is the end of player choice.

It would have been nice if while gifting the companions to a friend of mine that it had mentioned ANYWHERE that it requires not one but two chapters to complete Zerith-var's quest achievements. It no longer matters now.. as that friend got ticked off at this lil tidbit and quit when he discovered it, and I don't blame him at all. It's put a bad taste towards the game in both of our mouths.

Also why don't we just make the next companion require the emperor/empress title, or triad achievements in all the veteran dungeons because after all, "You could just not do it!" Wow! Such an amazing solution! :o What ingenuity!

What do you mean by quest achievements? The favors? To my knowledge they need only High Isle for ToT. Am I missing something?

As far as I can tell, the achievement "Zerith-var's Favor" only has the High Isle Chapter requirement due to needing access to Tales of Tribute. Every other requirement for that achievement can be done in the base game, including the Northern Elsweyr Defense Force daily quests, which are part of the prologue to the Elsweyr Chapter and can be accessed in Grahtwood. You don't need the Gold Road Chapter at all, either, since Zerith-var is found in Reaper's March.

Remember that every favor achievement requires the specific Companion to be at your side when you complete these actions.
    • Companions cannot be by your side in Cyrodiil, so they'll never require you to become Emperor.
    • While triad runs in veteran dungeons could be done with your Companion by your side, you'll most likely have a full group of players (thus no room for Companions) so that's an unlikely candidate for a favor achievement requirement.

    As for ToT game requirement:

Normally Zenimax offers three Free ESO+ Trial weeks a year. (well.. there were cases 2 such promotions a year)
These are not guaranteed and i don't remember the case they were advertised in advance. They just happen by surprise.
Still we can hope for January-June-October schedule. Sometimes it is January-July-November.

We have chances to get Free ESO+ Trial week in November. (or in less fortunate scenario - maybe in January).
ToT is unlocked during this trial week, so you can unlock the game and start doing ToT dailies.
(ToT becomes frozen after free trial week ends and the player does not have High Isle Chapter).

    So, patience is the key.

At launch, you can acquire both new allies for free with an active ESO Plus membership or purchased with crowns from the in-game Crown Store. Once acquired, you can find and recruit them within the zones of Auridon (Tanlorin), and Reaper’s March (Zerith-var).

It's been a few days since launch, is there any knowledge on whether the "free with eso+" thing is temporary or not?
It's marketed as an "ESO+ Deal" which are usually temporary.

it's not marketed as having a limited time like the ESO+ deals in crown store showcases.
It also doesn't have a countdown.

it's basically dlc so it likely won't ever disappear

It kind of looks like those monthly ESO+ deal offers... And the wording of "At l;aunch..." also got me suspicious. I'd rather wait to get an ESO+ sub with the New Life Festival and get the new Companions then too...

So you asked a question, had it answered... and reject the answer anyway? Why bother coming here and asking then?

His third quest ported me into the Rimmen Necropolis & Orcrest Public dungeons in Northern Elsweyr. It definitely wasn't separately instanced.. as I saw the usual small groups of players running about killing bosses. Unless ZOS just happened to remove those two locations Chapter requirements..

Anyway the point is they said this companion is yours to keep once purchased from the crown store and failed to mention you'd never actually be able to complete their favor tasks without an active sub or further chapter purchases.

No, people is only the plural of person. Beyond that no number or amount is implied. If a general consensus was to be implied it would be "most" or "all" people. I'm thinking maybe companion achievements should be like endeavors. Maybe we get a list of ten things and have to complete seven of them. That way if there is an activity we hate we can skip it and not miss out on part of what is a major feature of this update.

I like ToT but have no interest in PvP whatsoever (same feeling as you have about ToT). We have furnishings and achievements in PvP areas. So, if I want them, I have to go there. There is a furnishing locked behind a trial. Many lore books are in trials and in PvP areas too. We also had a lead for the Hero of ... added to a trial this year. People did not like it too (myself included), but I wanted it, so I went there.

Besides, from what I see, you do not have to play with people for this achievement. Just play with NPCs for the daily.

This is exactly how I feel.

Here are the achievements I found for companions:

    Bastian:

Bastian's Favor is awarded for completing following list of tasks with Bastian Hallix as an active companion:

Visit Eyevea. It is accessible during fifth quest of Mages Guild storyline, The Mad God's Bargain, or afterwards by using portals in Mages Guild offices.
Read a book from any bookshelf
Complete a Mages Guild daily quest, given by Alvur Baren

    All good.

    Mirri:

Mirri's Favor is awarded for completing following list of tasks with Mirri Elendis as an active companion:

Visit a Daedric Delve or Public Dungeon.
Complete a Fighters Guild daily quest, given by Cardea Gallus
    Craft an alcoholic beverage

Again, all good, though the fighter's guild quest can be a bit difficult to do, because it is a dark anchor (as far as I recall)

    Ember:

Ember's Favor is awarded for completing following list of tasks with Ember as an active companion:

    Successfully pickpocket any Guard
    Visit any Outlaws Refuge
    Use a Counterfeit Pardon Edict
Fence (i.e. sell to a fence, not launder) an Epic-Quality item
Complete a High Isle Delve daily quest, given by Wayllod

Now we get into a bit harder. I am about as sneaky and pickpockety as a bull in a china shop. Pickpocketing a guard isn't going to happen any time soon, but I guess it is doable.

Isobel's Favor is awarded for completing following list of tasks with Isobel Veloise as an active companion:

    Accept a duel
    Visit any Undaunted Enclave
    Craft a candy provisioning item
    Interact with Lyris Titanborn
Complete a High Isle World Boss daily quest, given by Parisse Plouff

Here we have 'accept a duel' and 'high isle world boss daily' both of which require teaming up with other people, which isn't everyone's cup of tea.

    Sharp:

Sharp's Favor is awarded for completing the following list of tasks with Sharp-as-Night as an active companion:

    Go Fishing
    Visit a Hist Tree
Complete a Vvardenfell Hunt Daily Quest through Huntmaster Sorim-Nakar
    Craft a Poison
Complete a Telvanni Peninsula World Boss Daily Quest, given by Ordinator Nelyn.

Again, a world boss daily quest, and to my understanding, the world bosses have been steadily getting harder with each DLC, this means that most people are likely going to have to team up, which again, isn't something a lot of people want to do.

    Azandar:

Azandar's Favor is awarded for completing the following list of tasks with Azandar al-Cybiades as an active companion:

    Interact with an Ayleid Well
    Visit a Mundus Stone
    Craft a Tea Provisioning Item
Complete a Telvanni Peninsula Solo Daily Job, given by Ordinator Tilena.
Enter the Hollow City with Azandar

By contrast, these are pretty easy, simply crafting or going somewhere. The daily job looks like it is visiting delves to get items.

    TAnlorin

Tanlorin's Favor is awarded for completing the following list of tasks with Tanlorin as an active companion:

Successfully pick a lock with Tanlorin
Craft a furnishing item with Tanlorin
    Drink wine with Tanlorin
Complete an Alchemy Daily Writ with Tanlorin
Complete a Fighters Guild Daily Quest with Tanlorin
Gain a Vision in the Infinite Archive with Tanlorin

Most of these are simple, but the last one, while simple, is something some people absolutely do not want to do. I have heard of a lot of people who do not like the Infinite Archive and will not go there. Which means they either have to go there, go through the first arc and then get a vision, or they don't get the achievement.

Complete a Daily Quest for Zahari in Grahtwood with Zerith
Complete any Tales of Tribute Daily Quest with Zerith
Complete a Dark Anchor with Zerith
Visit the Bandaari Trading Post in Malabal Tor with Zerith
Offer a Donation to a Beggar with Zerith
Loot a Water Skin with Zerith

So, I don't see how 'tales of tribute daily quest' is any different than needing to do the infinite archive?

A lot of people dislike ToT, a lot of people dislike the Infinite archive, a lot of people hate needing to depend on others to do dailies (I have been sitting at a world boss before waiting for people to come, even put it into chat, and no one has come.)

So, I don't see how 'tales of tribute daily quest' is any different than needing to do the infinite archive?

the difference is in the necessity to have access to High Isle DLC.
(Infinite Archive is accessible even with the Base game only)

Ember and Izzy are bound to High Isle Chapter, so theirs demands for High Isle delve/WB quest are OK
Azandar and Sharp belong to Necrom DLC, so dailies in Telvanni Peninsula are OK

both Zerith-var and Tanlorin are not bound to the Gold Road or any other paid DLC and theirs recruiting quests happen in the vanilla zones.

one of Zerith-var's favors -- Complete any Tales of Tribute Daily Quest with Zerith directs players to the High Isle, as these is where two NPCs offering ToT dailies (Kishka and Marunji) are located. Without owning the DLC or being subscribed - player can not perform that, except during Free ESO+ Trial weeks. The said weeks occurrences are not guaranteed and they have no know exact schedule.

    That is the difference.

As ESO_PLayer123 said, I was talking about people who dislike ToT being forced to play ToT, while there are other actions required by the other companions that people have said they disliked (not in conjunction with the companions, but in general).

I will agree that needing the high isle DLC is a difference between all the other companions and Zerith.

If the original difference had been about needing to own the DLC from base game companions, I would agree that it is strange and perhaps not the best.

    Yes, this is quite understandable.
Though one of my friends in ESO is "achievemntoholic" and they do whatever achievements regardless if they like what they do or hate it. The Achievement points become the unstoppable driver.
It is not exactly the same about Zerith-var, but he, basically, points to a decision: if i am really a good Companion and you value me - do me a favor: play this boring card game for me! Well, just one daily.

i would refrain from discussing ToT, though i think the game is good. Two it's major inconveniences are:
    - it does not fit the fantasy universe well
    - we, players. playing versus each other many players tend to delay theirs moves for entire 90 seconds, making the pace of the game totally unbearable. i don't live that long to spend 25..30 minutes for one match. Though there are, of course, good players displaying good sportsmanship.. but we don't know in advance.

You don't have to play against other players for the achievement as far as I know. I will have to check when I get into game, but UESP just says a ToT daily, and there are two dailies, one of them against players, one against NPCs.

As for fitting into the fantasy universe, that is subjective. I would rather have something like ToT than having a board game like Monopoly (and I mean literally like Monopoly) or solitaire, or yet another clone of poker.

I am not saying that there aren't other types of card games that wouldn't have worked, just that I personally don't feel that ToT is too out of place. It uses aspects of the ingame universe, and I really don't see what is that 'unfantasylike' about the rules/gameplay.

So, I still don't see why ToT (outside the fact you need an extra DLC that you don't with the other companions) is all that different from some of the achievements for the other companions, because it still comes down to having to interact with a mechanic that you personally dislike.

Again, I have seen a lot of people who dislike IA. I know a lot of people hate needing to rely on other players. Some people really dislike PvP.

I was hoping on official confirmation that getting the companions for free with ESO+ was not just at launch and for a limited time, because I'd hate to assume they'll still be free by the end of December only to find out it actually was a limited time offer and to have missed out on them.

Besides, I'm not rejecting the answer? I'm explaining my reasoning why I'm questioning the timing of the offer and why I'd like to know.
