Anyone know how to disable this purple square in housing mode?

Are you using the EHT addon? That looks like EHT's gridlines.

If you hover over the EHT text in the lower right corner, it should expand upwards, or maybe you click on it? And then uncheck the gridlines.

I'm doing this from memory, so it may be different than I describe, but I'm pretty certain that's a feature of EHT!

That is correct. Those are the EHT gridlines.

We can show vertical or horizontal, or we can not show either. I had to toggle both off because it was making it hard to see what I was doing.
