Every new pointless tiny achievement we get I feel insulted by. AWA killed dungeon endgame. That’s not worth adding achievements that serve no purpose. There’s no motivational purpose to getting the survey achievements, or the hireling achievements, or the larceny per zone achievements. There was motivational purpose to individual character HMs and Tris and Challengers. But it’s gone and dead forever for this. Salt poured right into the flesh wound, ZOS. #SaveDungeonEndgame

If their intention was to add more achievements to complete for those who didn't like AWA- they really missed the mark. All of these achievements completing retroactively because of something I did several years ago are pretty pointless when what I'd really like is an optional, individual character journal/record.

Also...the system must be recording what quests the character has completed on the back end anyway for the system to know what they have, and have not done...so wouldn't all that data still be there? (minus the achievements that had nothing to do with quest completion, of course)

I'm not going to lie, inflating my account data with achievements for things like completing a survey feels like they're going back on their original intention of pairing down the database. It might be fun for newer players but...really? Surveys? XD

I like the larceny achievements, because they at least hook into Thieves Guild, and give Thieves something to do (albeit, not much, but something)

Nah, some data is missing. I've gotten an achievement for doing my "first" blacksmith survey map today... And obviously, I'm a "social adept" because I have accepted some guild invite... years ago. The whole thing comes across as super strange to me. Like, there's info stored that has no big meaning for a playthough at all (number of received hireling letters?!), while things that would be interesting has obviously not been stored.

No titles or any other rewards, but these things show up as achievements in the achievement list. I got a good dozen after logging in today. Some do make some sense (like one big achievement summarizing all WB or dungeon or main quest achievements of all regions of the past 10 years), some (like the hireling mail thing)... less.

As for titles, I still want an Apostle title for completing CWC :p

With the database savings from removing all of the duplicated achievements across characters, they now have oodles of space for new achievements, I guess.

That weirded me out as well. They were concerned about the load achievements had on the database...yet they stored data in relation to the fact that I've received 500 hireling letters...? Just. Why. It seems like such a meaningless achievement compared to other things that would have been useful. And meaningless data to retain.

I do think the latest achievement isn't reading some hidden "oh, you got X number of hireling messages!" as much as it's looking at the stored messages and just the number you're on.

Each hireling message is unique, so all the game needs to know is which is the last message you got. If your last message is #482, then it'll send you #483 at the reset, and so on. As such, the achieve is then just looking at which number you're on. That's also likely how the new Eidetic Memory for the mails works by just showing the text from all the messages.

The surveys though have to be done from scratch since there isn't something that's tracking surveys you've done. It's not like you get the surveys in a specific order and can tell where you are by just which one you have.

@tomofhyrule That explains a lot, thank you for clearing that up! I admit, I didn't think of the messages themselves and the fact that they are unique. It's been quite some time since I paused to read them.

lol I love reading them. I'm sad that Gavin Gavonne stopped sending them, because his were always hysterical to read. I also very much enjoy Urbek inventing the printing press and the whole character development Orbinor's gone through. Pacrooti is just as annoying as he is in the Crown Store though, but he did get me to laugh a few times.

Someone definitely had fun writing all of those stories.

Are you sure about that? The messages are not all unique, but at some point, they repeat. I would have guessed that there's a counter until that last message, and if you reached the last one, it's done. And it's much lower than 500.

I think the achievement that I saw flash by yesterday is for the total hireling mails. My recollection is that each crafting line has around 300 of them, with the last one being repeated. I have no idea whether the last one being repeated for years counts for the achievement.

Obviously, the game is storing the current hireling mail for each skill line so that it knows where it last left off, but we don't know if there is also a counter for total hireling mails in addition to that. If there is a total count, we don't know if it has always been there, or was recently added and is based on the position of each skill line in the mail list at the time it was created.

we got a hireling category in Eiditic Memory in update 42, that's probably how the hireling achievement knows which hireling letters you've read.

and the new 10 year anniversary achievements will likely get rewards attached to them in update 44 or later just like the Adventurer Across A Decade achievement from u42 which had the skin gold and black skin.

there are still way fewer achievements now then when every account could have 18 repeats of every achievement, 36 if they had the max characters on both regions.
So it probably is helpful to zos' databases to have nearly all achievements be accountwide.

Missed opportunity. The one achievement that's conspicuous in its absence is for harvesting fish bait, with the associated 'Grandmaster' or 'Master' title which, I expect, 95% of all players would select, if available. The other 5%, of course, would be liars.

Or "Queue Balled" - waited in queue for cyro for 1+ hr only to be flattened under a lag-inducing ball-group.

Or "All the risk - no reward" - survived a gank-attack in IC while carrying 5k+ tel-var stones, kill the attacker and get <10 tel-var stones for your troubles.

I'm not lying when I say that I LOL'd a little while ago when I proc'd an achievement for doing a survey (one of perhaps a thousand or two over the years) and doubly LOL'd for it proc'ing on my newest toon, who has absolutely done the fewest surveys simply because of date of creation. He just happened to be the active toon when I noticed an abundance of surveys in the Bank and decided to clear them out. He'll try not to knock his shoulder out of joint while patting himself on the back for finally getting an account-wide achievement.
I'm fresh out of outrage, but I could muster up some amused annoyance if required.

Idk, I don't mind the new achieves. I think they're nice for people with a slower game style which is more relaxed or about just chilling. They made my wife happy because she likes to farm mats and relax after pvp. So I'm glad she enjoyes it. I'm sure other players do to.
