You can not do the Mage Guild and Fighters Guild quests in a group. They have nerfed the difficulty considerably though.
I really struggled with this quest during beta until I realized I need to kill the bubbles that float on the ground, which heal Doshia. It is not an easy fight, but if you take your time you can do it.
My thoughts are, this is an MMO, not a single player game. While I think content should be doable on your own, to actively prevent content from being done with friends is not right. It is my biggest gripe in FF14, and apparently will be here in ESO as well. When I want to play solo I can go back to Skyrim, I shouldn't have to do things here alone.
Note: I have done this specific quest, both in Beta, and live.
