Hey everybody,
Im Stautmeister and id like to share with you my experience and some tips and tricks that might be helpfull to both new players and veterans. Unlike the posts already made this is just here to brighten up your gaming experience.

Quests and leveling:
1.
Go back to the starter island and do the quests there. For some it provides a backstory (AD) for others its just really good to get the hang of the game. Questing there will get you some nice experience, lore and will ensue that you start your city quest with a healthy experience lead.
Second bonus, less people in the starter islands than in the main city meaning incidentally less lag.

2. If you do not do the starter islands and dont explore the entire map there is a chance you will fall behind the recommended level. To prevent this: see tip 1.
But also, if you see an empty spot on the map, check it out. Often when i found myself outlevelled id have this empty spot where i was able to pick up 3-4 quests!

3. Enter the public dungeons, its so crowded they are pretty easy to finish, offer skyshards, new quests and achievements (the torch)

4. Is a quest bugging out? Try /reloadui /stuck or relogging till you get in a "zone" where the questobjective is still fresh! While annoying, spamming zone chat about bugged quests isnt helping anyone. Worst case, come back a later day.

5. Enjoy the story, you can through everything, but the decision making influences rewards and how many stuff you need to do!

6. Get persuasion and intimidate from the mages guild/fightersguild for questing. They help you out a lot, and if your a min/maxer you can always respec later on.

7. at level 10 go to cyrodil, do the tutorial. Easy skillpoint even if you dislike PVP!

8. Do the dungeons! Amazing loot, amazing experience and they are extremely cool!
Player Guilds:

1. Join them, you can be in 5 guilds at the same time! Check out the recruitment posts and the forum. Especially guild banks and stores are a major boon because a lot of people hand out their spare stuff for free.

Personally i joined a pve guild, a pvp and a crafters guild. All the benefits!

2.Dont beg, be a *** etc

Crafting:

1. Find someone that levels the same crafting proffesion as you, trade your created stuff, deconstruct. Optimal results without the extra cost! (deconstructed own crafts rewards less)
2. Store your materials in the bank
3. Is your bank running full, store the mats of a single proffesion on an alt! (deposit in bank, take out of the bank with alt character, profit) you can do the same with vanity items.
4. Research, everything. Every workstation provides a research, be sure to have them running all the time. Advised however is to focus on researching 2 traits of every piece to start specialising after (for armor crafters) Personally im a 2 handed weaponsmith and i just keep researching 2 handed sword traits :)

General:
1. Pick a playstyle, class is irellevant. Im playing a 2 handed templar but i could have been a 2 handed nightblade or sorc as well. The flexibilty is amazing, dont get stuck in what you think you can do, you can do everything!
2. Want to level a second skilline or weapon? Switch them out before handing in quests, massive xp and easy leveling :)
3. Explore, Explore, Explore See an empty spot on the map, check it out. Skyshards, new quests, special mobs everything needs to be found on your own!
4. Respect others/ Especially on a multilangual server it is to be expected not everyone speaks english. You can however switch your chat channel to a single language only, if this annoys you!
5. Find a stylebook? Use it or sell it for major cash :)
6. Repair, unlike other games the amount of armor gained from dmgd items is significantly lower.
7. Wear all 3 types of armor. 5 from your major preferences, 1 and 1 of the others. This lets you level all armor lines, in case you want to switch roles in the future!

If people add more tips il be sure to credit them and add them to this list (other categories allowed :))

http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/86022/top-10-tips-for-leveling-new-characters#latest

1: With your first skill point equip a weapon and a weapon skill straight away (super obvious but super important).

2: With your next 3 skill points equip one skill from every class line (start getting xp for all class skill lines straight away, you might think one or two aren't that good but trust us all the passives are great at high levels and you want to get that xp up as quick as you can so you have more choice and freedom later on).

3: Equip Soul Trap (world skill). You are given this skill for free upon completing the tutorial dungeon for a reason: If you don't have it and you need it you will cry. Buy level appropriate empty soul gems from the mages guild asap: you use trapped souls to revive yourself (and others) when you die and also to recharge weapons. Soul Trap is also a handy ranged damage spell early on, though later on it become purely a utility and so you'll never need to morph it.

4: Equip at least one piece of each armour type (start getting xp for all of them straight away, for eventually the passives at high levels are all fantastic). You will probably choose the type you want to master later on but for the first 20 or so levels its great to get all the bonus xp while you decide. Most people decide to go with a five of one type + two of another mix of armour eventually as it gives the best combination of passive rewards.

5: Increase your inventory size (it only costs 400 gold the first time). Find a pack merchant and just do it (there is one in almost every town).

6: Get a Boon (from a mundus stone). Get the first one you find (because you can) and then once you find more choose the one you need (you can only have one active at a time).

7: Don't morph skills straight away. It's tempting I know but your skill lines only get xp if skills from that line are on your skill bar so having two umorphed skills from the same line equipped will level that skill line up much quicker than having just one morphed skill. Holding off the urge to morph and customise you skill load-out early on will be rewarded by far more xp to all your skill lines and will allow you to keep some skill points around to fill up you skill bar asap and for all those great passive skills (and if later on you decide you don't like an active or want to try out a new one you wont have wasted skill points in the old skill by morphing).

8: Get a heal. There is no trinity in this game, ever character has a self heal or life steal skill (or at least can learn to make themselves awesome potions). This is so important when you are solo-levelling (and also really helpful if you're playing in a group - you'll make the healer far more effective on the whole group if you can heal yourself some of the time). The amount of death you will avoid by having even the smallest way to restore some health is undeniable.

9: Get Intimidate and Persuade. The first passive skill in both the fighters guild and mages guild skill lines give you the option to intimidate and persuade NPCs which greatly improves quest efficiency (by allowing you to skip stages of a quest or receive extra bonuses/rewards from NPCs). Even if you never use a mages or fighters guild skill take both these passives early on (after you have filled you skill bar with actives first) to greatly improve your questing efficiency, both skills are available the second you join the respective guilds (you can join both guilds right away).

10: Deconstruct everything! Money is mostly obtained from quests and is more than enough to repair/buy materials while you level. The xp and resources you get from deconstructing are invaluable and help you level up a craft skill (or three) from the second you start adventuring. You'll probably only realistically max out two crafting skills skill points wise but that doesn't mean you cant max out all your skills through deconstruction (though watch out for the deluge of crafting items if you choose multiple skills at once, bye-bye inventory/bank space). Deconstructing items not only give you all the resources you need to craft (you will never need to farm again) it also gives three times the xp of making the same item. So dont craft to level, deconstruct to level. This game is geared towards a player being able to make the best items in the game for themselves so get a foot in the door and start deconstructing early and then choose what you want to make yourself and never buy an item at a shop again (you'll save a mint sticking to home-made items and loot). Alchemy and provisioning do not support deconstruction.

Bonus Tip 1: Get all the skyshards straight away whenever you enter a new zone (the above ground ones are easy to get without a fight and getting them when you first enter a zone ensures you have the lay of the land and will have discovered many various wayshrines by the time you start questing. Once you have the right level/gear/group you can sweep up all the underground ones before you leave the zone.)

Bonus Tip 2: : The fastest way to level up a skill line: have multiple skills from it equipped and then hand in quests, completing quests gives you the absolute most experience (quest xp translates into skill xp for all you skills and then a boost from every active on your bar to its own skill line.). Once you hit level 15 and get a second bar you then have the option of having your "main bar" (which you use in combat) and a "levelling bar" (which you switch to quickly before you talk to anyone to unload all that conversation and quest experience into the skills and skill lines you are trying to level up.

Bonus Tip 3: If you find you are always running out of inventory space make another chanter. All you character share a bank and so you can withdraw a ton and dump it on your new guy making plenty of space for your main (you can skip the tutorial cave on all your new charters and start off right in town). You can have up to 5 character per account per server and making a new one can be much cheaper than spending gold to upgrade you inventor/bank.

PS: Don't spend money on travel. Ever. Walk to the nearest wayshrine and you can use it to travel anywhere on the map that you have discovered for free. So much money to be wasted by impatience. Take the time and save your money for repair costs. You will thank me.

I would also like to add that the grouping tool is pretty nice even for general quests in the world. Use it :)

Question: I did go to Cyrodiil in beta, but I went on a whim and never saw a tutorial. Where is the tutorial and how do you gain it?
Behold the great Oak. Just a little nut who stood his ground.

Very thoughtful. I'm glad you posted this because earlier someone made a post about being "so" bored. This is a game that should be impossible to become bored at. You can do anything you want, literally.

    4. Respect others/ Especially on a multilangual server it is to be expected not everyone speaks english. You can however switch your chat channel to a single language only, if this annoys you!

Not everyone understand this so you SHOULD do something.

The zone chat should be renamed "multinational" or whatever and default chat should be the same as game language choice.

So bored to read the language police and insulting remarks about my country and I don't want to quit because I CAN read and write in english and some messages are interesting (for informations or for join party without ppl thinking their language is the only one).

We need a clear policy ingame for this chan!

    Please.

It is my belief that General "Zone" Chat you can say whatever you want in whatever language you want. The specific chat channels for languages are there for those not wanting to be confronted with other languages.
I wonder how this works for the american server, im assuming they have different languages there as well?

PS. im fluent in english and german and can understand french, so generally i have no issues with people speaking other languages. Then agian, the european mainland has always been more inclined to multilinguality ;)

Collect all Enchanting materials and sell them in the Guild Store!
If the price is fair you will sell them quickly and make a lot more money than selling glyphs and runes to NPC vendors. I usually sell runes and glyphs for around 50g (lvl40 area) and most of the time they have all been sold by the time I get back from work.

You will also help out Enchanters and I believe they can use a little help ;)

    Some additional things to consider:

    1. If you haven't already done so try playing more than one character through level 10 or so, especially the races and classes you don't think you will like or that you don't think will fit your play style. You'll be glad you did.

    2. Same goes for trying out different weapons and class skills lines. Try each one for at least one quest as your are starting. You will probably want or need abilities from each of your class's skill lines anyway, and there are only six major weapon styles, so give them all a whirl.

    3. See suggestions #1 and #2. I have a veteran level character and I keep surprising myself by trying new things. Besides, who you think your character should be and how you enjoy playing can change over time as you get more experience with how the game feels.

    4. Don't be paralyzed with indecision over "wasting" a skill point. Experiment! You can respec the points later if you really feel some choices weren't worth it. Besides, there are still hundreds of skill points left after level 50 so you will have plenty of chances to keep expanding and experimenting.

    5. Don't forget you have an "ignore" command for the people who really annoy you in zone chat. Enough said.

    6. If you are constantly picking up new armor you like from drops, you can save on repairs by just equipping new items as the old ones wear out. The repair bills really add up so save where you can. But whether you replace or repair, the game gets much harder if you don't have decent armor.

    7. Practice blocking, dodging, interrupting, and moving during combat. Even at level 1-10, where you can often get hit by a special attack and keep fighting, pretend like each special attack is a one-shot killer. You will need to be good at this at higher levels. And you may discover of refine your combat style in the process (see suggestion #2). I went from mostly medium to mostly heavy armor and added a restoration staff in my second weapon slot after trial and error.

For those who aren't sure, when a special attack is going to be launched the area of effect turns red on the ground as a circle, cone, or rectangle. If you can run out, OK, but often you have to dodge (double tap a direction key) because just running (and especially just jumping) doesn't always work. Special attacks get faster at higher levels.

If a special attack can be blocked, little white lines emanating from the attacker appear as it powers up. These are often seen for two-handed weapon attacks. To block, hold the right mouse button.

If a special attack can be interrupted, little red lines around the attacker show it powering up. These are often seen for bow abilities and spells. To interrupt such an attack, do a block (hold right mouse button) then press the left mouse button to perform a bash. Don't try to click them both at the exact same time because this often fails.

If you successfully block or interrupt, the attacker will be staggered for a few seconds. Immediately hold your attack button down to do a power attack for extra damage and knock them down. Be aware that dodging, blocking, and bashing all cost stamina. Not all special attacks can be blocked or interrupted but all can be dodged.

    8. Every class and weapon style seems over or underpowered to someone depending on how it is used and by whom. Don't worry so much. Just find what works for you, invest time and skill points, and have fun. If you want to do melee, either use tougher armor or a shield spell to stand toe to toe or use medium armor to dodge and roll. All classes can be set up to tank, deal damage, or heal, but you have to consider what weapon, skills, and armor compliment each role. And practice those combat moves!

    9. Lots of people who post on forums complain, but don't let that lower your expectations. Most people who play don't spend lots of time posting about how awful this or that is, so don't let it keep you from trying something yourself.

    10. Don't be afraid to ask for help. And if you get rude answers from some people, see suggestion #5.

Join a crafting guild and meet a player or two that you can swap crafted items with. Deconstructing another players items will yeld you more exp then your own, this is especially helpful with Enchanting because it's such a slow leveling skill line once you have learnt all the runes.

Even if you're not a healer don't be scared to use the restoration staff, it has a passive to restore your mana on every full attack. This is extremely useful if your skills are mana heavy and your mana regen isn't cutting it.

--- Another way to travel free is to click on a guild member's name and choose to go to player. Fast and free- and I've discovered new locations that way. You will go to nearest wayshrine.
--- If inventory is full and no bank is close, you can mail things to someone you trust and they can mail them back to you. Don't take them from the mail until you get back to the bank, and they can stay in your mail for -temporary- storage.
