How did the year of performance go?

So I've returned to Cyro, against my crying keyboards deepest wishes, just to find out how outrageously horrible Cyro been taken care of.
-What happened to the year of performance?
-What do you all players think?

You forgot that 2017 was the year of performance.

    From February, 2017.

    Hey gang!

As you saw in Matt’s 2017 roadmap, we are making Cyrodiil performance evaluation and fixing a priority this year. We want to make sure that Cyrodiil is a great PvP experience for everyone. Over the last year, we’ve made some good strides towards refining server performance across all campaigns, and we will continue down that path.

When looking into Cyrodiil issues, we definitely see (both in-game and through monitoring) situations where client and server performance degrade significantly when under high load. The small incremental changes we’ve made over the last year have helped, but they alone are not enough. So, we’re going to change our strategy a bit – which is the point of this post.

Simply put, Azura’s Star (the non-Champion Point campaign) runs much better, more efficiently, and is overall a much better PvP experience than the standard campaigns such as Trueflame or Haderus. Now that we’ve had a significant population density in Azura’s Star, we strongly suspect what has been theorized for a long time: Champion Rank passives and abilities are causing too much server load, especially in situations like Keep battles where there are tons of players in one place.

Because of this, we are going to run a series of PvP performance tests, and because it is impossible to simulate PvP load on our internal test servers (or on PTS), we will do this on all live servers on the dates of February 27 – March 6. This is not something we take lightly, and it is important that we evaluate performance when the server is under real-world load situations.

Our first test will be set up as follows:
    • For a period of one week, all Champion Points will be disabled on all Campaigns on all platforms and megaservers
    • During this time, AP gains in all Campaigns will be doubled, both to compensate for lack of CP and also to incentivize players to PvP so we can record as much data as possible
    • Campaign durations and leaderboards will not be adjusted during this week
We encourage all players to continue their PvP activities in their respective Home, Guest, and Friends campaigns – we will be taking feedback and monitoring data on a daily basis during this test, and look forward to reading your constructive posts about server performance during the time of the test.

The results of this test will determine the next course of action for refining Cyrodiil server performance. Thank you for your perseverance and patience – we thoroughly appreciate your time, efforts, and feedback!

Thanks again, and see you in Cyrodiil!

And in this thread in response to "WA WA WA, were working on it" gate, there is this thread....that was posted in the general discussion forum instead of the PvP forum for some reason.

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/595442/eso-pvp-update-january-2022#latest

In this thread they make it clear that we should not expect any performance improvements until sometime in 2023, and that we must silently accept things as they are until....until when exactly?

In summary, ZOS has been telling the player base the same, apparently factually inaccurate story for over 5 years now. Nothing has changed in that time except massively lower population caps and worsening performance.

Year of performance? I think we're well into the "Half Decade of Performance Improvements"

Strange. I don't notice any improvement.

Time goes more slowly over at ZOS because they are working at close to the speed of light :D

Was coming back because Cyro is nice, can't complain much about the layout and what's usually going on in Cyro. Ballgroups, 1vX, 1v1 etc, all nice PvP and PvG combat.

But when the spell doesn't cast on +8th click it's just ridiculous.
Usually play w guildies, and that's fun, but damn that lag. I don't mind dying +100 times in a row, but when my skill doesn't pop, with the technology available in todays gaming industry, it's annoying.

The point I tried to make was that the lag utterly destroys the PvP and it becomes only about one thing. Your patience as a consumer (gamer). An otherwise fun PvP experience is completely pissed out in a river, and the only challenge left for the player is for how long can you stand it.

Yeah and it's been working. As we all can tell.

edit: A solution could be to minimize the area of which the calculations are made, basically shrink Cyro 2/3 and open IC so we all fight on a donut. Whatever makes spells pop on max 3 clicks whilst maintaining the tasty PvP

It's been awful.....literally unplayable without a lot of frustration, thus negating the point of a "game" as entertainment.

To play devil's advocate a bit - they mostly spent that year on client performance. And to that end I think it succeeded... eventually... like two years later. Instead of getting 5-10 frames per second I see it can usually stay around 30-40 which is a significant improvement (these numbers are for worst case scenarios for me i.e. massive keep fights in Cyrodiil). The insane load screens (especially when keeps where breaking down or being repaired) has also seemed to be mostly fixed. Of course there are some users here and there complaining about low frame rates and micro loading screens but compared to the wide-spread issue it was before this is at least a lot more understandable.

** And now back to our regularly scheduled programming **

But server-side performance is as bad as it's ever been and worse. They've massively neglected it for years and they are only now looking into fixing it because this house of cards appears to be threatening the stability of the whole game at this point. Make no mistake, that post linked above might have talked about pvp performance improvements. And if and when they get the work done it might even provide that. But that wasn't the reason they finally bit the bullet and started work on these issues.

They keep adding new zones and new calculation heavy proc sets to the game without investing in more server resources.

What do people think is going to happen?
