Wraithstone performance downgrade

To me, wrathstone update started to cause flickering jacked edges everywhere, its damn annoying. Any way to fix this? And yeah fps drops, ping spikes, bit longer loadscreens.

    Hey all,

Do you happen to remember the exact day this started happening? Is it constant, or does it only happen in certain zones/while doing certain things?

The game has started deteriorating for me since IC was released. The ping to the servers was still fine, but I noticed by fps dropping, so since then I've had to lower my graphical settings with every major update. I've run out of settings to turn down, so God knows what I'm going to do with Elsweyr, or if it will even be playable.
Then Came Morrowind. With Morrowind both my fps AND latency started to take a hit. In Wrathstone it's unbearable. I log on for 10 minutes, see a 60-100 ping, yet it feels like 999 and log off.
Murkmire is a no-go zone for me. I get motion sickness from the screen slowly turning around and then catching up (it won't be screen tearing as vsync is on).
And I mean Cyrodiil, do I really have to elaborate? I'm getting more spontaneous load screens than usual, and performance at prime time is impossible to deal with unless you're running in a zerg just light attacking stuff.

Word on the street is, Elder Scrolls Online performance is a parody. Kind of like FO76 and bad launches, or EA and loot boxes. ZOS really needs to spend time sorting out these optimizations, because it's getting out of hand. As I said, it has been getting noticeable worse over a period of time.
Stop listening to the folks who live next to the megaserver and own $4k super computers saying "It's fine :-)". Listen to the people with the minimum required specs to middle range. They are the ones who feel it the most, and they can tell when something is amiss.

I used to think ZOS cared about ESO and its players. But the more I'm seeing you milk the crown store and just push out paid DLC, all the while watching performance take a nosedive, I'm really not so sure anymore.
All I can say is, I hope you prove me wrong. I really do.

It's very simple, ever since the wraithstone update performance on PC-EU has gone down
    • Load Times have increased from 10-20 seconds to 2+ mins
    • Adverage latency has gone from 90-110 to 150-200
    • FPS has gone from 120+ to barely 35+
    • NPCs take upwards of 2 minuets to appear
    • PvP even in battlegrounds is literally impossible
    • Vendoring anything has gone from basically instant per item to ~2 seconds per item
    • Just standing still watching other players walk around they are teleporting left, right and bloody center
    • joining a group now takes 5+ minuets of waiting

Gave it a short while to see if the issues would smooth out, but alas they have not
so @ZOS_GinaBruno can we get a statement on what..exactly has happened in regards to the server..I mean, did the data center flood? is there heavy snow? are they now using windows 8 on the server?

Everybody I have asked in game has reported similar issues, so what about you lot? anything happened there?

Updated addons and it fixed it for me

You should look at your PC or connection, the game is fine.

    It's not just him.
Other players are having similar issues since Wrathstone Update.

Dunno, it's weird. I mean if really game got sme issue, why not all of us get the same thing ?
Hope for them ZoS will look at.

    I hope so too.
There are many issues with game performance.
Just typing this after my 6th crash in PC EU Vivec in the last 45 minutes.
It happens in large battles, near keeps/outposts.

Agree on this, when I play I got DC sometime for no reason and have to log again.
But from what I've seen until now that the only issue I got, maybe I'm just lucky

Hear that everyone?! Just update your addons and the game will run flawlessly. Man, if only I had known it was Map Pins and DarkUI, my only 2 addons, causing all this trouble! I went from 20 fps to 120 fps! My ping to the server, which obviously client-side addons meddled with, are no longer a problem.

I've rarely seen my ping go below 300 ever since Wrathstone on PC/NA, it sits around 320. It used to be about 250-ish.

EU was already in the red for me, but it does spike over 400 a lot more than it did pre-patch.

This isn't the first update that's done this to me but this is more severe than it has been. I'm really hoping it'll go down soon.

This happens to me every time new content drops.

There is the new addition of menu lag though. Whenever I claim items from an email, there is a 2 second delay to claim them....same thing with picking up drops in dungeons. The frame rate drop after using a wayshrine is lasting 300x longer though...I hate that choppy robotic walk :'(

As with any PC game there is no way to make a game that can work with the many variable systems out there; so whilst somebody may not have issues that maybe because their system is optimised for the game whereas mine might not be.

So differing performance issues are going to be the case especially in regards FPS.

This is by no means saying that this is the cause of all problems but it does need taking into consideration in this type of thread in regards to PC issues.

That being said some of the things I have also experienced not only on latest patch are down to the game.

One that really annoys me is activating something and the option grays out yet it takes anything from 15 seconds to a minute to reply. The mages guild quest giver in desaan always takes ages for me to reply for example. Obviously I am not going to list everything I have come across here.

Also, the loading screens since this latest patch are getting really bad for me.

EU here. France. During the undaunted event it was very hard to play, I even crashed during a dps parse on a wired connection. It has vastly improved since then. I recently had some trouble logging in before a vMoL run, and I crashed twice, but all was running smooth the day before (On an other run). So, for me, the performances are mostly impacted by the amount of players, because it widly varies on when I log in. I just blame the events.

I'm on PC NA and its been extremely bad, disconnects randomly , disconnects when swapping toon's and then cannot log back in for like 10 or so minutes, got a dc yesterday while doing a survey and guess what i missed out on it due to the dc. Lots of lag and frames dropping a lot very frequently, weapon swap bugs , heavy attack bugs, light attack bugs, skills going greyed out and cannot cast them, bugs in black rose prison on vet, very annoying. Its been so bad its almost unplayable and rage inducing at times.

I suffer from pretty much the same issues as everybody else that posted here: sudden fps drops, slow loading of NPCs and textures, and the weapon swap bug/game stops/freezes. The worst are the disconnects that come out of the blue. Only yesterday in vMA, my heavy lightning staff attacks couldn't connect, I could press the button for 5 seconds and wait.

In my opinion, there is more and more stuff put into the game, like extra layers of outfits, that the game simply pouts and says: Gimme a break, will ya? And it's not the addons. And it's not even the latest patch that cause it. It was even worse during the PTS phase right before Wrathstone. I tested the game without addons, I tested various graphics settings, there wasn't a single trial run without a kick. Loading screens weren't fixed I guess, was the change even introduced in the patch?

    PC NA, playing from Europe.
    Kind regards,

    Hey all,

Do you happen to remember the exact day this started happening? Is it constant, or does it only happen in certain zones/while doing certain things?

    On PS4NA and PS4EU, Since update 20:

    Longer loading screens

Longer object load times (i.e. NPC's, static background items, etc... A good example is waiting for the NPC to render to interact even though the interaction option is already there. Or in Alinor when turning in crafting writs, the crates are there, but floating because the static items around them haven't rendered.)

Persistent issue with loading into certain zones. I had to completely re-install the game because the loading screen would freeze when traveling to Lilandril Wayshrine. On another toon it was Anvil Wayshrine.

Loading screens while in combat or traveling. - Multiple occasions where while in a BG or dungeon a loading screen would pop up for 5-10 seconds as though I had done a UI reset. In combat this usually meant I died. While traveling it almost led me off of a cliff.

Voice chat channels disappearing, or constantly connecting and disconnecting every 6 seconds.

Haven't had an opportunity since Update 21 to see how much of this is still true, but the second item is still a problem.

I'm on a fiber network with 900+ mbps upload/download speeds. On PS4 Pro that translates to about 500mbps down and 90mbps up.

Don't agree on Xbox NA or EU.

There is a horrible delay in mail trying to clear items but that feels intentional code rather than lag.

    But game performance feels fine.

The delay isn't just happening when deleting mails. Also affecting crafting stations and when removing items from containers in your character's inventory.

    The issues I experienced are:

    • Increased ping (never was that good but it's been getting worse lately).
    • FPS changes are even more noticeable. It randomly goes from 60 to 15.
    • NPCs taking ages to load in. Textures for buildings and players too.
    • Vendoring items is even slower now. Sometimes it randomly took me like 10 seconds to vendor something, but now it seems to happen to every single object I list. Something similar happened to the bank.

All this exactly. Since Monday's patch; consistently.

All updates seem to make cumulative changes in the Shader.cooked file which can affect performance over time. If performance drops too low, I'd recommend doing a complete uninstall and reinstall of the game, at least once every two years.

I don't think you have to be that drastic. I forget what it is, but there is a file that can be deleted that is suppose to speed up the game. Of course, first load will be a bit longer, since the file is gone, but since the new file is not so big game should run smoother.

I could be wrong of course, but I am just wondering if uninstalling and reinstalling would be just for this one file. If so, no need to be that drastic then.

I am curious, since I thought the update screwed up my Xbox when playing ESO, that wasn't the case at all. I some how changed a setting on my router so my son's PS4 would be the one that got primary treatment. I didn't realize that caused everything else to use the slow band.

So I turned it off and took the PS4 off as primary and got fast speeds again.

Not saying this will help anyone, but it would be good to see if your router is not causing you any issues. Before this, I Googled my router and typed in "linkysys slow internet speed" and found out why I had slow internet. Using some settings like "prioritize" or "parent" settings causes the router to make internet slow. So when I turned them off, I got my 200Mbs instead of 10Mbs. Wierd, but maybe this can help some people.

See what happens if you turn off prioritizing and parent features and see what happens. Not saying it will work, but it can help. Also don't do it if you don't know what you are doing since you can screw something else up and have no internet then.

While I do feel that posting about game issues on the forum is about as productive as talking to a wall, I'll throw my thoughts in anyway.

    1. PVE latency stays pretty consistent in facilitating between 90 and 130.
    2. Longer loading screens are very noticeable. This gets ridiculous when you are doing daily crafting writs on multiple characters. I have 6 toons that do writs that I typically leave parked at the house. Just to load 1 character and pick up writs you have to endure the character loading screen, the zone loading screen, the loading screen when you leave the house, and the loading screen when you wayshrine to the writ location. For me that's 24 loading screens just to pick up the writs, let alone those added on if you get mat surveys and run them.
    3. Game play has an increased abundance of choppy periods where framerate slows and skills do not execute. Happens in trials, dungeons, and overland. Everywhere really. Even when I'm at my house alone parsing against a combat dummy.
    4. PVP seems worse in big battles. Latency noticeably higher than normal (for me), around 150 -250. Frequency of slow frame rates is greater along with non-responsive skills.
    5. Whereas in the past I never had to deal with disconnections or game crashes, they are quite frequent now. At least a few times a day.
    6. I've also had some odd things occur like when retrieving gold from the bank it just disappears. It gets removed from the bank but doesn't get transferred to my character. Also noticed that when opening trial coffers that some of the items in the coffer don't get transferred to my toon when I accept the option to take them all.

It's not a coincidence that so many anomalies occur after each update. Actually, in game it's just becoming a joke everyone accepts as part of the ESO experience. Not an accolade I'd like to hang my hat on.

I am having the same Problems as many others here. Especially the long loading screens are excruciating. The loading screens for me have never been the shortest, but since Wrathstone and the new Patch on the 11th it is unbearable. Yesterday in Cyrodiil it took so long, that my group, that was going for a keep, had already conquered it before I even got out of the loading screen.
Latency in crowded places like big cities is also a big Issue. All of a sudden it spikes up to around 900 and the only thing I can do is reload the game.

I also play on both servers, but I've noticed more performance issues on EU compared to NA; although my ping is better on EU, my fps is much worse, and it really plummets during trials. On NA both ping and fps are more stable, even in group instances.

I was able to resolve all of the errors listed above by going into Documents>Elder Scrolls Online>live and deleting the Shader.cooked file there. I went from all the aforementiojned issues to 60 fps smooth play. Something in the Wrathstone drop jacked up that file and the client was choking on it. A hotfix that replaces or deletes that file and forces the client to generate a clean version of it should alleviate most of these issues.

Edit: It will still take time for PCs and NPCs to draw in depending on number and complexity, but overall performance was resolved with this method.
