Can we please have this storage item as a special furnishings? i mean storage are great~~ but it really pains me to remove any existing decoration to make space for this storage item... so far the only special furnishing i know of is that strange mist effect in crown store.. so.. much likely that most people have at least one slot free. can we please make this storage item as a special furnishing item so that it wouldn't affect currently house plan? many thanks

Housing storage likely means a significant update to housing, which likely means a slot upgrade of some sort.

I'd also like to know if the storage includes displays, like mannequins and weapon plaques. If all they're doing is adding special rare and expensive boxes that can hold items invisibly, while normal containers are still useless and nothing can be displayed... that'd be a distressing letdown given how long this feature has been requested.

you can acquire it in game(assuming master wirt) or crown store.
This update will allow you to acquire unique collectibles that you can use to store items in your homes, freeing up valuable inventory and bank space. You'll be able to acquire these new items in game or from the Crown Store.

I'd love mannequins for gear, and plaques for things like the Crab-Slaughter-Crane!

It'll be a significant improvement to gameplay but inventory storage isn't complicated programatically speaking. Probably a clone of the existing banking system with a few tweaks.

No, items stored will not count towards your furnishing limit.

Also, storage containers are listed as 'collectibles' so will only count towards such, and not as your normal furnishing limit.

For further info on storage, quote (below) from this thread sums it up best - https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/388210/eso-live-january-4th-summary#latest

    - Storage collectibles: 8 new collectibles. 4 big ones (chests, with 60 capacity each) and 4 small ones (coffers, with 30 capacity each) (So 360 new slots) Obtainable by master writs, tel var stones and for crowns. You can put all 8 in each of your houses and they are independant from your bank. BUT these chests have the same content in all your houses. You can also rename these collectables, so you always know what's inside of them. Other people can see them, but not interact with them.

Love it, and love the chest in the above picture, I just wish you could set permissions on the storage items so others can access them.

So, Oblivion pocket realms in the form of a pretty box, basically?

I was hopeful you would be able to buy multiple containers for multiple houses, thus paving the way for people to want more houses for more storage. The universal access is nice, I suppose (it's basically Bank/Bag 3-10), but I'd trade it for an unfinished crate that would hold more and be able to be placed in multiple locations.

It's not as if multiple containers are not a thing now (can't begin to tell you how many unopened coffers are in my possession.) so it's not a question of (server) storage capacity.
