Magicka DK tank

Hello,

I have a mag DK that is by far my favorite character to play. I'm considering a switch to a tank build for 4 man content and was curious if there was an effective magicka build to do so or if stam is the only way. I see people reference these builds (magicka) in other posts but I haven't come across any solid build guides etc.

As I'll be new to tanking (in ESO) I didn't want to complicate things by putting together a lousy build and stumbling all over myself in dungeons.

In part this is motivated by a desire to actually see the dungeons since 1.5 hour + que times in the dungeon finder as dps consume all of my available play time.

Thanks in advance for advice either way.

The newest patch makes magicka tanking really hard. I mean it makes sense that tanks primary stat is health. The idea is to use the sheild ability igneous shield over and over. It returns stamina to you by the dk passive and heals but it scales off health. Now due to changes to the way some healer abilities work having more stamina than magicka returns stamina to block more and having more magicka returns magicka instead.

Try this build. I use it all the time for soloing world bosses. Works good in dungeons too.

    I like the following setup:

5 vampire cloak ( staff, shield, chest, legs, boots, gauntlets)
5 magicka furnace ( jewelry, 1 hander, waist)
    2 chudan ( med helmet)

all prismatic with a mix of sturdy, reinforced and infused
    serpent mundus (stam regen)
    purple tri food
defending (stam absorb enchant) staff, infused(&crusher) 1 hander

    frost staff bar:

    1)Burning embers, 2)Elemental drain, 3)obsidian shard/fossilize, 4)molten armaments 5)utility: inhale/chains/breath/talons ultimate: ferocious leap

can also use eye of storm ultimate and replace drain with chains or talons

    1 hander and shield bar
    1) puncture, 2) heroic strike, 3) green dragon blood, 4) igneous shield, 5) utility: defensive posture/chains/breath/cinder cloud
    ultimate: shield discipline

depending on your race you end up with 36k hp, about 24k magicka and 18k stam. That's with all points in health though as a Breton. maxxed armor (33-34k), overkill on spell resist(35-36k) but good for a pvp setup. I also like the half points in health and quarter each in stam/mag (gives around 31k health, 26k mag, 20k stam)

magicka furnace (8k magicka) kicks on when you switch weapons below 80% magicka (every 30 seconds) and get hit by physical attack. Very nice if your tanking and effectively gives you 5-5-2 even with the staff as long as you change weapons when needed. Chudan and vampire cloak leave lots of space for abilities kind of an "always on" setup.

From your original post- it looks like you're just interested in knocking off dungeons (no vet trials)- so you don't have to worry about "meta builds" (Ebon, Tava, Bloodspawn= high ulti meta build) (Ebon, Green Pact/Plague Doctor= high damage shield meta build).

For a mDK tank dungeon/solo build- I usually run high damage (which equals high self heals) builds that have at least 25k health and 28-30k resistances. I hop back and forth between PVP and PVE, so you can tailor yours more toward what you prefer. If you plan to PVE more- just change out the "impen" traits with infused, divines, or sturdy... whichever you prefer.

This is my Dunmer mDK wearing 5 Kagrenac, 5 Silks of the Sun, 2 Valkyn. 5h/1m/1l build:

    xZPTRRQ.png

Tank Bar: Burning Embers, Pierce Armor, Volatile Armor, Inhale, Talons. Ulti: Ferocious Leap or DK Standard
DPS Bar: Dragonfire Scales, Force Pulse, Inner Light, Molten Armaments, Eruption (or Chains). Ulti: Shooting Star
Want to enjoy the game more? Try both PvP (crybabies) and PvE (carebears). You'll get a better perspective on everyone's opinion.
