Dueling Tournament Discussion - Help us make this great!

TiiZzArD xx
Hey Community,

Quick background info: I work for a Tournament company called WorldGaming and we are currently in discussion with Microsoft about doing a Free To Enter tournament where you will have a chance to win both in-game prizes and real money. I'm not talking pennies either, it could be above a few hundred bucks we're talking.

The point of this discussion is to figure out some questions.
Please be serious here.

What should be banned/if anything should be.
Where the best grounds would be and why?
If we should bring console into play or make it PC exclusive?
What time works best?
Best 2/3 - 3/5 - 5/7?
Are you allowed to swap character or gear?

If you think of any good feedback or questions let us know at support@worldgaming.com or post it below!

We look forward to seeing you guys out there!

If you start banning things you'll end up with naked fist fights.

Ban all damage proc sets (stam and magicka), black rose, fasalas, transmutation, malubeth, resource poisons, reactive, immovable pots, lingering health pots, trap beast, and eye of the storm
Could possibly make it crafted sets only
    Cap health at 24k
    PC only, best 2/3
    Balance

    Definitely open up to consoles.

And I think ban nothing. It makes it too complex, run what ya brung!

OR have tiers of comp. Open category, Zero Ultimate category etc etc. As long as the players are under the same rules (or lack of) its cool.

"What should be banned/if anything should be."
This is by no means an "official" list and I obviously have no power over any of you, just saying what I've seen usually be banned in duels and tournaments (I've been dueling since PC launch through Legend):
    • 2pc Malubeth. Banned because it can artificially lengthen fights, and a lucky proc can save somebody's life. Seen in a similar light to other "cancer proc sets" like Tremorscale and Viper in that it takes away a significant amount of skill away from the fight and encourages players to rely on procs.
    • 2pc Tremorscale and 5pc Viper. Running both at the same time is seen as bad as it encourages players to rely on procs and not worry about actually damaging players with their own skills. Some also refuse to fight people that run Velidreth and Viper.
    • Immovable potions. A huge part of dueling is setting up burst after a CC, and knowing how to prevent getting CCed before getting bursted. Immovable pots turn a critical element of dueling into "press Q" and is seen as unskillful.
    • Resource poisons. Poisons that increase magicka and/or stamina costs of your target by 60% are so above and beyond powerful that anybody not using them might as well be shooting themselves in the foot. Banned as they lack proper counterplay (the only class well equipped to deal with them is Templar), reduce build variety (again, only Templars can really deal with them) and are generally unfun to fight against.
    • 5pc Fasalla's Guille. Like resource poisons, this 5pc is so strong that everybody, magicka and stamina, should be running it. Banned because it reduces build variety.
    • 5pc Shieldbreaker. Very hard counter to magic sorcs as it allows it's wearer to completely bypass the sorc's defenses. Banned because it reduces class variety.

There should definitely be some things banned, otherwise it's virtually guaranteed that somebody running one of the two or three hilariously overpowered builds will win. At the same time, if you don't ban sets like Fasalla's or things like poisons, you're essentially forcing people to play as Templar, as they'll need the cheap purge Templars have to compete.

"Where the best grounds would be and why?"

There's an actual arena in the game you could host the tournament at: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/296604/fyi-theres-an-actual-arena-in-the-game-you-can-duel-at

"If we should bring console into play or make it PC exclusive?"

I'm guessing that, if you made it cross-platform, that you'd have different brackets for each platform? There's no way to have an Xbox player duel a PC player, for example, except for one them swapping to the other platform and then leveling a character there.

Also, ESO on consoles is 200% more popular, but PC players tend to be more hardcore in terms of playstyle and how extensively they're willing to theorycraft, practice, etc. If I was hosting the tournament, I'd likely just make it consoles only, and I say this as somebody who only plays PC.

    "What time works best?"

8-10 PM EST is the usual tournament time on PC NA.

    "Best 2/3 - 3/5 - 5/7?"

2/3 is best IMO, 3/5 and 5/7 take way too long. Keep in mind that, between two good players, each duel can last for 15+ minutes. I've had duels that lasted over twenty minutes.

"Are you allowed to swap character or gear?"

No real way to stop gear swapping, but I'd ban character swapping. Each class has an advantage, however slight, over another class/build, and allowing character swapping would encourage players to swap to the strongest class per duel, instead of learning how to fight a variety of opponents with one duel.

Excited to see how this all turns out. I've been a big fan of Overwatch's esports community and would love to see something similar develop for ESO.

Instead of making a list of sets people don't like -- because someone will find a nasty combo that not on the list -- why not just set a maximum of one damage proc set?

There should be a time limit on fights. Some class matchups can take insanely long of the players are of the same skill.
