Puzzles should be just that.

Personally I enjoy the puzzles and riddles, though I agree that some are a tad too easy... but as has been said, they need to keep it from becoming too frustrating for those players who are less likely to notice the solution is right there on the wall carvings... ;)

The skyshard in a certain tomb in Hews Bane was one of my favorites for example, in a "Now, how might one get there...?" kind of way. Not in the least because it was -optional-; I would love it if some dwelves had additional "optional" sections leading to some extra treasure that require some thinking to get through, be it by finding the right path,. or solving a harder puzzle to get through somewhere... yet have it not required for completion so that those not into puzzlings can just say "fugeddaboudit" and move on...

Some of the other puzzles were neat as well, even the ones where you can get there through trial and error also, and only have that warm fuzzy feeling when you do it right the first time by figuring out the hints correctly... same with the "riddles" in the game, most are way too easy, but still fun. Though I do often wish for some that take a bit more effort...

I don't mind of puzzle like in DS 2: BW. Solved it in 7 hours of continious calculations. On negative side it may cause "tetris syndrome". :D

Thanks for participating, Bossnumbnut. But the problem with your irrelevant comment is...

All puzzles do is make us spend a couple minutes on google, outside of the game. Pretty pointless making tricky puzzles. Much better keeping them fairly simple so we keep the fun pace going.

No but probably most, games like TSW are very niche and even there tons of people google the answers (spending time out of the game window basically not playing and generally not enjoying themselves).

But you can't turn off the compass on PS4, so that's unfortunately not an option. I play on PS4 now, but it's clear that PS4's target market is a little on the...slower side.

You should be able to hide the quest markets (and I think the compass too). I play on Xbox and I hide the quest markers. They don't appear on the compass, only the map. I wouldn't think that ps4 is any different.

Well, I guess you can't avoid that scenario, no matter what game it is or how apparently easy the puzzle may be. Maybe it's because when I was younger I couldn't understand why my friends would buy a game at the same time as whatever unofficial cheat guide they could lay their hands on, but I digress. I can only speak for myself.

One of the worst things I think are when they actually have puzzles in the game! I love questing, but because the game has so many of those low reward 'fetch quests', that having to turn around and spend time on a puzzle is extremely irritating. I don't mind the simple ones, as the OP stated- you grab the Mage, Tower, Atronach, out of skimming the text and complete the puzzle... the other ones that require having to write things down or else end up doing the 'trial and error' are the worst. At least most of them will grey out the wrong selections if you get it wrong, but no OP, most of us DO NOT want harder puzzles in the game. Furthermore, some of us work long hours and when we sit down to play, we don't have the mental capacity at the time for comprehending complex puzzles... I work 12-hour shifts and the last thing I want to do when I go into the game is have to focus on a puzzle.

There's a few puzzles in Wrothgar that require some actual thinking or figuring-it-out, that cannot easily be solved by just trying out all possible combinations (the dwemer puzzle in Graystone Quarry, the first puzzle in Bonerock Cavern, the puzzle in Fharun Stronghold, the Temple Library puzzle). I really enjoyed all of those :) Was a bit disappointed that the Thieves Guild didn't have any puzzle like that.
