The Great Champion Point Divide

As a casual gamer with not many champion points, is it possible to stay competitive in this game? I see people posting saying they have 170+ champion points. I just don't ever see being able to catch up or keep up with such people. Long term it just seems like it's going to get worse and worse for casual gamers or even new players. At the rate some folks play, some players will have thousands of champion points when I get 170+. I guess that's just the way MMOs are. I don't know. It's just a little daunting and discouraging.

Do you guys think the Champion system will kill the game for casual or new players? How do you see the future of the game when there are players that can grind champion points endlessly and others like myself that get a few here and there? Will the champion system hurt the game more than help it?

    Competitive at what?

Everything currently in the game can be done with 0 CP.

That being said, there is not a MMO out there that doesn't let the people that play more have an advantage over the people that play less. The advantage size varies from game to game, but it exists even if it is just in game gold or farming rares.

not sure but yeah its a huge worry. i know my friend who i played heaps with is atm not playing, waiting for new stuff. is gonna be REALLY far behind when he comes back and we play together. and he will never catch up.
i do my point a day and maybe another 1-3 points a week ontop of that and im on 185.

u are worried about 170. there are atm people with 440+ and even more people on 250-300

Atm, I have 173 CP and I'm playing a LOT. How anyone could have (much) more than I have is an enigma to me. But, imho this only "seems" to be a lot of bonuses; the 0,X% you get per CP are so insignificant that I'd say you don't miss much when you have less CP than f.e. I have right now. So I don't think the CS would kill the game :)

But like in other games, or other things in general, the ones who get there earlier or spend more time there will be ahead of the beginners, until/unless they stop playing or cannot get any higher in progression. But even then, there always will be other new players which don't have a VR14 with 3600 CP. Except for PvP maybe, I don't see a problem there :)

True. the bonuses go pretty flat at 5%.
Some of the 30 point bonuses are pretty powerful. I wouldn't see them as mandatory in a group though. haven't looked too hard at the higher bonuses. I'm just getting to the point where I can maybe have one 30 point per color.

How can anyone have more than +/- 200? I mean, yes, obviosly this is true, but how? Either their days must have 100 hours, or there's something wrong with the system. I should know since I play really a LOT (as I stated earlier already). More than 250 can't have been achieved yet, if not for a bug.

People do their enlightenment then do nothing but grind for 6+ hours a day. Maybe it if fun for them, maybe they don't know any better. Maybe they think they'll be the coolest kids if they have the most. Who knows. Sounds boring to me.

There are several other topics addressing this already, however, I do see this as becoming a problem in the near future (with the removal of vet ranks) as a "weeding mechanism" for forming groups. It makes me sick to my stomach that we will soon see "LFM Vet pledge, 90+ champ points or GTFO!"

I wish they would make some sort of a "catch-up" mechanism that only functions to, say, 80% number of champion points that anyone on the server has.

Side note: I know of at least 3 people who have over 600 points already. Let that sink in for a minute when you think about the differential

That's what I thought too.. and yes, it IS boring as hell to only grind, the game has a lot more to offer.
But I'm enlightened everyday as well, it lasts for 1 CP and then it's off. Grinding while not enlightened takes ages to even get one more, so I still don't understand how this is possible to have about 3x more than f.e. I have.
I do quests (completing all zones with all characters) and grind a bit between one quest and the next (or while I'm ON a quest), but the CP rate is still relatively low, compared to the time I'm on pretty much everyday.

The sad truth is, that it kinda doesn't :(

Once you have reached a certain point in character progression, you do you trial run for leader board, daily pledge(s), maybe PvP is you want a headache... annnnd.... run around the wayshrine in Mournhold until your game crashes?

This is why forums are the true end-game

Ok, true, when you've done everything, the "lot more to offer" is gone..
And, the game crashes when I only arrive at the wayshrine, I'm lucky if I have a chance to run around once before it crashes lol

places like cracked wood, with really good duo and having the place to yourself u can net 1 champion point in 20 minutes not enlightened. and the person i am talking about can hit 27k single target dps not burst either. so yes champ points ARE powerful! now add this insane damage with crazy grind places and they do it even faster and get even more exp/hour

Interesting stuff you are hopping there considering that:
-The "90+ champ points or GTFO " doesn't quite exist since there is no way of cheeking the number of of CPs of others.
-People that have many CPS usually do not play with PUGs.
-The fluff useless passives are stuff you get for free after you put your CP into useful stuff.

It is quite interesting that the people that are actually working on CP do not talk much about CP?
The ones that don't want others to have more than them are the most vocal about it and scream the most how much they do not care about CP.

Wow, ok, I didn't know.. I did Cracked Wood Cave 5 times of which twice was with the CS already, I didn't pay attention in that place, unfortunately. I only get in these dungeons, kill the bosses which are present at this time, get the skyshard and leave (before enemy players spot me^^)..
Hm.. I still have 3 characters left which haven't done the Cyrodiil quests/dungeons yet, so, thanks for the info ;)

Btw, does the XP really increase faster if grouped, or is that just a rumor? I'm a single player, so I cannot compare it.

I really hope the "LFM Vet pledge, 90+ champ points or GTFO" people will find players which do have 90+ CP BUT have them spent on 10% less repair cost, chance of double-wielding harvest nodes, inspiration bonus, faster harvesting, and the like  They'd deserve it ;)
Interesting stuff you are hoping there considering that:
-The "90+ champ points or GTFO " doesn't quite exist since there is no way of cheeking the number of of CPs of others.
-People that have many CPS usually do not play with PUGs.
-The fluff useless passives are stuff you get for free after you put your CP into useful stuff.

It is quite interesting that the people that are actually working on CP do not talk much about CP?
The ones that don't want others to have more than them are the most vocal about it and scream the most how much they do not care about CP.

When you see the trollface, you'll know I wasn't that serious.

When I see the troll Face it means that IT is even more serious business. I take my trolling very seriously . :p

It was not that I wanted to troll, but the ones with the automatical "fluff" bonuses might want to troll the ones who might search for people with "90+ CP". Nvm then.

Well the biggest troll related to CP comes from ZOS. One needs 360 CP minimum for a 2% run and ride speed boost. A whole 2% .Genius

    I definitely agree on that^^

I am a casual myself but I prefer that system. I prefer to slowly advance my account and everything I do does matter and stays than a system where a patch makes my previous 3-5 month worth nothing, or give other players in a week, what I have acquired in 3+ months.

As far as the game is not designed to require xCP in order to "beat it" then is a fine reward system that reward loyalty and does not throw your previous gameplay to the garbage.

The truth of the matter is, once (or if, at this point...) vet ranks are removed, there will have to be SOME mechanic to identify the power differences between players.

This could be in the form of adding an "inspect" option in the pop-up dialog, or whatever it may be. I can guarantee though, if they make gear gated behind champ points, there will be groups that advertise for high-point groups for "faster runs". It will be the same thing that we see in all other current MMOs with varied gear-strengths at max level.

A bit off topic: High champ point people do PUG. Not everyone is stuck up, plus, the content is not that hard for the most part. While you say people with high champ points want a monopoly on their position, I disagree. Vet leveling and the power creep caused by champion points has caused many players to quit, and I think that is a shame. The larger your pool of players (and the happier/more productive those players are) the better off your game will be imo.

not sure but yeah its a huge worry. i know my friend who i played heaps with is atm not playing, waiting for new stuff. is gonna be REALLY far behind when he comes back and we play together. and he will never catch up.
i do my point a day and maybe another 1-3 points a week ontop of that and im on 185.

u are worried about 170. there are atm people with 440+ and even more people on 250-300

How can anyone have more than +/- 200? I mean, yes, obviosly this is true, but how? Either their days must have 100 hours, or there's something wrong with the system. I should know since I play really a LOT (as I stated earlier already). More than 250 can't have been achieved yet, if not for a bug.

places like cracked wood, with really good duo and having the place to yourself u can net 1 champion point in 20 minutes not enlightened. and the person i am talking about can hit 27k single target dps not burst either. so yes champ points ARE powerful! now add this insane damage with crazy grind places and they do it even faster and get even more exp/hour

Yeah there is a grouped XP bonus. I think it is 10%.

Hard to see it much in use because content is easy to solo, and group content has very low XP... but the bonus is there. (I think it all stacks ...group+ mara + ESO plus = 30%)

With enlightenment and grinding, I've gotten 5 points a day myself (1.6m exp is possible). At that rate (and I'm not even a hardcore player) it only takes 2 months to get 300 points. If you're a subscriber and grind with a friend, using a Ring of Mara, you can subtract 12 days (20%) from the 60 it takes to get 300 points. So, 5*12 = 60 which means in 60 days you can have 360 champion points if you really work your butt off.
Grinding while not enlightened takes ages to even get one more,

Actually, with some basic grinds, I can get 2 per hour without much trouble.

I agree with the OP. The CP system is going to divide the players in not too long a time, and its already started somewhat. Im at 253 cp, and I know of players who are at 350-400 already, they are steadily getting more then me because they grind.

Im thinking, in about 6 months time, the grinders are gonna be so far away from certain other players that the divide is going to be quite apparent, specially in pvp.

    Im worried.

Bet its gonna be a blast to make pvp alts, load them full of powerfull epics and release the full fury of the hundreds of CP´s on the newbs lol

Picture a scenery it like this:

"general, we have an incoming foe, lone guy with a sword heading this way. What should we do?"
    - Nuke him.
    - what?
    - you heard me, we have a stealth bomber in the area carrying a nuclear missile. just nuke him

People already datamined information about potions. I think they are coming, its just odd Zen gives freely Crowns to us. If they make race potions, it does not help, but if they add catch-up potions, usable only to reach the top CP, then it works. Racing potions indeed make things alot worse, lets hope they dont do it, I personally start to use them all day long, and noobs can say goodbye to their asses.

Also, maybe its time to start doing double CP weekends or something like that, everyone do those these days, basically you get CPs twice as fast.

well you can easily get 1 CP per day with enlightenment in an hour... so 1 hour per day isn't a lot of play time... another cp can be gained in about 3 hours depending on what you do... so its not that hard to get on average 2 a day.. if you play quite often... so the system has been out for soon 3 months so its pretty easy to be at 200 for those who started at 70....

and as mention by others... every mmo offer an advantage to those who play more... that's half the incentive to play.. is to be stronger...

MY POST: If they do what I suggested, at least loyal/veteran players gets somekind of satisfaction if they know new/casual players spend real money to catch them up. This'd be so much better if we had high population and we could say simply "Grind or GTFO" but we cant, ESO really need to thikn the population too or this game slowly dies.
