So I'm a brand new vr 14 new to PVP and I'm curious what the general rule is as far as set's and traits go. Right now I only haves access to crafted sets since I have not completed many dungeons either.

I actually have two VR 14 toons

Stam NB
Maj Sorc

any info appreciated in advance.

Crafted sets are perfectly fine for PvP. However, before anyone can suggest gear options, you need to state what your build is and play style.

Mag sorc you want to look at high spell damage. Look at sets like martial knowledge, adroitness, torugs pact, cyrodiils light...

It depends on your playstyle. I can't give you advice on the NB but on the Sorc you'll at least want the Seducer set if you want some form of sustainability.

Traits if you're a LA wear should be Infused on the large pieces(Head. Chest. Legs), divines on the rest.

If you're newer to PvP you'll definitely want sustainability and survivability over damage or you wont last long enough to learn to improve.

stam NB usually gear with 2h/bow. High stam recovery + some wep dmg.

my advice for a pvp magica sorc equip setup:
5x Warlock (including 3 jewlery slots - quite expensive) [2x main slots - infused]
4x martial knowledge (VR13 items are cheap and sufficient) - [small slots = devines]
2x torugs [main slot = infused]

    Thanks everyone for the tips.

For my stam NB I wanted to go in as a stealthy ganker with bow/dw though dw seems lacking so I may have to train up 2H. My armor for the NB would be medium. I'm assuming traits are similar? 3 infused on large pieces and divines on the rest?

Seeing the replies though I'm assuming using impen traits are a thing of the past?

Impen is an option but for a Sorc it isn't particularly useful since most damage is done to your shields and for a NB wearing medium or heavy armor you'll want reinforced if you want to play defensively.

Has reinforced been shown to be better than impenetrable?

Yes, Gina actually said that (at least regarding Rushed Ceremony) right here:

Typically this game isn't set up like WoW where you can find a guide on "the best" gear, set up, traits, etc. Everything is somewhat situational and dependent on your play style. Ez plays a style relying on survivability and sustainability so what he uses might not suit what you are looking to do.

I was playing around last night with a new gear setup for my Magicka Sorc.

    5 heavy
    1medium
    1 light

    5 seducer
    2/3 torugs pact
    2 Adroitness
    2 cyrodiils light

I still had around 2.2k spell damage with surge up, 28k health, and about 28k magicka too. BUT I had a craptonne of armor & spell resist compared to the old light armor setup.

At first I didn't think this would make a difference as being a Sorc I always have a finger over the shield button... but it really did! Anytime I got jumped by multiple people which would usually have broken my ward, and killed me in 1 second I was still alive and able to blink/shield & fight back. The same with siege damage... I was watching people everywhere just dropping like flies, but I didn't have a problem at all.

Didn't find sustain an issue either.

So there we go... heavy armor... Sorc's don't just have to be in pajamas all the time!

As I'm sure you know, the things you lose are Spell Penetration, Spell Crit and Magicka Recovery. You're giving up substantial amounts of each, and your burst damage will plummet. Do you feel like you can still take down moderately tanky foes or healers?

I still think this works better for stamina builds, as Block is the best mitigation in the game. It also works better on classes with a workable self-heal, as healing and high mitigation synergize so well for extending time-to-live. Still, this might be a lot of fun. Have you considered doubling down on the idea and keeping Lightning Form up all the time?

Yeah I was worried about those....

But had a nirnhoned weapon to help with the spell penetration, yellow cost reduction glyphs on jewels & seducer set to help with cost reduction/magicka recovery so wasn't suffering any magicka regen issues.

I was in there around 4 hours & it still felt pretty bursty.... I'll be honest I wasn't paying a lot of attention to the exact figures of how hard stuff was hitting... but I didn't have any problem bursting people down. 2.2k spell power isn't as high as my PvE gear obviously, but it still felt pretty strong.

I haven't tried the lightning form idea in PvP yet no.... used it once or twice in PvE though and found it handy.

Like I say, I was playing around with it for sh*ts & giggles... I've never been a heavy armor wearer really... but this setup really did feel good in there on a Sorc. I was able to build around the obvious weaknesses that you mention to make those not as noticeable but the survivability was significantly increased.

In fact I found it worked particularly well with a magicka build... because I could build around the magicka regen issues, but the extra reduced block cost felt really good as I was running pretty low stamina what with being a magicka build. I used S&B on my back bar to help with this a bit more too.

Quite looking forward to some more extended testing this weekend :)

I also tried bow/dw because i love to be a archer. But in melee....well i fail hard with DW (in a pvp raid DW is very good because it good aoe dmg) Seems i need to focus on bow/2h when im solo. (NB V14)

If you're new to pvp I would suggest a build with decent magicka regen and spell damage, full glass canon is pretty hard to play if you're new to pvp.

Magicka sorc: destro/resto staff, 1HA/1MA/5LA, Atronach mundus stone

-4x Healer (3x jewelry and 1x light armor) vr13 is cheap, vr14 is quite expansive
-2x Engine Guardian or 2x Torugs Pact
    -5x Magnus or 5x Seducer

All enchants en attribute points into magicka, magicka cost reduction enchants on jewelry with tri-stat buff food and tri-stat potions.

Warrior CP: Bastion to increase shields
Thief CP: magicka cost reduction and magicka regen,
Mage CP: first 30pts into Apprentice then magic damage damage and staff expert.
