If ESO sold well we would have heard about it. Silence means that it did not.

My guess is that they're waiting for the console launch to release combined PC and console sales (not current subscribers) numbers.

ESO needs drunken children in the Nord areas, um. ;)

@Maverick827 - Well, not everyone feels the need to brag it up when they do well (if I won the lottery, do you think I'd tell anyone?! I sure as hell wouldn't make myself look much richer than I am now, with the exception of maybe breaking down and buying a reliable/utilitarian vehicle.)

But you might have a point; let them wait until console sales hit, and then give out a big number. They don't have shareholders to impress, but it might impress someone, I suppose.

But that's Japan. The Japanese have fun minds, judging from their entertainment.

Have you seen the stuff we put out? Bo-ring. Which is probably why our politicians are all nuts, they only grew up with one station on TV - the CBC. I'd go nuts too, if the only thing to watch was The Beachcombers.

(I grew up across the river from Detroit; we didn't need no stinkin' Beachcombers.)

Actually Zenimax sold 5.7 million copies directly which none of those charts have any way to monitor since it is a privately owned company and doesn't release financial information.

Making outlandish statements in order to get page-views is all that's required to be a blogger. The main site doesn't even edit the writing, much less review the content, that these idiots post; they just want to see numbers.

There is a zero percent chance Zenimax withheld great sales numbers so they wouldn't be perceived as "bragging."

WAIT--I found a more accurate accounting of the numbers.

This page says ESO sales actually were over 10 times what's listed in this thead, coming in at 4.2 million. Plus over one million, three hundred thousand active subs at launch. Here's a link to the site where that info is, so it must be legitimate. I mean, it's a link--on the internet!!!

    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/107731/39-million/p2.

Scroll two thirds or so to the bottom of the page to see it. The numbers are even in BOLD!!!!!!

There is a much greater chance they'd wait until console release to unveil numbers because then they'd be able to use bigger numbers.

The console delay was unplanned, and 2-3 months post-launch is a silly time to release sales numbers. So now they're kind of trapped in the waiting game for the console release so that they can finally tell the press some really impressive figures.

I totally disagree. There is 0 incentive for them to release numbers. If they stated 5 million sold people would say FAIL!!! WoW has 7.5. If they say 1 Million people will say FAIL we expected 3 Million. No matter what number they put out people will use it to fuel arguments that the game is failling and it will only lead people who are happily playing to leave. No one new is going to come because they say they sold a high number but people will leave if they think the number is to low.

Skyrim is a totally different business model there are no subs so publishing those numbers just made the company look better. Currently publishing numbers can do nothing but harm ZOS.

I don't think even his mother could defend that guy, especially after the half arsed clumsy apologies blog (yeah the one you avoided quoting?) where he practically retracted what he said but childishly trying to stick to what he said. the result was amusing

VGCharts are educated guesses at the best of days and not that accurate. Sales figures for games are only disclosed accurately when the company decides to release the numbers. As Zenimax hasn't and there aren't any financial reports to draw source from, I won't base myself on one source alone.

I do remember that VGChartz predicted that Nintendo Wii would bunk out on the sales and be crushed to pieces by the PS3 sales when Sony launched. That was their educated guess. Today we all know that the guess on that part was way off.

There was direct confirmation from Reddit that the data in question excluded direct digital downloads - quite apart from how accurate they even are for the physical copies.

And it's utterly specious to claim that they would have released numbers unless they were bad. What incentive do they have to release anything? Let's say that there were 2 million - the people hostile to the game would then start speculating about low retention, or they'd claim that the numbers were fake, or that they were inflated. If the number is less than 5 million it's fewer than beta (thus, a failure); if it's less than WoW it's a failure; etc.

Come up with a good reason for them to release average, or even above average (but not record-breaking), sales.

Even if the sales are bad, Skyrim sold way more copys on xbox and ps3 compared to pc. At 14% of total copies sold the PC platform only represents a fraction of their playerbase.

Here, check out this completely unconfirmed link I found in a 20 second google search.

I'm in one trade guild where the guild leader kicks out anyone not active in the last 7 days and replaces them with new active people. However I'm in a couple of other guilds where the leaders do not do this and by scrolling down you can see that only 1/4 of the people in these full guilds have logged on within the last seven days. I believe these guilds portray the more accurate picture.

Also an interesting note is that the majority of these inactive players are between level 45 and VR5

I don't give two *** what the fine people at forbes, let alone the idiots that satellite them have to say. If I wasn't able to play the game myself and only had access to the infinitely reflecting pools of pessimism and bitterness commonly referred to as the eso forums, I would also think this was a sinking ship.

The only times I can ever not find people to play with is in the middle of the night. I wouldn't think this game was struggling if not for the forums.

I will be staying here. Not forever, even if they do everything right. Eventually the world will be explored, the villains slain and treasure plundered. I'll get bored and it will feel more like work than play.

Assuming everyone doesn't *** them out of subs into the ftp charity case like every other spineless company out there. Or if they nerf my class. God forbid I get nerfed.
