Don't know if its this way with the younger generation, but the Brit non-commissioned officers used to be renown for their ability dress down a soldier for ten minutes straight, without using the same profane word twice.

Americans have always stunk at cursing, over-using the F word and its variants over and over again.

Anyone can read the forums (only owners of the game can write post on it), thus the forums are rated "Teen" for that reason.

Most people want the zone chat to be used -- answering questions, looking groups, hanging out. All that we want for people to show respect. Name calling and certain topics should be in Guild or Party or Tells -- not open in the public.

I have left a Guild because of topics and words are used there, I can not "leave" zone chat "guild" therefore, people who used should show respect by not cussing or talking about certain topics -- they have other channels for those who want to engage in that type of action.

One is only allow 100 on the ignore list -- between the bots and people who act less then 10 years old, it will fill up too fast. I should not have to used that any ways if people can have some basic common sense.

A cuss word once a while does not bug me, just when it is over used or certain topics are talked about does. More cases then not, it just leads into name calling and being made fun of. Why should I put myself in that place to ask a game question or try to sale an item or find a group? The zone chat is just as much mine that it is yours.

    No voi vittu!

That's what I thought and i still feel that way. But apparently my one time use of the word herpes got someone all butthurt and I got the warning letter-o-doom. I had no idea why I got that warning letter and when I asked what it was that I had done it took them 3 days for me to find out the specific reason. I generally don't curse in open channels so I had no clue.

Between that and me being a V12 NB... I honestly do not care anymore. If they want to police me for that they really have some bigger issues. So whatever.

There are times/places where profanity is acceptable, and there are times/places where it isn't. Maturity is (among other things) the ability to know when it is/isn't acceptable. Public chat channels are a place where it isn't acceptable. Thinking it is acceptable to use profanity in public channels shows *lack* of maturity, not maturity.

Would you walk down a crowded street and say f-you to everyone you see? I don't think so. Public chat channels are the same thing.

On the other hand, if you want to talk like a drunken sailor in a group with your friends, or in your guild...that is perfectly acceptable. In fact, I do that myself.

We are talking here about a game where a female ships captain ask you to save her wife, an old bosmer man asks you to get flowers for his husband and so on, and worry about someone being offended by a word dropped in chat?

I admit I filtered out Zone Chat, because I just don't want to hear someone spamming their website to get the gold you need, the tempers you want, the Motifs you are missing... I will have to check if a right click option is "Report Player", if it is, I may have to turn the zone chat back on...

I don't much care to hear the "Join our guild, BadAzzez of Tamriel, we do PVP and PVP and PVP" granted, I am not offended by it, I just don't care to hear it...

Like another poster, I spent 20 years in the military, like him I try not to use profanity, but I have heard it all many times and seeing how many F-Bombs you can drop in a sentence is not all that impressive... letting one drop now and then just happens, get over it

That being said, this game has rules, we should abide by them as best we can.
Of all the things I have lost, I miss my mind the most...

NO. I'll say whatever the hell I want. There's a filter. And you can ignore me.

I agree. And I do ignore people, and I use the report as well when I feel like it. But I never tell people to watch their language, unless its a guildie.

    For the 20th time...

Game rating has nothing to do with what players say.

In fact, the ESRB states that player interaction IS NOT COVERED BY THEIR RATING SYSTEM.

So that NPC can call you a damn bast**** and you cant call someone else one using the rating as an excuse.

The bottom line is this: It doesn't matter what I think. It doesn't matter what you think. It doesn't matter that the game has a profanity filter. It doesn't matter that the game is rated mature. According to the terms of use that we all agreed to ZOS can ban or suspend anyone at any time and for any reason or no reason. Anyone can report a person but ZOS makes the final call. They could ban me for saying poo-poo head if they wanted to and there would be nothing I could do about it.

Ahhh so then by that logic I should be free to use the N word when referring to African Americans, or for that matter any of many racial slurs directed at many different races. Words mean things, when and how you use words tells a lot about what kind of person using those words.

If this were a game for children, I'd speak up about profanity in chat. However, this game is rated M, and I'm going to assume everyone playing is an adult. Under that assumption, who am I to tell another adult not to swear in an environment that is meant for a mature audience?

I do not login to play mother and scold other players for swearing.

I despise people who get *** about words. We've all heard them a million times, so who cares? Some word considered as profanity have become a great way to express ourselves when we want to exaggerate. Anyone who can't deal with words or ideas needs to come down off their high horse and *** off.

To start it off, my apologies to all the people whom I have possibly offended in the zone chat by dropping a f-bomb. Even got in a fun little profanity filled skype chat. I know this chain of events isn't worthy of a topic, but the real matter on hands is.

How does this profanity in this game work? Since it's an M (for mature) labeled game, are we allowed to say 'damn' every once in a while? I'm curious.
The public street is labeled "M" because mature themes might happen there. Are you allowed to swear like a sailor there?

If you really want to swear, do it verbally without microphone on.
If you use /zone, guild or group channel you want others to hear you. You choose to risk offending others with it when you invest time to write it down. In the grown up world you suffer the consequences for your choices.

Well that is what I was told by my liberal arts teacher in college. Who would have guessed he was wrong. By the way, after researching myself, no one is actually sure where the word came from. So his version of the urban legend could be as correct as anyone else's. That is beside the point anyway.

I would ague that certain terms are not swear-words as such but become offensive due to their history of prejudice. The n-word is not a swear word as such.

Good old fashioned swear-words are universal.
